Bryconamericus hyphesson was described by Carl H. Eigenmann in 1909, placing it in the genus Bryconamericus — a large Neotropical genus within the family Characidae. Eigenmann was one of the most prolific describers of South American characins in the early twentieth century, and his Guiana work yielded numerous small stream species that remain poorly known today.
The valid name is recorded in Eschmeyer's Catalog of Fishes as Bryconamericus hyphesson Eigenmann, 1909. FishBase notes that the family assignment has been debated — some recent workers have referred Bryconamericus and allied genera to a broader Stevardiidae — but for the purposes of this atlas the family is treated as Characidae in line with prevailing usage. The type locality is the Potaro River system of Guyana, one of the major southern tributaries of the Essequibo.
Morphology
Bryconamericus hyphesson is a very small fish, reaching a maximum recorded total length of 1.5 in. Like other members of the genus it is slender and fusiform, with the typical characid body plan: a distinct lateral line, a small adipose fin between the dorsal and caudal fins, and a relatively large eye for its head size.
Coloration is not well documented in the primary literature available, but Bryconamericus species generally display a silvery body with a darker midlateral stripe running from behind the operculum toward the caudal peduncle, and pale to transparent fins. Habitat

Like most small stream characids of the Guiana Shield, B. hyphesson likely inhabits clear to tea-stained, soft, acidic waters beneath closed forest canopy, where leaf litter and submerged debris provide cover. Water temperatures in Guianan lowland streams typically range through the mid-to-upper 20s Celsius. Its minute size would require careful attention to tankmate selection, avoiding anything large enough to prey on it. The primary identified threat in the assessment is mining and quarrying activity, which is an ongoing concern in the Guiana Shield region where artisanal and industrial gold mining can cause significant sedimentation, mercury contamination, and habitat destruction in stream systems. While the current status is reassuring, the restricted range means that any large-scale expansion of mining pressure in the Potaro basin could put the species at risk. Continued monitoring of Guianan stream habitats is warranted for range-restricted species such as this.
