Taxonomy & naming
Moenkhausia venerei was described in 2016 by Petrolli, Azevedo-Santos and Benine, with the original description published in Zootaxa. The type locality is the rio Araguaia near Barra do Garças in the state of Mato Grosso, central Brazil. Eschmeyer's Catalog of Fishes records the valid name as Moenkhausia venerei Petrolli, Azevedo-Santos & Benine, 2016.
The species belongs to Moenkhausia, one of the largest and most diverse genera in the family Characidae, encompassing small to medium-sized tetras distributed broadly across South America. Within the genus, M. venerei is most readily separated from the superficially similar M. collettii by its wider, more prominent longitudinal lateral stripe, and from M. copei by its branched anal-fin ray count, which runs from 19 to 24. These meristic and colour-pattern differences formed the morphological basis of the original description.
Morphology
Moenkhausia venerei is a small, laterally compressed characin. The largest specimen recorded in the original description measured 1.5 in standard length, and FishBase lists a maximum of 1.5 in SL, placing it firmly among the smaller members of the genus.
The most striking external features are two colour-pattern elements: a dark, well-defined longitudinal stripe that extends the full length of the body from the snout to the base of the caudal fin, and a contrasting dark marking that traces the base of the anal fin. Together these marks make the species recognisable in the field and in collections. The overall body shape is typical of small riverine Moenkhausia — streamlined, with a moderately forked caudal fin and the family's characteristic adipose fin.
Habitat
The known range of Moenkhausia venerei is the rio Araguaia drainage in Mato Grosso, central Brazil. The Araguaia is a large, seasonally flooding river system of the Brazilian Central Plateau, characterised by clear-to-turbid waters, extensive sandy beaches, and a pronounced dry and wet season cycle that drives dramatic fluctuations in water level and available habitat.
Small characins in this drainage typically inhabit the margins of main channels, tributary streams, and floodplain pools, where current is reduced and vegetation or submerged structure provides cover. The rio Araguaia system supports a rich assemblage of small endemic characins, including multiple Hyphessobrycon and Creagrutus species, reflecting the biogeographic distinctiveness of central Brazilian drainages. FishBase records M. venerei as benthopelagic and tropical.
Feeding
No detailed dietary studies have been published specifically for Moenkhausia venerei. FishBase assigns it a trophic level of 3.2, consistent with a broadly omnivorous diet incorporating small invertebrates and some plant or detrital material — the typical feeding ecology of small Moenkhausia in South American lowland river systems.
By analogy with well-studied congeners, the species likely feeds opportunistically on aquatic and terrestrial insects, small crustaceans, and organic debris encountered in the water column and near the substrate. In an aquarium context, small Moenkhausia readily accept good-quality flake, micro-pellets, and frozen or live foods such as Daphnia, cyclops, and finely chopped bloodworm.
Mating
No courtship observations specific to Moenkhausia venerei have been published. Like all Moenkhausia, it is expected to be an egg-scattering characin with no parental care. In related species such as M. sanctaefilomenae, males display to females in schools or pairs, with spawning activity typically peaking in the early morning hours.
Breeding is most readily induced under soft, slightly acidic conditions, with fine-leaved aquatic vegetation or spawning mops providing a substrate for the adhesive eggs. Males in a mixed-sex group display against one another, and the presence of multiple males tends to intensify courtship behaviour, which is characteristic of the genus.
Breeding
Moenkhausia venerei has not been bred in captivity under controlled and published conditions, but the reproductive biology of the genus is well characterised through related species. Moenkhausia are free egg-scatterers that deposit small adhesive eggs among fine-leaved plants or over spawning mops; females may release eggs in small batches over successive days, and spawning events can yield up to several hundred eggs across a reproductive period.
At temperatures of 72–79 °F and soft, slightly acidic water (pH 6.0–7.0, hardness 1–10 dGH), eggs of congeners typically hatch within 24–36 hours. Fry become free-swimming after a further three to four days and require very small first foods such as infusoria or commercial liquid fry food before graduating to newly hatched brine shrimp. Adults consume eggs readily and should be removed from the spawning vessel after egg deposition.
In the aquarium
Moenkhausia venerei is essentially unknown in the aquarium hobby. As a recently described species from the rio Araguaia, it has not entered regular trade channels and no captive-care accounts are available. The following guidance extrapolates from the genus and from the known ecology of the species.
A small species at under 1.5 in, it would suit a modestly sized aquarium of 23.5 in or more, kept with similarly sized, peaceful tankmates. Water conditions reflecting the rio Araguaia system — temperatures in the range of 72–82 °F, pH 6.0–7.5, and moderate hardness — would be appropriate. Like most small Moenkhausia, it is expected to be a schooling fish that benefits from being kept in a group of six or more. A planted aquarium with open swimming space and subdued lighting would suit its natural habitat and help the species settle and display comfortably.
Conservation
Moenkhausia venerei has not been formally assessed on the IUCN Red List; it is too recently described (2016) to have undergone a complete evaluation process. Its conservation status is therefore Not Evaluated (NE).
The species is endemic to the rio Araguaia basin in Mato Grosso, a region that has experienced significant land-use change over recent decades, with agricultural expansion, deforestation, and altered river hydrology affecting freshwater habitats across the Brazilian Central Plateau. Whether M. venerei is locally abundant or genuinely rare within the Araguaia drainage is not established by available data. A formal assessment, including population surveys across the drainage, would be needed to determine whether the species faces meaningful conservation concern.
