Moenkhausia pankilopteryx is a medium-sized characid from the Tocantins River drainage of Pará, Brazil, described by Bertaco and Lucinda in 2006 on the basis of material collected in the Serra dos Carajás. Males are immediately set apart within the genus by a striking autapomorphy: bony hooks are present on all fins, a feature reported from pectoral, pelvic, dorsal, anal, and caudal rays. The species grows to just under 4 in standard length and is assessed as Least Concern by the IUCN, reflecting its reasonable distribution within a large river basin.

Taxonomy & naming

Moenkhausia pankilopteryx was described by Luiz Roberto Malabarba Bertaco and Paulo Andreas Buckup Lucinda in 2006, published in Zootaxa (volume 1120, page 59). The type locality is the Rio Itacaiunas, a tributary of the Rio Tocantins drainage, collected approximately 6 mi east of road N-4 in the Serra dos Carajás region (5°32'S, 50°32'W), Pará state, Brazil. The holotype is lodged at the Museu de Zoologia da Universidade de São Paulo (MZUSP 88258). Eschmeyer's Catalog of Fishes (CAS) records the valid name as Moenkhausia pankilopteryx Bertaco & Lucinda, 2006.

The genus Moenkhausia is among the most species-rich in the family Characidae, encompassing over one hundred species distributed across tropical South America. The specific epithet pankilopteryx references the distinctive fin hook character that defines the species among its congeners — 'panki' in the original description alluding to the all-fin distribution of bony hooks, and 'pteryx' from the Greek for fin or wing. Males bearing ossified hooks on every fin pair are unusual even among hook-bearing characids, where hooks typically occur on the anal or pelvic rays alone.

The species is endemic to the Tocantins River basin and has not been reported from adjacent drainages. Its closest relatives within Moenkhausia share the Tocantins–Araguaia system.

Morphology

Males reach approximately 4 in standard length (SL), making Moenkhausia pankilopteryx a moderately sized member of its genus. Body form follows the generalized moenkhausia plan: moderately deep and laterally compressed, with a blunt snout, large eye, and a complete lateral line. The caudal fin is forked, as is typical of active open-water characids.

The diagnostic feature of the species is the presence of bony hooks on all fins of males — pectoral, pelvic, dorsal, anal, and caudal. In many hook-bearing characids, hooks are restricted to the anal or pelvic fins; their presence across every fin set in this species constitutes an autapomorphy identified by the original authors. These hooks are smaller paired projections on the fin rays, likely related to male–male combat or spawning contact. Their function in wild populations has not been experimentally studied but parallels are drawn with other hook-bearing characids in which hooks are associated with courtship or agonistic interactions.

Background coloration details and precise scale and fin-ray counts were established in the original description from holotype and paratypes. Data on females is limited in the available literature; sexual dimorphism beyond the fin-hook character is not well documented in the cache.

Habitat

The species is known from the Rio Itacaiunas and surrounding tributaries within the broader Rio Tocantins drainage in Pará, Brazil. The Serra dos Carajás type locality is an upland mining region in the eastern Amazon basin, characterised by clear to slightly turbid igarapés (small forest streams) and mid-order river channels draining off laterite plateaus.

FishBase classifies the species as freshwater, benthopelagic, and tropical. Water temperatures in the Tocantins headwater tributaries of Pará are warm year-round, consistent with the equatorial Brazilian interior. No precise water-chemistry parameters (pH, conductivity, hardness) were captured in the available sources for this specific drainage, but Tocantins tributaries in the Serra dos Carajás region are generally soft and mildly acidic, draining through laterite and forest soils rather than carbonate rock.

The Tocantins is a large and hydrologically complex basin; whether M. pankilopteryx occupies only the Itacaiunas tributary system or ranges more broadly through the middle Tocantins is not fully resolved in the accessible literature.

Feeding

FishBase records a trophic level of 3.5 for Moenkhausia pankilopteryx, placing it in the omnivore-to-generalist carnivore range. A trophic level of 3.5 is consistent with a diet of small aquatic invertebrates, insect larvae, and supplementary plant or algal material — the generalist foraging strategy typical of mid-sized Moenkhausia.

