Moenkhausia petymbuaba is a small characid described from Brazil in 2006 by Lima and Birindelli. It belongs to the large and species-rich genus Moenkhausia — a grouping of South American tetras whose boundaries and internal relationships have been revised repeatedly as molecular and morphological evidence accumulates. Moenkhausia petymbuaba was described by Flávio C. T. Lima and José Luís O. Birindelli in 2006. The valid name is recorded in Eschmeyer's Catalog of Fishes as Moenkhausia petymbuaba Lima & Birindelli, 2006. Because it was described directly in the genus Moenkhausia, where it remains, the authority is not placed in parentheses.

Moenkhausia is one of the largest and most taxonomically complex genera in the family Characidae, encompassing well over 70 species distributed widely across South American drainages. The genus has long been considered polyphyletic or at least poorly defined, and ongoing revisions continue to refine species boundaries and generic limits. M. petymbuaba has not been widely reassigned since its description, and the name stands as originally published.

The specific epithet petymbuaba derives from a Tupi-Guaraní toponym or geographical reference; precise etymology was provided in the original description by Lima and Birindelli (2006), which remains the primary source for the type locality, holotype measurements, and diagnostic characters of the species.
