Taxonomy & naming
Nannostomus minimus was described by Carl H. Eigenmann in 1909 from material collected in Guyana. The valid name, as recorded in Eschmeyer's Catalog of Fishes, is Nannostomus minimus Eigenmann, 1909. The species is placed within the genus Nannostomus (family Lebiasinidae), which encompasses the pencilfish — a group of slender, laterally compressed characoids found across tropical South America.
The genus Nannostomus is notable for the oblique resting posture adopted by most of its members, an unusual behaviour among characoids and one of the first things an observer notices in an aquarium. Nannostomus minimus shares this trait with its congeners. Within the genus it is distinguished primarily by its very small adult size and specific pattern details; its closest relatives are other small pencilfish of the Guiana Shield drainage systems. It is sometimes sympatric with N. espei in parts of its range, though the two tend to partition microhabitat — N. minimus favouring more densely vegetated marginal zones over open water.
Morphology
Nannostomus minimus is one of the smallest pencilfish, reaching a maximum recorded standard length of approximately 1 in. The body is slender and laterally compressed, typical of the Nannostomus body plan, tapering to a pointed snout. The species adopts the characteristic oblique resting posture — head tilted slightly upward — that is the signature of the genus at rest.
Coloration follows the general pencilfish scheme: a dark lateral stripe running from the snout to the caudal peduncle, with lighter zones above and below. Fins are mostly hyaline (clear) but males develop reddish pigmentation at the base of the caudal fin and in some fins, which intensifies during display and spawning. Females are typically plumper in the belly region, especially when gravid, and generally show somewhat less intense red coloration. The overall impression is of a finely marked, jewel-like miniature fish whose colours reward close observation under good light.
Habitat
In the wild Nannostomus minimus occupies sluggish blackwater tributaries, small rivers, and swampy areas with dense aquatic vegetation and accumulations of leaf litter in the Potaro and Mazaruni River basins of Guyana. Distribution records confirm its presence in those two basins; it is a fish of the Guiana Shield drainage. It tends to occur in marginal zones with structural cover rather than in open water, and is often found where decaying leaves, submerged roots, and overhanging vegetation create a shadowed, tannin-rich microenvironment.
Water in these habitats is typically soft, acidic, and heavily stained by humic compounds leaching from organic matter, with low conductivity and minimal buffering capacity. Reported water parameters for the species' natural range include temperatures of approximately 72–82 °F and pH values from around 4.0 to 6.5, with low general hardness (roughly 18–90 ppm). These extreme soft-water, low-pH conditions are characteristic of the Rio Negro drainage and adjacent Guiana Shield blackwater systems.
Feeding
Nannostomus minimus is a micropredator in nature, feeding on very small invertebrates — tiny insects, micro-crustaceans, zooplankton, and similar items — that it picks selectively from the water column and from among leaf litter and vegetation. Its small gape limits it to minute prey items, which has direct implications for feeding in captivity.
In the aquarium it accepts a range of tiny live and frozen foods, including newly hatched brine shrimp (Artemia nauplii), Moina, grindal worms, and micro-worms. The feeding response is more vigorous with live or frozen items than with dry foods, and many keepers provide a rotation to ensure good condition. High-quality micropellets or finely crushed flake can supplement the diet but should not be the sole offering. Given its size, feeding competition from larger tankmates can be a problem; it does best in a species tank or with similarly scaled, non-aggressive companions.
Mating
Nannostomus minimus is an egg-scattering, open spawner that deposits adhesive eggs among fine-leaved aquatic plants or spawning mops, with no parental care. Males court females with lateral displays, intensifying fin and body coloration, and chase rival males from favoured positions in the tank. The oblique posture becomes more pronounced and exaggerated during courtship interactions.
Spawning is triggered by good conditioning — a varied live-food diet, very soft acidic water, and stable warmth in the lower-to-mid range of the species' temperature tolerance. As with most pencilfish, spawning activity is most intense in the early morning hours. Pairs or small groups can be used; conditioning a group of several adults together typically produces more spawning activity than isolated pairs.
Breeding
Breeding Nannostomus minimus follows the general pencilfish pattern. Conditioned adults scatter small adhesive eggs among fine-leaved plants such as Java moss, hornwort, or spawning mops. Because the adults eat their own eggs and offer no parental care, eggs are best harvested — either by removing the adults after a spawning session or by using a separate spawning tank and moving the plant or mop to a rearing vessel.
The eggs hatch after approximately one to two days depending on temperature, and the larvae are extremely small and initially require infusoria or commercial fry foods in the 5–50 micron range before they can manage Paramecium and eventually newly hatched brine shrimp. The tiny fry are fragile and need excellent water quality with very gentle filtration — a sponge filter or a static, air-bubbled setup is typical. Growth is slow and the fry remain vulnerable for longer than is the case with larger pencilfish species.
In the aquarium
Nannostomus minimus suits nano aquaria very well on account of its minute size, but it is not the most forgiving of pencilfish to keep. It demands soft, acidic water — ideally in the pH 4.5–6.5 range with very low hardness — and is sensitive to fluctuations in water quality and chemistry. A well-established, heavily planted blackwater tank with botanical elements (dried leaves, seed pods) that maintain naturally low pH and tannin levels provides the closest approximation to its wild conditions and best supports long-term health and coloration.
Because of its small size and tentative feeding behaviour, it should be kept with similarly scaled, non-boisterous tankmates. Other dwarf pencilfish, small rasboras, or micro-tetras with compatible water chemistry requirements are suitable companions. Keeping it in a group of six or more reduces skittishness and encourages the natural lateral display behaviour. Bright lighting is not essential and moderate to subdued illumination is preferred; dark substrate and background and the presence of floating plants contribute to bolder, more settled behaviour.
Conservation
Nannostomus minimus is assessed as Least Concern (LC) on the IUCN Red List, with the assessment published on 31 December 2020. The species' distribution within the Potaro and Mazaruni River basins of Guyana encompasses habitats that, while not free from broader regional pressures such as gold mining and deforestation in Guyana's interior, have not yet resulted in population declines significant enough to elevate the species above LC status.
As a fish of pristine or near-pristine blackwater forest streams, it is indirectly dependent on the health of the forest catchment for the water chemistry conditions it requires. Land-use change that raises conductivity, pH, or turbidity in its home streams would represent a real threat to local populations. The IUCN Least Concern designation reflects current population status, not an absence of potential future risk. In the ornamental trade it appears in specialist listings but is less common than larger pencilfish, and most specimens available are wild-caught; demand on wild stocks is comparatively low.
