Moenkhausia parecis is a slender characid from the headwaters of the rio Machado on the Chapada dos Parecis plateau of Rondônia, Brazil — a narrow-range species whose natural home is a system of cool, swift highland creeks draining through sand and leaf litter at roughly 585 metres elevation. Described in 2016, it remains poorly known in the hobby and is absent from most commercial trade, yet its restricted range and the rapid agricultural conversion of the Chapada dos Parecis raise genuine conservation concern for a fish that may occupy no more than a few square kilometres of suitable habitat.

Taxonomy & naming

Moenkhausia parecis was described by Ohara and Marinho in 2016, the type locality being a terra-firme igarapé (highland creek) in the upper rio Machado drainage on the Chapada dos Parecis plateau, Rondônia, Brazil. The creek is a narrow highland stream 5–8 ft wide and 1–3 ft deep at around 1919 ft elevation, within the broader Rio Madeira basin of the Amazon system. Eschmeyer's Catalog of Fishes is the authority for the valid name.

The specific epithet parecis honours the Chapada dos Parecis — the highland plateau in western Rondônia where the type locality lies — and by extension the Parecis people indigenous to that region. Moenkhausia is one of the largest characid genera, encompassing well over 80 described species distributed broadly across tropical South America, and M. parecis is among its most recently named members. Diagnostic features include 15–18 branched anal-fin rays and a round caudal-peduncle spot at the base of the caudal fin, which help distinguish it from other species in the genus.

Morphology

Moenkhausia parecis is a moderately slender characid reaching up to 3 in standard length (SL). Like other members of the genus it is laterally compressed, with a silvery body and the round caudal-peduncle spot characteristic of the species — a dark spot at the base of the caudal fin that is a key identification feature. Living fish reportedly show blue eyes.

The species has 15–18 branched anal-fin rays, a meristic count that falls within the range of several congeners but forms part of the original diagnostic character suite. Overall body form is typical of a mid-water schooling characid: a deep enough body for reasonable stability in current, a forked tail, and the complete lateral line found throughout the family. No striking sexually dimorphic characters have been described in the literature, and precise fin-ray counts and pigmentation details of preserved versus living specimens remain documented mainly in the original description.

Habitat

The type locality and only known habitat of Moenkhausia parecis is a system of terra-firme igarapés — upland, non-floodplain forest streams — on the Chapada dos Parecis plateau in Rondônia, within the upper rio Machado drainage of the Rio Madeira basin. These are clear-water highland creeks with swift currents, sand and leaf-litter substrates, and water temperatures cooler than lowland Amazonian streams by virtue of the plateau's altitude (around 1919 ft). The streams are narrow (5–8 ft wide) and relatively shallow (1–3 ft deep).

The species is associated with schooling behaviour, forming groups of 10–15 individuals in the midwater. The combination of clear, well-oxygenated, swift-flowing highland creek habitat and restricted geographic range means M. parecis is effectively an island species on a plateau — a pattern common among highland South American endemics. No specific water-chemistry parameters (temperature range, pH) have been formally published in the accessible literature for this species.

Feeding

Moenkhausia parecis is an omnivore. Gut-content data recorded at the type locality indicate a diet that includes ants, insect fragments, seeds, and plant matter — a mix consistent with a midwater schooling fish in a forested highland stream where terrestrial inputs are a major food source. Surface-falling invertebrates, particularly ants from the surrounding forest floor, feature prominently alongside aquatic insect material.

This diet profile mirrors that of many other small Moenkhausia species and reflects the ecology of the Chapada dos Parecis igarapés, where shaded, narrow stream channels receive substantial allochthonous input. In captivity, a varied diet of small live and frozen invertebrates (Daphnia, brine shrimp, small bloodworm), high-quality flake or micropellets, and occasional plant-based foods would be appropriate.

Mating

No published account of the mating behaviour of Moenkhausia parecis exists in the accessible literature. Based on the biology of the genus and family, it is expected to be an egg-scattering open spawner in the characid mode: males display to females in the water column or among fine-leaved plants, eggs are scattered without adhesion or nest construction, and no parental care is provided.

The species' natural habitat — a clear, swift upland creek with sand, gravel, and leaf-litter substrate — suggests spawning may be linked to substrate or current conditions typical of highland Amazonian stream characids. Until breeding observations are published, details of courtship, spawning triggers, and egg characteristics remain undescribed.

Breeding

Moenkhausia parecis has not been reported as established in the aquarium hobby and no captive breeding accounts have been published. As a member of Moenkhausia, it would be expected to follow the open egg-scattering pattern of the genus: eggs deposited among fine-leaved plants or over substrate with no adhesive filaments and no subsequent parental care, with adults likely to consume eggs if not separated. Fry would be expected to be small and to require appropriately fine first foods.

The species' apparent restriction to cool, swift, clear highland creek conditions at moderate elevation may mean that replicating its natural thermal and flow conditions is important for successful captive maintenance and breeding — a factor that distinguishes it from lowland Moenkhausia species more commonly encountered in the trade.

In the aquarium

Moenkhausia parecis is effectively absent from the aquarium hobby as of the time of writing; no commercial supply and no dedicated care literature exists. Given the ecological data from its type locality, a highland stream setup with clear, well-oxygenated water, moderate to good flow, and a sand-and-leaf-litter substrate would best approximate its natural conditions. Temperatures cooler than typical tropical fish tank settings may be appropriate, reflecting the plateau altitude of its native streams.

As a midwater schooling species — observed in groups of 10–15 individuals in the wild — it would require a school of at least six to eight to be at ease and display natural behaviour. Its omnivorous diet makes feeding uncomplicated. The species' limited range and agricultural threats to its habitat mean that any future trade specimens should ideally be sourced from captive-bred stock rather than wild collection, though no captive breeding programme is known to exist at present.

Conservation

Moenkhausia parecis has not been formally assessed by the IUCN Red List as of 2026. However, the original description and associated locality data highlight significant conservation concern. The species is known from a very restricted area of occupancy — estimated at under 12 mi² — on the Chapada dos Parecis plateau, a region experiencing rapid habitat conversion driven by industrial soy and corn agriculture. Highland stream habitats in this region are vulnerable to riparian clearing, sedimentation, and water-chemistry changes associated with intensified land use.

The combination of a tiny known range, a single drainage system, and ongoing large-scale habitat loss on the Chapada dos Parecis meets the criteria for a Vulnerable (D2) assessment under IUCN criteria based on area of occupancy, as noted by the species' original describers. Formal listing would require a comprehensive survey to determine whether additional populations exist in adjacent drainages. Until such data are available, the species should be treated as a narrow endemic at genuine risk from the agricultural expansion already well advanced across its native plateau.