No stomach-content analysis specific to this species was retrieved from the available sources. By analogy with closely related moenkhausia species in the same basin, wild diet likely includes aquatic insect larvae, microcrustaceans, surface-fallen terrestrial insects, and incidental plant matter. In the aquarium the species can be expected to accept standard omnivore fare: quality flake, small pellets, and frozen or live foods such as Daphnia, brine shrimp, and bloodworm.

Mating

No direct field or laboratory observations of spawning behaviour have been published for Moenkhausia pankilopteryx. The species is a characid in the genus Moenkhausia, and the reproductive guild of the group is open egg-scattering with no parental care — the default mode for characids in this broad guild.

The elaborate bony hooks carried on all fins of males are likely relevant to mating. In hook-bearing characids generally, male fin hooks are thought to function in contact during spawning — allowing the male to maintain alignment with the female during the spawning rush — and may also play a role in male–male competition. Whether the all-fin hook distribution of M. pankilopteryx confers any distinct mating advantage relative to single-fin hook species has not been studied.

In the absence of species-specific behavioural data, generalised Moenkhausia-typical courtship can be assumed: males pursue and display to females, with spawning occurring in bursts over fine substrates or among vegetation, without pair bond formation.

Breeding

Moenkhausia pankilopteryx has not been reported in the ornamental-fish trade literature and there are no published captive-breeding accounts in the sources available. Based on family and genus biology, it is an egg-scattering open spawner that deposits adhesive or semi-adhesive eggs among fine-leaved plants or over substrate, with no parental care; adults will consume their own eggs if not separated.

Egg development and fry rearing would follow the general Moenkhausia model: eggs hatch in 24–48 hours at warm temperatures, producing small larvae that feed initially on infusoria and microorganisms before accepting newly hatched brine shrimp and finely powdered foods. The high resilience rating and population doubling time of less than 15 months recorded by FishBase suggest good reproductive output consistent with a productive open-water spawner.

Any aquarist acquiring this species — which would most likely arrive as wild-caught material from specialist dealers rather than as tank-bred stock — would need to treat it as an undocumented breeding project and adapt standard moenkhausia protocols.

In the aquarium

Moenkhausia pankilopteryx is not an established aquarium fish and is rarely if ever available in the hobby. It is an intermediate-sized Moenkhausia at just under 4 in SL and would require an aquarium suited to active mid-sized characids: a tank of at least 39.5–47 in in length with open swimming space, gentle to moderate current, soft and slightly acidic to neutral water replicating Tocantins tributaries, and a planted or naturalistic layout.

The species' most notable husbandry point is the all-fin bony hooks of males. These hooks can snag fine-mesh nets and delicate plant leaves and may cause minor abrasions on soft-finned tankmates during spawning rushes. Soft-net handling is advisable. Otherwise, a peaceful community with similarly sized characids, small cichlids, or callichthyid catfish at the bottom would be appropriate.

Given the absence of captive-breeding records and the species' likely wild-caught-only status, little further husbandry data is available. Conservation-minded aquarists keeping this species should document any breeding observations and share them with the wider community.

Conservation

Moenkhausia pankilopteryx is assessed as Least Concern (LC) on the IUCN Red List, with an assessment dated 2018. The Least Concern rating reflects the species' occurrence within the large Rio Tocantins basin — one of South America's major river systems — and no identified severe population declines or restricted-range threats at the time of assessment.

The Serra dos Carajás region, where the type locality is situated, hosts one of Brazil's largest iron-ore mining complexes (Carajás Mineral Province, operated by Vale S.A.). Mining activity in the region has historically been associated with local hydrological changes and stream sedimentation, though the broader Tocantins drainage as a whole is large enough to buffer against localised impacts. The Tucuruí Dam on the main Tocantins stem, completed in 1984, created one of the world's largest artificial lakes and significantly altered the river's lower reaches; impacts on upstream Serra dos Carajás tributaries are indirect but include changes to migratory fish composition and hydrology.

FishBase records high resilience for the species and a minimum population doubling time of less than 15 months, suggesting the population can recover relatively quickly from moderate disturbance. The IUCN Least Concern status stands as the current best assessment; no targeted conservation programmes are known for this species.
