Taxonomy & naming
Moenkhausia nigromarginata was described by the Brazilian ichthyologist Wilson J. E. M. Costa in 1994, in a paper that also introduced a second new species of the genus from central Brazil. The original description was published in the Zoologischer Anzeiger (volume 232, issue 1–2), and the holotype (MNRJ 12429) was deposited at the Museu Nacional, Rio de Janeiro. The Catalog of Fishes (Eschmeyer, Fricke & van der Laan) records the valid name as Moenkhausia nigromarginata Costa, 1994.
The genus Moenkhausia Eigenmann, 1903 is one of the largest and most species-rich genera in the family Characidae, containing well over a hundred recognised species distributed across South American river basins. Its limits have long been debated, and molecular phylogenetic work suggests the genus as classically defined is likely polyphyletic; various reassignments of species have been proposed in recent years, though the name Moenkhausia nigromarginata remains in current use. The species epithet nigromarginata combines the Latin niger (black) with marginata (bordered or edged), referring to the dark margins on the fins.
Morphology
Moenkhausia nigromarginata is a slender, moderately compressed characid reaching approximately 2 in standard length. The body is typical of the genus: silvery-flanked with a relatively streamlined profile. The back has a blue to bluish-green iridescent sheen under incident light, a feature that distinguishes it at a glance from plain-silver congeners. The ventral flanks carry a zigzag or irregular dark patterning that is characteristic of the species.
The eye is notably bright, often appearing blue — a feature remarked upon in hobby observations. The fins show the dark edging implied by the species name. As is common in Moenkhausia, the caudal fin base bears a dark spot or blotch. Precise meristic data (scale counts, fin-ray counts) are not widely published outside the original description, but the overall gestalt is of a tidy, modestly ornamented small tetra rather than a flamboyant one.
Habitat
The type locality for Moenkhausia nigromarginata is a small stream tributary to the Rio Tapajós, located near the road MT-170 approximately 6 mi north of Campo Novo do Parecis in the state of Mato Grosso, Brazil. The species is known from the upper Tapajós River basin, one of the major right-bank tributaries of the Amazon draining the Brazilian Central Plateau.
The upper Tapajós drainage encompasses clear-water and blackwater streams running across the Cerrado and transitional forest zones of Mato Grosso. Small tributary streams in this region tend to be shallow, with sandy or gravelly substrates, submerged wood, and root tangles providing structural refuges. The species' defensive habit of darting downward and wedging under stones and roots when threatened is consistent with life in structurally complex, shallow stream environments where benthic cover offers ready escape from predators. No specific water-chemistry data for the type locality have been reported in accessible sources; the upper Tapajós system generally yields soft, slightly acidic to near-neutral water, as is typical of Brazilian shield streams.
Feeding
Detailed dietary studies of Moenkhausia nigromarginata in the wild are not available in the accessible literature. Like most small characids of similar build, the species is presumed to be an opportunistic omnivore, taking small aquatic invertebrates, insect larvae, microcrustaceans, and organic matter from the water column and substrate.
In the aquarium it accepts standard small-tetra foods without difficulty: quality flake and micro-pellets, frozen foods such as Daphnia, brine shrimp, and bloodworm, and similar fare. A varied diet that includes some live or frozen invertebrate food is likely to support colour and general condition. No unusual dietary requirements have been reported.
Mating
Spawning behaviour has not been described in detail for Moenkhausia nigromarginata in published sources. As a member of Moenkhausia and the broader characid radiation, the species is expected to be an egg-scattering open spawner. Males in breeding condition likely display to females with intensified colouration and lateral posturing.
Fine-leaved aquatic plants or root tangles probably serve as the natural spawning substrate, with adhesive or semi-adhesive eggs deposited among vegetation and left unguarded. The species offers no parental care — a universal trait in Moenkhausia — and adults will consume eggs given the opportunity. Specific courtship observations in the aquarium hobby are sparse, reflecting the species' relative rarity in captivity.
Breeding
No detailed breeding reports for Moenkhausia nigromarginata have been published in accessible sources. Based on the general reproductive biology of the genus and family, spawning is expected to proceed as a scatter of adhesive eggs over fine-leaved plants or synthetic spawning mops, with the adults removed promptly to prevent egg predation.
Incubation periods and fry-rearing requirements are not documented for this species specifically, but parallels with similar small Moenkhausia suggest eggs hatch within two to three days at tropical temperatures, and that newly free-swimming fry require very small first foods such as infusoria or commercial liquid fry food before graduating to newly hatched brine shrimp. Its rarity in the trade means breeding accounts in the hobby literature are essentially absent; successful spawning reports, if they exist, have not entered the widely accessible record.
In the aquarium
Moenkhausia nigromarginata is an uncommon species in the aquarium hobby and is occasionally offered by specialist importers and wholesalers rather than the general trade. First imports were noted after the original 1994 description, and the species remains a find for collectors of unusual small tetras. Aquarium Glaser GmbH has documented it among unusual imported characids.
In captivity it adapts well once acclimated. The most-noted behavioural quirk — darting downward and wedging under stones or roots when alarmed — is striking in new arrivals but subsides once the fish settle and feel secure; a tank with ample structure (smooth stones, driftwood tangles, or dense planting) accelerates this acclimatisation. As a small schooling fish it should be kept in a group, ideally six or more, in a well-filtered, modestly lit aquarium. Soft to moderately hard, slightly acidic to neutral water appropriate to its Mato Grosso origins is likely optimal, though precise tolerances have not been published. Peaceful tankmates of comparable size — other small tetras, small rasboras, or bottom-dwelling cories — are appropriate. It is not a demanding species by characid standards, but its comparative rarity means husbandry knowledge is largely anecdotal.
Conservation
Moenkhausia nigromarginata is assessed as Least Concern (LC) on the IUCN Red List, with the assessment dated 7 November 2018. The Least Concern listing reflects that, despite its restricted type locality in the upper Tapajós basin of Mato Grosso, the species is not considered to face a level of threat sufficient to qualify for a threatened category under current data.
The upper Tapajós basin is subject to the broad pressures affecting much of the Brazilian Cerrado and its transition zones: agricultural expansion, deforestation for soybean cultivation and cattle ranching, and hydropower development. These threats act on many fish species in the region. For Moenkhausia nigromarginata specifically, population size, precise range extent, and population trend data are limited. Aquarists sourcing this species from reputable importers who work with sustainably collected stock contribute, in a minor but real way, to incentivising responsible collection practices from a basin where wild habitats face increasing pressure.
