Oligosarcus brevioris was described by Naércio A. Menezes in 1987. The species belongs to the genus Oligosarcus Günther, 1864, a group of predatory characids distributed across river systems of southern and central South America. The valid name is recorded in Eschmeyer's Catalog of Fishes as Oligosarcus brevioris Menezes, 1987; because it was described in Oligosarcus, where it remains, no parenthetical authority is used. GBIF and FishBase both place the species in Characiformes: Characidae.
FishBase notes the subfamily placement as Stethaprioninae, though subfamily-level classification within the broad Characidae has been subject to ongoing revision. The genus Oligosarcus contains roughly a dozen described species that range from the Plata basin north through several Atlantic-slope drainages in Brazil, and O. brevioris is one of the species associated with the upper Uruguay system.
Morphology
Oligosarcus brevioris is a moderately large characid, with FishBase recording a maximum total length of 11 in and a maximum weight of 218 g. The body plan is typical of the genus: elongated and moderately compressed, with a pointed snout, large eyes, and well-developed jaw teeth adapted for seizing prey.
