Taxonomy & naming
Moenkhausia rubra was formally described by Pastana and Dagosta in 2014 in the journal Neotropical Ichthyology (volume 12, number 2, page 390), with figures drawn from specimens taken at the type locality in the rio Juruena, rio Juruena basin, upper rio Tapajós drainage, Mato Grosso, Brazil. Eschmeyer's Catalog of Fishes at the California Academy of Sciences confirms the valid name as Moenkhausia rubra Pastana & Dagosta, 2014, and records the species at CAS catalog entry sp. id 73357.
The genus Moenkhausia is a large, diverse assemblage of South American characids distributed broadly across cis-Andean drainages. Within this genus, M. rubra belongs to a broad Characidae sensu lato grouping; a note in the Catalog of Fishes acknowledges that recent higher-level revisions of the family have at times placed certain Moenkhausia in a broader Acestrorhamphidae arrangement, though the species name itself and genus assignment remain stable. The top-level family assignment here follows the original description and current conventional usage: Characidae.
Morphology
Moenkhausia rubra is a small tetra with a maximum recorded standard length of 2 in. The body is laterally compressed and proportioned similarly to other mid-sized Moenkhausia. The most diagnostic and striking feature is coloration: live specimens display a reddish wash over the body, with the snout and gular (throat) area strongly orange and the eye predominantly orange, its dorsal rim tinged blue-green — an unusual and eye-catching combination in the genus.
Fin pigmentation provides reliable diagnostic meristics. Dark pigmentation is concentrated on the anteriormost rays of both the dorsal and anal fins, producing a neat dark edge to these structures. A dark blotch sits on the caudal peduncle and extends onto the middle rays of the caudal fin. One round humeral spot marks the shoulder region. Meristically, the species carries 17 to 20 branched anal-fin rays and 33 to 34 scales along the lateral line, characters that together with the color pattern allow separation from sympatric congeners.
Habitat
The known range of Moenkhausia rubra is confined to the rio Juruena and rio Juína, both within the rio Juruena basin of the upper Tapajós drainage, Mato Grosso state, Brazil. This places it entirely within the Amazon basin, in a region of elevated Cerrado-transitional and Amazonian forest draining toward the Tapajós and ultimately the Amazon mainstem.
FishBase classifies the species as benthopelagic, occupying tropical freshwater. The upper Tapajós tributaries in Mato Grosso are characteristically warm, with water temperatures in the tropical range expected for this latitude. No detailed field notes on microhabitat preferences at the collection locality have been widely published; the benthopelagic classification suggests the species uses the water column above the substrate rather than being strictly bottom-dwelling.
Feeding
No published diet studies specific to Moenkhausia rubra are available in the accessible literature. Like the majority of small, mid-water Moenkhausia, it is likely an opportunistic omnivore, taking small invertebrates, aquatic insect larvae, and particulate organic matter in the water column and at the surface.
In aquarium conditions, small characids of this type generally accept a wide variety of prepared foods including finely ground flake and small pellets, and do well when offered regular supplements of small live or frozen invertebrates such as Daphnia, baby brine shrimp, or micro-worms. A varied diet is recommended to support the distinctive warm coloration of the species.
Mating
No detailed field or laboratory observations of mating behaviour in Moenkhausia rubra have been published. Based on general Moenkhausia biology, the species is expected to be a typical egg-scattering characid: males likely engage in active pursuit of females with rapid courtship chases, displaying the reddish body and orange facial coloring as visual signals, with no territory establishment or prolonged pair bond.
Spawning is expected to occur in open water or among fine-leaved vegetation, consistent with the broad pattern seen across the genus. As with most small characids, there is no parental investment beyond the spawning act itself.
Breeding
No captive breeding accounts for Moenkhausia rubra are recorded in the accessible hobbyist or scientific literature as of the time of writing, consistent with its status as a recently described and rarely exported species. By analogy with the broader genus, breeding would be expected to follow the standard Moenkhausia pattern: egg-scattering over fine-leaved plants or substrate, adhesive or semi-adhesive eggs, no parental care, and adults that will consume eggs if not removed.
Aquarists successfully breeding the species would likely use the standard approach for small characids: a separate, well-planted or moss-filled breeding tank, soft slightly acidic to neutral water, a small temperature rise as a trigger, removal of adults after spawning, and fine live foods for the small fry once they are free-swimming.
In the aquarium
Moenkhausia rubra remains an uncommon species in the aquarium hobby; it is not yet established in regular trade and most hobbyists will encounter it only through specialist importers or collectors with access to Mato Grosso material. For those who obtain it, its vivid reddish body and orange-faced coloring make it a genuinely attractive small tetra suited to a community of similarly sized, peaceful fishes.
As a small species reaching around 2 in, it can be housed in a moderately sized aquarium. Warm, well-filtered water matching tropical Mato Grosso conditions — temperatures in the mid- to upper-20s Celsius and near-neutral pH — would be appropriate. Like most Moenkhausia, it is expected to do best in groups of six or more, where the social structure supports natural behaviour and reduces individual stress. A planted tank with open swimming space and subdued or moderate lighting would show the coloration to best advantage.
Conservation
Moenkhausia rubra was assessed by the IUCN Red List and received a status of Least Concern (LC), with the assessment completed on 7 November 2018. The Least Concern status reflects that no major range-wide population declines or critical threats had been identified at the time of assessment, rather than indicating that the species is abundant or its habitat secure.
The species is endemic to the rio Juruena basin within Mato Grosso, a region subject to ongoing agricultural expansion, deforestation pressure, and hydroelectric development across the upper Tapajós watershed. A restricted endemic with a relatively small known range is inherently vulnerable to local habitat change, and continued monitoring of the Mato Grosso interior drainages is warranted. No specific conservation measures targeting the species are recorded.
