Moenkhausia xinguensis is a characid tetra native to the Xingu River basin of Brazil, originally described by Franz Steindachner in 1882 from material collected in the Rio Xingu. Reaching just over 4 in in total length, it is one of the larger members of its genus and inhabits the benthopelagic zone of clear, acidic tropical and subtropical freshwaters. The species is assessed as Least Concern by the IUCN, though the Xingu system faces mounting pressures from dam construction and habitat modification.

Taxonomy & naming

Moenkhausia xinguensis was originally described by the Austrian ichthyologist Franz Steindachner in 1882 under the name Tetragonopterus xinguensis, with the type locality given as the Rio Xingu in Brazil; the holotype is deposited as NMW 57826 at the Naturhistorisches Museum Wien in Vienna. Eschmeyer's Catalog of Fishes (CAS) lists the current valid name as Moenkhausia xinguensis (Steindachner, 1882), reflecting its transfer from Tetragonopterus to Moenkhausia; the parenthetical authority signals that the species was originally placed in a different genus.

Moenkhausia is one of the largest neotropical characid genera, comprising more than 90 described species distributed widely across South American drainages. Within the genus, species are united by a scaled base to the caudal fin and certain meristic characters; many species are superficially similar, making field identification challenging. The CAS entry notes the family as Acestrorhamphidae in some recent classifications, though FishBase and broad convention continue to treat the group within Characidae. The top-level family field is given here as Characidae per that convention.

Morphology

Moenkhausia xinguensis reaches a maximum total length of approximately 4 in, placing it among the larger Moenkhausia species. Like most members of the genus, it is a moderately deep-bodied, laterally compressed characid with the scaled caudal-fin base that defines Moenkhausia. The body is generally silvery, and the species shows the typical complement of tetra features: an adipose fin, a forked caudal fin, and the large eyes characteristic of many open-water characins.

Detailed meristic and colour data are sparse in the available literature for this species. FishBase records it as a benthopelagic fish, suggesting it occupies the middle and lower portions of the water column rather than schooling exclusively near the surface. As with many Moenkhausia, live colouration likely includes lateral flank iridescence and possibly caudal markings, though the precise pattern has not been fully characterised in published hobbyist or laboratory accounts.

Habitat

The species is native to the Xingu River basin in the state of Pará, Brazil. The Xingu is a major southern tributary of the Amazon, rising on the Brazilian Shield and flowing north into the lower Amazon near its mouth. The river is characterised by rapid current in its middle and lower reaches, clear water over rocky substrates, and acidic conditions typical of blackwater or clearwater Amazonian systems.

Biotope records from the lower Xingu near Altamira describe water temperatures of approximately 81–83 °F, pH around 6.5, and acidic blackwater to clear-water conditions. FishBase confirms the species as a freshwater subtropical fish and places it in the benthopelagic zone. Moenkhausia xinguensis therefore shares its habitat with a diverse endemic ichthyofauna that has been studied intensively in connection with the Belo Monte hydroelectric complex, one of the largest dams ever built, which impounds part of the Xingu.

Feeding

No species-specific dietary study of Moenkhausia xinguensis has been published in the available literature. Based on its benthopelagic habit and the broader biology of Moenkhausia, it is likely an opportunistic omnivore feeding on small invertebrates, insect larvae, microcrustaceans, and plant material encountered at or near the substrate and in the mid-water column.

In the aquarium, closely related Moenkhausia species readily accept a wide range of prepared and live foods, including quality flake and micro-pellets, frozen bloodworm, Daphnia, and brine shrimp. Varied feeding that includes live or frozen invertebrate foods supports optimal condition. Given its larger size relative to many tetras, it can handle correspondingly larger food items.

Mating

Specific mating behaviour has not been described in the published literature for Moenkhausia xinguensis. Like other members of the genus and most neotropical characids, it is presumed to be a non-guarding, open egg-scatterer that spawns over fine-leaved vegetation or substrate without forming pair bonds. Males likely compete through display and pursue receptive females, scattering adhesive eggs among vegetation or into the water column.

In closely related Moenkhausia species kept in captivity, spawning activity increases under conditioning with small live foods and slight temperature elevation. Spawning typically occurs during the morning hours. No courtship band or elaborate sexual display comparable to some other groups has been documented; differences in condition and fullness of abdomen are the primary cues available to distinguish spawning readiness.

Breeding

No detailed captive-breeding account specific to Moenkhausia xinguensis has been located in the available sources. The general Moenkhausia breeding pattern — egg-scattering over fine-leaved plants or spawning mops, small adhesive or semi-adhesive eggs, no parental care, and adults that will consume their own eggs — is expected to apply. Eggs are typically removed to a separate rearing vessel to protect them from the adults.

At tropical temperatures in the range of 79–84 °F, neotropical tetra eggs generally hatch within 24–48 hours, with free-swimming fry appearing a day or two later. Fry require infusoria or commercial liquid fry food initially before graduating to newly hatched brine shrimp nauplii. Hobbyist accounts for closely related Moenkhausia species suggest the species is not particularly difficult to spawn once conditioned, though the relatively large adult size means a reasonably spacious breeding vessel is advisable.

In the aquarium

Moenkhausia xinguensis is infrequently seen in the mainstream aquarium trade, and hobbyist-specific accounts are limited. Its larger size — over 4 in — and probable active swimming behaviour suggest it requires a generously sized aquarium; a tank of at least 47 in in length is advisable for a proper school. Like most Moenkhausia, it is likely peaceful toward similarly sized tankmates and best kept in groups of six or more.

Water chemistry should reflect its origin in the clear to blackwater Xingu system: soft to moderately soft, acidic to slightly acidic water in the range of pH 6.0–7.0, and temperatures of 79–84 °F. Good filtration with moderate current and some surface movement is appropriate. Biotope-themed setups replicating the rocky, clear-water Xingu environment — fine sand, smooth river stones, and driftwood with minimal planting — would suit the species well and make an unusual display for aquarists interested in the endemic Xingu ichthyofauna.

Conservation

Moenkhausia xinguensis is assessed as Least Concern (LC) on the IUCN Red List, with the assessment recorded as of 7 November 2018. While the LC status reflects a currently stable population without immediate threat of rapid decline, the Xingu River basin is under significant anthropogenic pressure. The Belo Monte dam complex, completed in stages during the 2010s, has altered flow regimes and inundated portions of the middle Xingu, affecting the endemic and near-endemic ichthyofauna of the region.

The long-term consequences for Xingu endemics, including this species, are an active area of concern among Brazilian ichthyologists. Conservation of the remaining free-flowing stretches of the Xingu and its tributary streams is important for maintaining the full complement of endemic fishes. Hobbyists acquiring Moenkhausia xinguensis should seek tank-bred stock where available to minimise pressure on wild populations in a basin already subject to heavy habitat modification.
