Moenkhausia plumbea is a small characid tetra from the remote headwaters of the rio Tapajós basin in the Serra do Cachimbo plateau of Pará, Brazil, where it lives in clear highland creeks cut off from the lowlands by large waterfalls. Described in 2010, it is one of a handful of Moenkhausia species endemic to isolated upland drainages and is distinguished by a striking pattern of large dark blotches that mark the anterior to central portions of each scale along the seven dorsalmost scale rows — a pigmentation pattern unlike most of its genus.

Taxonomy & naming

Moenkhausia plumbea was described by Sousa, Netto-Ferreira and Birindelli in 2010 and published in Neotropical Ichthyology 8(2): 255–264. The type locality is a tributary to the rio Braço Norte at the bridge of the BR-163 road near an Air Force Base in the municipality of Novo Progresso, Pará, Brazil, within the rio Peixoto de Azevedo drainage of the rio Teles Pires system, itself a major tributary of the rio Tapajós; coordinates 9°17'59"S, 54°50'00"W. The holotype is deposited at the Museu de Zoologia da Universidade de São Paulo (MZUSP 99415).

The specific epithet plumbea is Latin for leaden or lead-coloured, alluding to the dusky, metallic pigmentation of the scale blotches that characterise the species. The genus Moenkhausia Eigenmann, 1903, belongs to the large, paraphyletic family Characidae and comprises over a hundred small to medium-sized freshwater tetras distributed across tropical South America. Catalog of Fishes (Eschmeyer, Fricke and van der Laan) records the valid name as Moenkhausia plumbea Sousa, Netto-Ferreira and Birindelli, 2010.

The species is part of a broader complex of Moenkhausia forms from isolated upland drainages, where vicariance caused by large waterfalls has driven divergence from lowland relatives. No subspecies are recognised.

Morphology

Moenkhausia plumbea is a small tetra reaching a maximum recorded standard length of 2 in. Like other members of the genus it has the typical characid body plan: a moderately compressed, fusiform profile, a complete lateral line, an adipose fin, and a small, terminal mouth. The species is described as benthopelagic in habit — occupying the lower to mid water column — consistent with its creek habitat.

The most diagnostic feature is the pigmentation pattern: large, well-defined dark blotches occupy the anterior to central portions of each scale along the seven dorsalmost longitudinal series of scales, producing a strongly reticulated or blotched dorsal surface. This pattern differs markedly from the lateral stripe or simple scale-edge markings seen in many other Moenkhausia. Additional colouration details are not well documented in available sources beyond this defining feature.

Sexual dimorphism, if present, has not been formally described in the literature accessible here. In related Moenkhausia species females are typically deeper-bodied when gravid.

Habitat

The species is known from small creeks near headwaters in the Serra do Cachimbo region of Pará, Brazil, which forms the divide between the rio Tapajós and rio Xingu drainages. Critically, these headwater streams are isolated from downstream lowland fish communities by large waterfalls, a geographic barrier that has promoted endemism and may limit gene flow entirely.

The rio Braço Norte headwaters lie in upland cerrado and transitional forest, and the creeks of the Serra do Cachimbo plateau are typically clear, shallow, and fast-moving, with sandy or rocky substrates and variable amounts of riparian leaf litter. Physicochemical data specific to M. plumbea collection sites are not recorded in available sources, but headwater streams in this region tend to be soft and slightly acidic, with temperatures moderated by elevation relative to Amazonian lowland averages.

The species' restriction to headwater streams above major waterfalls defines both its ecology and its vulnerability: the habitat is geographically circumscribed and potentially sensitive to any catchment-level change.

Feeding

No published dietary study specific to Moenkhausia plumbea exists in the sources available here. The species is described as benthopelagic, suggesting it forages in the lower water column as well as at mid-depths. By analogy with other small creek-dwelling Moenkhausia, the diet likely includes small invertebrates — insect larvae, microcrustaceans, and terrestrial insects that fall onto the water surface — along with fine organic material and possibly algal films scraped from substrate surfaces.

In aquarium conditions, comparable small Moenkhausia are readily maintained on a diet of good-quality small flake or micro-pellets supplemented with frozen or live Daphnia, brine shrimp, and bloodworm. A varied diet supports condition and, in related species, enhances reproductive readiness.

Mating

No species-specific mating study has been published for Moenkhausia plumbea. Within the genus Moenkhausia, the general reproductive strategy is egg-scattering with no parental care, a pattern shared across a wide range of characid tetras. Males of related species typically pursue females and spawn among fine-leaved aquatic vegetation or over substrates, releasing adhesive eggs that settle or attach among plant material.

Courting behaviour in small-creek Moenkhausia has not been described for this species. The isolated, headwater habitat suggests that reproduction is likely timed with seasonal water-level and temperature fluctuations driven by wet- and dry-season cycles in the Tapajós catchment.

Breeding

Breeding in captivity has not been reported in the hobbyist or scientific literature accessible here. Based on the reproductive biology of congeners, M. plumbea is expected to be an egg-scattering open spawner: pairs or small groups would release small numbers of non-adhesive to slightly adhesive eggs over fine-leaved plants or substrate, with the adults providing no parental care and likely consuming their own eggs if not separated.

For aquarists attempting to breed related Moenkhausia species, standard practice involves a well-planted or mop-equipped spawning tank, slightly soft and acidic conditioning water, and removal of adults after spawning is observed. Eggs of small characids typically hatch within 24–48 hours at tropical temperatures, with fry becoming free-swimming a few days later and requiring infusoria or commercial fry foods as initial rations before graduating to newly hatched brine shrimp.

In the aquarium

Moenkhausia plumbea is rarely, if ever, available in the aquarium trade. Its restricted range in isolated Serra do Cachimbo headwaters, combined with its recent description, means it has not entered commercial fish culture, and wild-caught specimens are extremely unlikely to be encountered by hobbyists.

For the dedicated aquarist who does obtain specimens, care would likely follow the general pattern for small, creek-adapted Moenkhausia: a well-filtered, moderately planted aquarium with gentle current, soft to slightly acidic water, and a diet of small live and frozen foods supplemented with quality prepared foods. As a schooling characid it should be kept in groups of six or more. Tankmates, if any, should be peaceful and similarly sized. Given its upland creek origin, temperatures in the low-to-mid 20s Celsius would be more appropriate than warmer Amazonian lowland setups.

Data on long-term captive maintenance are absent from the literature, and care parameters here are extrapolated from related species and habitat data.

Conservation

Moenkhausia plumbea is assessed as Least Concern (LC) on the IUCN Red List, with the assessment dated 7 November 2018. Despite its restricted known range, the species' headwater habitat in the Serra do Cachimbo is relatively remote and not subject to the intensive agricultural or urban pressures that threaten many Amazonian fish.

Nonetheless, the natural isolation imposed by the large waterfalls that define its range also means that the species has no colonisation buffer if local populations are extirpated. The Serra do Cachimbo lies in a region of the Brazilian Amazon where deforestation pressure and road-associated development (the BR-163 highway corridor passes through the type locality area) are ongoing concerns. Monitoring of headwater habitats in this plateau would be prudent given the species' narrow endemism, even in the absence of immediate threat.
