Oligosarcus acutirostris is a slender, sharp-snouted predatory characid endemic to the Atlantic-draining coastal rivers of southeastern Brazil, from the Rio Itabapoana in Espírito Santo northward to the Rio Almada in Bahia. An ambush piscivore typical of the genus, it haunts well-oxygenated upland streams and lowland plains rivers in the Mata Atlântica foothills, one of the most species-rich and most threatened biodiversity hotspots on Earth. It was described by Naércio Aquino Menezes in the same monograph that redefined the entire genus, and it is assessed by the IUCN as Least Concern.

Taxonomy & naming

Oligosarcus acutirostris was described by the Brazilian ichthyologist Naércio Aquino Menezes in a monograph that also redefined the taxonomy of the genus as a whole and named two additional new species. The type locality is Rio Itapemirim at Fazenda Boa Esperança in Espírito Santo, with the holotype deposited at the Museu de Zoologia da Universidade de São Paulo (MZUSP 37525). Eschmeyer's Catalog of Fishes (CAS) is the authority for the valid name.

The genus Oligosarcus Günther, 1864 is a group of medium-sized to large predatory characids distributed across Atlantic and Paraná-draining river systems of eastern and southern South America. Molecular and morphological studies place Oligosarcus within the broader characid assemblage, though the precise familial limits around the group have been debated; for the purposes of this atlas the family is recorded as Characidae following the working classification in use at the time of description. The specific epithet acutirostris refers to the pointed snout that distinguishes this species from several of its congeners.

Morphology

Oligosarcus acutirostris is a fusiform, moderately compressed characid reaching up to 6.5 in standard length (SL). The body is elongate and streamlined, reflecting its active predatory lifestyle, with a notably pointed snout — the character that gives the species its name — and a large, terminal mouth equipped with strong, pointed teeth suited for gripping fish prey. The caudal fin is forked, the dorsal fin is positioned at mid-body, and an adipose fin is present, as in all characids.

Live coloration is not extensively documented in the literature, but members of the genus typically show a silvery body with a faint lateral stripe and darker dorsal pigmentation, the overall appearance blending into the dappled light of the stream habitats they occupy. Sexual dimorphism is not strongly documented for this species; as in many characids, ripe females may appear more rotund during the breeding season.

Habitat

The species is confined to the Northeastern Mata Atlântica ecoregion: the Atlantic-draining coastal rivers of southeastern Brazil between the Rio Itabapoana (Espírito Santo–Rio de Janeiro border) in the south and the Rio Almada in Bahia in the north. The type locality, Rio Itapemirim, is a mid-sized coastal river draining the eastern slope of the Serra do Espinhaço toward the Atlantic in Espírito Santo. This distribution encompasses parts of Bahia, Espírito Santo, and the eastern slopes of Minas Gerais.

Oligosarcus acutirostris occupies both lowland coastal plains rivers and upland headwater streams within this range. The genus as a whole favours clear, well-oxygenated lotic waters — the fast-flowing, gravel- or rock-bottomed runs and pools of Atlantic coastal drainages — and this species is consistent with that preference. The Mata Atlântica is a highly fragmented forest biome, and the fish fauna of its coastal rivers includes a high proportion of endemic species, many with naturally restricted ranges.

Feeding

Oligosarcus acutirostris is a piscivore, preying primarily on smaller fish. This is consistent with the feeding ecology documented across the genus: Oligosarcus species are regarded as among the dominant fish predators in their respective river systems, occupying a trophic role comparable to that of pike or perch in temperate waters. The pointed snout, large gape, and strong dentition are adaptations for seizing and manipulating elongate fish prey.

Diet composition likely shifts with body size and season, as documented in related congeners. Juveniles may supplement fish prey with aquatic invertebrates before transitioning to an almost exclusively piscivorous diet as adults. In clear upland streams, Oligosarcus species are often visual hunters, using current lines and structural cover to intercept prey.

Mating

No detailed reproductive studies specific to Oligosarcus acutirostris have been published in the accessible literature. Based on the reproductive biology of other Oligosarcus species and the general biology of predatory characids of similar size, the species is expected to be an egg-scattering open spawner. Courtship likely involves males pursuing ripe females in the water column, with spawning occurring over substrate or fine-leaved vegetation in stream reaches with moderate current.

As with most non-guarding characids, no parental care is expected following spawning. Adhesive eggs may settle among gravel, leaf litter, or plant material, where they incubate without attendance. The species presumably reproduces seasonally, with spawning cued by rising water levels and temperature fluctuations associated with the rainy season in the Mata Atlântica drainage.

Breeding

Oligosarcus acutirostris is not established in the ornamental aquarium hobby and there are no published accounts of captive breeding. Extrapolating from other Oligosarcus species kept by specialist fishkeepers, breeding would likely require a large aquarium or pond setting, soft to moderately hard acidic to neutral water mimicking its coastal stream habitat, and a conditioning diet of live or frozen fish.

If spawned, eggs would be expected to be non-adhesive or loosely adhesive, scattered among vegetation or over substrate, hatching within a few days at tropical temperatures. Adults would likely consume eggs and fry if not separated, consistent with the absence of parental care seen in the genus. Given the species' restricted range and specialist diet, captive breeding of this fish would represent a meaningful contribution to the understanding of the genus.

In the aquarium

Oligosarcus acutirostris is not a fish of the mainstream aquarium hobby and is rarely if ever available through commercial channels. Its size — up to 6.5 in SL — combined with its piscivorous habits and the absence of captive-bred supply make it unsuitable for community tanks. Specialist fishkeepers interested in predatory characids of the Atlantic Forest drainages may occasionally encounter the genus, but this particular species is essentially unknown outside ichthyological research settings.

For keepers who do work with Oligosarcus, the general requirements of the genus apply: a spacious aquarium with efficient filtration, well-oxygenated and clean water, and a diet of live or thawed fish or large invertebrates. The clear, flowing waters of its native habitat suggest a preference for moderate current and high dissolved oxygen. Mixing with smaller fish is not advisable. Data on long-term captive husbandry are sparse.

Conservation

Oligosarcus acutirostris is assessed as Least Concern (LC) on the IUCN Red List. The assessment reflects a species with a reasonably broad distribution across multiple river systems in the Northeastern Mata Atlântica — spanning Bahia, Espírito Santo, and eastern Minas Gerais — and no evidence of a decline severe enough to trigger a threatened category at the time of assessment.

That said, the Mata Atlântica is one of the most heavily deforested and fragmented biomes on Earth, with less than fifteen percent of its original forest cover remaining. The Atlantic-draining coastal rivers this species inhabits face ongoing pressures from deforestation, agricultural runoff, water abstraction, and urban expansion in what is one of Brazil's most densely populated regions. A Least Concern status does not mean pressures are absent; it means the species is currently assessed as not meeting the thresholds for a threatened listing. Continued monitoring of fish assemblages in the Mata Atlântica coastal rivers remains important for detecting any future decline.
