Oligosarcus bolivianus was described by Henry Weed Fowler in 1940 on the basis of specimens collected from what was then recorded as Bolivia — a provenance that gave the species its epithet. Subsequent taxonomic revision by Mirande and Koerber (2015) and Koerber (2022), documented in the Catalog of Fishes, corrected the type locality to the Río Lipeo approximately 1 mi upstream from its confluence with the Río Bermejo, Los Toldos municipality, Santa Victoria department, Salta Province, Argentina (approximately 22°26'50"S, 64°32'54"W). The holotype (ANSP 68814) and a series of paratypes (ANSP 68815–31, ANSP 79790) are deposited at the Academy of Natural Sciences in Philadelphia.
The genus Oligosarcus belongs to the large, heterogeneous family Characidae and encompasses roughly two dozen species of elongate, toothy, predatory characins distributed widely through South American river systems. These fishes are sometimes called 'pike characins' in hobbyist literature, though they are unrelated to the northern pike; they share with that fish a body plan suited to burst predation in flowing water. The valid name, as maintained in the Catalog of Fishes (Eschmeyer, CAS), is Oligosarcus bolivianus (Fowler, 1940), with the parenthetical authority reflecting the original placement in a different genus.
Morphology
Oligosarcus bolivianus is an elongate, fusiform characid reaching a maximum recorded size of 6 in standard length (FishBase), consistent with the genus's reputation as one of the larger predatory characins. The body is torpedo-shaped in lateral profile, with a pointed snout, a large mouth bearing well-developed teeth, and a build optimised for rapid acceleration in flowing water rather than sustained open-water swimming.
Like other members of Oligosarcus, the species carries the full complement of characiform features: a small adipose fin posterior to the dorsal, a forked caudal fin, and a lateral line running the length of the flank. Coloration, while not well documented in accessible literature, is typical of the genus: a silvery to pale brownish flank, often with a horizontal dark lateral stripe or band running from the snout toward the caudal peduncle, and a lighter belly. No commercially significant colour forms are known. Sexual dimorphism has not been characterized in published sources accessible from the cache, and precise meristic data for this species are sparse outside specialist systematic literature.
Habitat
The species is native to the Río Lipeo and the upper Río Bermejo drainage in the Andean foothills of northwestern Argentina, in the vicinity of the Argentina–Bolivia border. The Río Bermejo is a tributary of the Río Paraguay, placing Oligosarcus bolivianus within the broader La Plata basin. Occurrence records from GBIF link the species to the type locality and the Lipeo River drainage, consistent with a restricted Andean foothill distribution.
FishBase characterises the species as a freshwater, benthopelagic inhabitant with a preference for lotic (flowing) habitats with clear, well-oxygenated water — the kind of fast, clean montane river found throughout the Andean piedmont. Such rivers are typically cool relative to lowland Amazonian drainages, moderately soft to moderately hard depending on local geology, and subject to seasonal discharge fluctuations tied to Andean rainfall patterns. The genus as a whole is most species-rich in southern South America, and many Oligosarcus are closely associated with the current and riffles of clear-water foothill rivers.
Feeding
Oligosarcus is a piscivorous genus — the dentition, body shape, and large mouth are all adaptations for catching and swallowing fish. FishBase notes that members of this genus feed primarily on smaller fish, and O. bolivianus can be assumed to follow that pattern in the wild, supplementing with large invertebrates when fish prey is scarce. Males of Oligosarcus species are generally slimmer than females, with gravid females becoming noticeably fuller in the ventral profile prior to spawning. Courtship, where observed in related species, involves the male pursuing and displaying alongside the female before eggs and milt are released simultaneously among submerged vegetation or fine substrate. Breeding methodology must therefore be inferred from the genus and from related Andean Characidae. The eggs of Oligosarcus species are presumed to be non-adhesive to semi-adhesive and scattered among fine vegetation or substrate, consistent with the typical characid pattern; incubation period and fry size are undocumented for this species.
Breeders attempting the genus in captivity typically condition adults on a diet of live fish and large invertebrates, then simulate a seasonal trigger — modest temperature drop followed by a gradual rise, combined with increased water flow — to stimulate spawning readiness. Any eggs produced should be removed promptly, as the adults will consume them. In the aquarium
Oligosarcus bolivianus is not an established aquarium fish and is essentially absent from the hobby. Its predatory nature, relatively large adult size approaching 6 in SL, preference for fast, oxygenated water, and specialised piscivorous diet make it a challenging and specialist species even for experienced fishkeepers. It is unsuitable for community aquaria of any standard configuration — all smaller fish are potential prey — and would require a large, well-filtered tank with robust water movement and clean, well-oxygenated conditions reflecting its foothill-river origins.
For the rare specialist interested in Neotropical predatory characins, a species tank of sufficient volume (55 US gal or more for a small group), with strong filtration, good current, and a low stocking density of similarly sized or larger fish would be the appropriate approach. Tankmates, if any, should be robust species capable of holding their own with a piscivore. Given the scarcity of data and captive experience with this species, an interest in keeping it is best approached by first accumulating experience with more commonly kept Oligosarcus relatives.
Conservation
Oligosarcus bolivianus is assessed as Least Concern (LC) on the IUCN Red List (2022.2), with the population trend presumed stable. The LC designation reflects an absence of identified threats severe enough to trigger a higher category at the time of assessment, rather than a detailed population study — relatively few Neotropical characins receive the intensive survey effort that would reveal subtle declines.

The Andean foothills of Salta Province are subject to ongoing land-use change, and the montane rivers of the region are not exempt from broader pressures facing freshwater biodiversity in South America.
