Moenkhausia schultzi is a small characid from the Orinoco drainage of Venezuela, known from the Río Autana and associated blackwaters of the upper Orinoco basin. One of roughly 78 described species in the genus Moenkhausia, it is rarely encountered in the ornamental-fish trade and remains poorly documented in the scientific literature — most data on its ecology, diet, and breeding behaviour has yet to be formally recorded. What is known places it firmly among the soft-water, tropical tetras of lowland South America, sharing the Orinoco's remarkable ichthyofaunal diversity.

Taxonomy & naming

Moenkhausia schultzi was described by Alfredo Fernández-Yépez in 1950. The genus Moenkhausia, first erected by David Starr Jordan in 1895, is one of the largest in the family Characidae, with nearly eighty valid species spread across much of tropical South America. Eschmeyer's Catalog of Fishes (Fricke, Eschmeyer & van der Laan) is the authority for the valid name Moenkhausia schultzi Fernández-Yépez, 1950.

The specific epithet schultzi is a patronym, almost certainly honouring a collector or colleague of the describer, though the exact dedicatee is not noted in sources currently available. Fernández-Yépez was a Venezuelan ichthyologist whose taxonomic work in the mid-twentieth century documented many characid species from the great river systems of Venezuela. FishBase confirms M. schultzi as one of 78 Moenkhausia species recognised as of the time of data compilation.

Morphology

Moenkhausia schultzi is a small characid with the laterally compressed, streamlined body plan typical of the genus. Habitat

FishBase records Moenkhausia schultzi from the Río Autana, a blackwater tributary of the upper Orinoco in Venezuela, and more broadly from the Orinoco drainage. The Río Autana drains the tepui highlands of Amazonas state, passing through lowland gallery forest before entering the Orinoco; its waters are typically warm, acidic, and tea-brown from dissolved humic acids, with very low mineral content — the classic blackwater signature of the Venezuelan interior.

The Orinoco system as a whole supports extraordinary fish diversity, and its blackwater tributaries are characterised by soft, acidic conditions with pH values often well below 6 and conductivities near the detection limit of standard meters. FishBase classifies M. schultzi as freshwater, benthopelagic, and tropical. No depth range or specific microhabitat preference has been formally published.

Feeding

Fry would require fine first foods such as infusoria or commercial liquid preparations before accepting newly hatched brine shrimp.

In the aquarium

Moenkhausia schultzi is not a species commonly encountered in the ornamental-fish trade and is essentially absent from hobbyist literature. No dedicated care sheets from major English-language hobby sources were located during research. Aquarists keeping the species are working from first principles, applying the general framework for blackwater Moenkhausia: soft, slightly acidic water in the 75–82 °F range, subdued lighting, dark substrate, and a school of at least six individuals to allow natural social behaviour.

A planted aquarium with open swimming space and some cover — driftwood, leaf litter, floating plants to diffuse light — would replicate key structural features of the Río Autana and its tributary creeks. Tankmates should be peaceful species comfortable in similar water chemistry, such as other small characids and dwarf cichlids from the Orinoco basin. Given the paucity of published data, keepers should document their observations and consider sharing them with the wider community.

Conservation

Moenkhausia schultzi has not been assessed by the IUCN Red List; no species-specific evaluation was located during research, and FishBase records its status as Not Evaluated. The absence of an assessment reflects the species' obscurity rather than confirmed security — many small, range-restricted South American characids are simply below the threshold of current assessment effort.

The Río Autana watershed in Amazonas state, Venezuela, is within a region of relatively low human population density and retains much of its natural forest cover, but deforestation, illegal mining (garimpo), and oil and gas exploration are long-standing pressures across the upper Orinoco basin.
