Taxonomy & naming
Moenkhausia solaris was described by Silva, Santana & Marinho in 2025 in the journal Neotropical Ichthyology. The type locality is a stream tributary of the Rio 13 de Maio, at the PCH Salto do Curuá near Novo Progresso, Pará, Brazil, placing the species squarely on the Serra do Cachimbo plateau. The holotype measured 2 in standard length. Eschmeyer's Catalog of Fishes (Fricke, Eschmeyer & Fong) is the governing authority for the valid name; because the species was described directly in Moenkhausia, the authority is cited without parentheses.
Moenkhausia is one of the largest and most heterogeneous genera of New World characids, with well over a hundred species distributed across lowland and upland South America. M. solaris belongs to the tetra family Characidae in its broad sense. Its discovery on the Cachimbo plateau — a sandstone and granite upland that acts as a biogeographical barrier and isolates headwater systems — is consistent with the region's reputation for producing narrowly endemic fishes with disjunct records on either side of the divide. The species had not previously appeared in any hobbyist database at the time of caching; FishBase had not yet indexed it.
Morphology
Moenkhausia solaris is a small tetra reaching approximately 1–2.5 in standard length, with the size range documented across both of its known basins (1–2.5 in in the Xingu-basin Curuá population; 1–2 in in the Tapajós-basin Teles Pires population). The holotype is a mid-range individual at 2 in SL. These are modest dimensions that place M. solaris firmly in the small-to-medium end of the genus.
The defining characteristic in life is colouration: the body carries a bright gold sheen, while the adipose fin and caudal fin region flush red. This combination — a luminous, sun-coloured flank set off by red in the fins — is the character that inspired the species name. Beyond this live colouration, the primary description does not record sexual dichromatism or dimorphism; no notable differences between males and females were observed in the type series. Preserved specimens, as with most characids, will lose the vivid life colours, so field photographs from the type locality are the best guide to the fish's appearance.
Habitat
Moenkhausia solaris is endemic to the Serra do Cachimbo plateau in the state of Pará, Brazil, occurring in two geographically separated drainages: the Curuá River (Xingu basin) and the Teles Pires River (Tapajós basin). The two populations are disjunct, separated by the drainage divide of the plateau itself, which makes this one of the relatively few tetra species known from both the Xingu and Tapajós systems at their headwaters. The type locality — a small tributary stream near Novo Progresso — gives a sense of the habitat: a small, clear-water stream with preserved riparian vegetation, shallow water over a sandy bottom, and dense aquatic and marginal vegetation.
The Serra do Cachimbo is a high-altitude sandstone plateau, and its streams tend to be soft, slightly acidic, and low in conductivity relative to lowland Amazonian rivers. Although precise water-chemistry measurements from the type locality were not recorded in the cache, the combination of sandy substrate, intact gallery forest, and small stream dimensions is characteristic of the region's upper-drainage habitats. The original description notes that the riparian vegetation was well preserved at collection sites — a detail that may be relevant to understanding the species' habitat requirements and its sensitivities.
Feeding
Diet has not been documented for Moenkhausia solaris in the primary description or in any subsequent published account available at the time of writing. Like most small characids of Amazonian headwater streams, it is likely an opportunistic omnivore, consuming small invertebrates — insect larvae, microcrustaceans, and terrestrial insects that fall onto the water surface — as well as algae and plant detritus.
In aquarium conditions, small tetras of this size and ecology typically accept fine-grade prepared foods readily: micro-pellets, crushed flake, and small frozen or live foods such as Artemia nauplii, Daphnia, and bloodworm. Until dietary data from wild-caught specimens is published, this remains an inference from congeners rather than documented fact.
Mating
Mating behaviour has not been documented in Moenkhausia solaris. As a member of the genus Moenkhausia and the family Characidae, the species almost certainly follows the egg-scattering reproductive strategy that is standard across New World tetras: males pursue females, spawning takes place among fine-leaved plants or over substrate, adhesive or semi-adhesive eggs are broadcast, and neither parent provides any subsequent care.
No sexual dimorphism was observed in the type series, which means that males and females cannot be distinguished by external characters alone under current knowledge — a point that would complicate both captive breeding attempts and any future field study of reproductive behaviour. Seasonal spawning cues in the Cachimbo plateau streams are unknown but likely linked to the Amazonian wet season and associated changes in water temperature, photoperiod, and water level.
Breeding
Breeding has not been documented for Moenkhausia solaris in captivity or in any published account. Based on the biology of close relatives in Moenkhausia, the expected mode is open egg-scattering over fine-leaved vegetation or among roots, with small adhesive eggs, no parental care, and adults that will consume their own eggs if not separated after spawning.
Because the species was only described in 2025 and had not reached the aquarium trade at the time of the primary description, no captive breeding records exist. Hobbyists who obtain specimens would be working essentially from first principles, guided by the husbandry of similar Moenkhausia species. Any successful captive spawning would represent genuinely new information about the species.
In the aquarium
Moenkhausia solaris had not entered the ornamental fish trade at the time it was described and is not currently available through normal hobby channels. As a newly described species from a protected and relatively remote region of Pará, it is unlikely to appear in the aquarium trade in the near term.
For hobbyists who might eventually encounter it, the ecological profile — small stream with sandy substrate, intact riparian cover, soft and slightly acidic water — suggests standard small-tetra husbandry: a well-planted, dimly lit aquarium with gentle filtration, soft to moderately soft water, temperatures in the lower-to-mid 20s Celsius, and a quiet, peaceful community. Its modest size (under 2.5 in) and the apparent lack of aggressive behaviour typical of small Moenkhausia make it compatible with other soft-water community fishes. The brilliant gold-and-red colouration would make it an attractive species if it ever becomes available as tank-bred stock.
Conservation
Moenkhausia solaris was assessed as Least Concern (LC) by the IUCN in 2024, a status recorded in the original 2025 description. This may seem counterintuitive for a species with such a restricted range — endemic to a single upland plateau and known from only two river systems — but the IUCN assessment reflects the absence of identified threats to the habitat at the time of evaluation. The primary description notes that collection sites had well-preserved riparian vegetation, suggesting that the streams it inhabits are not immediately subject to deforestation or degradation.
However, the Serra do Cachimbo plateau sits within one of the most rapidly changing agricultural frontiers in Brazil, and the broader Tapajós and Xingu headwater regions face ongoing pressure from land conversion, infrastructure development, and hydroelectric projects. The PCH Salto do Curuá — a small hydroelectric plant near the type locality — is itself an indicator of development activity in the watershed. A Least Concern listing with a restricted range carries an implicit caveat: conditions that produced it can change faster than assessment cycles, and this species has limited resilience to habitat loss given how few localities it occupies.
