Moenkhausia newtoni was described by Travassos in 1964. The species is treated as valid by Eschmeyer's Catalog of Fishes (California Academy of Sciences), the primary authority for valid names in the Characidae and related families. Because the species was described directly in Moenkhausia and has not been moved to another genus, the authority is written without parentheses.
Moenkhausia is an unusually large neotropical tetra genus containing well over a hundred described species distributed across South America east of the Andes. The group is notoriously difficult to diagnose by synapomorphy and has been characterised principally by a combination of characters including the presence of scales on the caudal fin, a complete lateral line, and certain meristic counts — characters that collectively define a grade rather than a fully resolved clade.
