Taxonomy & naming
Oligosarcus itau was described by Mirande, Aguilera & Azpelicueta in 2011, in a paper published in Zootaxa (issue 2994). The type locality is an unnamed stream on the road to Campo Largo, Departamento General San Martín, Salta Province, Argentina — a small tributary of the Río Itau, itself a tributary of the Río Bermejo basin. Eschmeyer's Catalog of Fishes treats Oligosarcus itau Mirande, Aguilera & Azpelicueta, 2011 as the valid name.
The species is placed in the genus Oligosarcus, a predatory clade of roughly 22 species currently assigned to the subfamily Stethaprioninae within the family Characidae, though the higher classification of this group continues to be refined. Oligosarcus species range across river systems of southeastern South America; O. itau occupies the northwestern edge of the genus's distribution in the Andean foothills of Argentina.
The specific epithet references the Río Itau, the river system near the type locality, following the Latinised form 'itau' as a geographic dedication. No common name in English or Spanish is established in the primary literature.
Morphology
The original description records specimens in the size range of 2 in standard length (SL) — a small fish even by the standards of a genus containing few large species. Diagnostic characters include two rows of teeth on the premaxilla, tricuspidate to pentacuspidate teeth, three to four teeth on the ectopterygoid, v–vi,21–23 anal-fin rays, and 41–42 scales along the lateral line.
Like other Oligosarcus, the body form is elongate and moderately compressed, suited to an ambush or pursuit predator lifestyle. The mouth is relatively large and well-toothed for the body size, reflecting the genus's piscivorous tendencies. Coloration in preserved material is not detailed in available sources; living colour pattern data are sparse for this species.
Habitat
The type locality is a small, unnamed tributary stream in the Andean piedmont of Salta Province, draining into the Río Itau and ultimately the Río Bermejo, which flows eastward to join the Río Paraguay. The region is characterised by seasonal, often swift tributary streams in the Chaco foothills, where water temperatures and chemistry can vary considerably with altitude and season.
A subsequent record documented the species from the San Francisco River basin in Jujuy Province — a neighbouring province to the north and also part of the broader Río Bermejo catchment — extending the known distribution beyond a single stream. No quantitative water-chemistry data (temperature range, pH) for the natural habitat of O. itau have been published in the accessible literature.
Feeding
Genus Oligosarcus are active predators, and O. itau is presumed to follow the same guild. Members of this genus typically prey on smaller fishes and large invertebrates; their multicuspidate dentition and two-rowed premaxillary teeth are consistent with a piscivorous or broadly carnivorous diet.
No direct dietary studies for O. itau are available in the published literature. Aquarists who have encountered Oligosarcus species generally report them as obligate or strongly preferential carnivores that require meaty foods and can be aggressive toward tankmates small enough to be viewed as prey.
Mating
No published observations on reproductive behaviour in O. itau exist in the accessible literature. Based on what is known of the genus and the broader characid family, Oligosarcus species are presumed to be egg-scatterers with no parental care — spawning freely in open water or over fine-leaved vegetation, depositing adhesive or semi-adhesive eggs, and abandoning the spawn immediately after fertilisation.
Triggers for spawning in wild populations of Andean piedmont streams likely include seasonal cues such as temperature change and rising water associated with the wet season, consistent with the reproductive strategies of other small to medium-sized characids in similar habitats.
Breeding
No captive breeding accounts for Oligosarcus itau are recorded in the hobby or scientific literature. As an Endangered species with a restricted range, it is not present in the ornamental trade and is unknown in private aquaria outside of any specialist research collections.
By analogy with related Oligosarcus species, breeding would likely follow the egg-scattering pattern typical of the family: adhesive eggs deposited among fine-leaved aquatic plants or substrate, no parental guarding, and larvae requiring small live foods at first feeding. These are inferences from family-level biology rather than species-specific observations.
In the aquarium
Oligosarcus itau is not an aquarium fish in any practical sense. It does not appear in the ornamental trade and its Endangered status, restricted range, and protected habitat make collection essentially impossible for hobbyists. No published husbandry guidelines exist for the species.
Aquarists interested in the broader genus Oligosarcus occasionally encounter other members of the group in specialist South American fish circles; those species have a reputation for aggression toward smaller tankmates and a preference for live or fresh-frozen meaty foods. Any care parameters specific to O. itau remain unknown.
Conservation
Oligosarcus itau is assessed as Endangered (EN) on the IUCN Red List (2022.2 assessment). The listing reflects its extremely restricted known range — initially a single tributary stream in Salta Province, now extended to include at least one site in Jujuy Province — and the inherent vulnerability of a species with such limited distribution to habitat modification, water extraction, and any degradation of the small piedmont stream systems it occupies.
The Río Bermejo basin faces pressures from agricultural expansion, irrigation water diversion, and deforestation in the Andean foothills, all of which can alter hydrology and water quality in the tributary streams that O. itau depends on. The discovery of a second population in the San Francisco River drainage in Jujuy is encouraging but does not fundamentally alter the species' precarious status: both sites lie within the same regional catchment and face broadly similar threats. No captive assurance population is known to exist.
