Taxonomy & naming
Oligosarcus jacuiensis was described by Naércio Aquino Menezes and Alexandre Clistenes de Alcântara Ribeiro in 2010, in a paper published in Neotropical Ichthyology (volume 8, number 3). The type locality is recorded as Estrela Velha on the rio Jacuí, at approximately 29°15'46"S 53°14'05"W, in the state of Rio Grande do Sul, Brazil. Eschmeyer's Catalog of Fishes (Fricke, Eschmeyer & Fong) recognises the valid name as Oligosarcus jacuiensis Menezes & Ribeiro, 2010.
The genus Oligosarcus belongs to the family Characidae and comprises a group of elongate, partially piscivorous characins distributed through the major river basins of southern and central South America. Males of O. jacuiensis bear bilateral hooks on the anal and pelvic fins — a feature seen in many characid males and associated with spawning behaviour — which distinguishes them from females in the field.
Morphology
Oligosarcus jacuiensis is a moderately elongate characid with a somewhat fusiform body suited to an active, predatory lifestyle. FishBase records a maximum standard length of 8 in for females; the original description gives a size range of 3.5–8 in SL for females and 4–7.5 in SL for males, indicating that both sexes can approach 8 in, with some overlap between the sexes in total size.
The lateral line is complete and perforated, with 55 to 65 scales along its length, a meristic character that assists in distinguishing this species from congeners. Like other Oligosarcus, the species has a relatively large mouth equipped with well-developed teeth suited for seizing fish prey. Coloration in life is not detailed in the available sources, but the genus generally shows a silvery body with darker dorsal surfaces and a more or less distinct lateral stripe or band.
Habitat
The species is known from the Jacuí and Uruguay river basins of Rio Grande do Sul, in southern Brazil. These are the lowland and sub-montane river systems that drain the southern Brazilian highlands into the Patos-Mirim lagoon system and the Río de la Plata estuary respectively. The type locality on the rio Jacuí is a mid-sized subtropical river with seasonal temperature variation typical of the region.
FishBase classifies the species as freshwater and benthopelagic, indicating that it occupies the water column as well as areas near the bottom. The Jacuí and Uruguay basins experience a temperate to subtropical climate, with summer water temperatures reaching the low-to-mid 20s Celsius and winters considerably cooler — a regime markedly different from the tropical basins where most aquarium characins originate.
Feeding
Oligosarcus species are known as active predators that consume smaller fishes and large invertebrates. The elongate body form and the large, toothed mouth of O. jacuiensis are consistent with this guild. Juveniles likely consume invertebrates and small fish fry before transitioning to a more exclusively piscivorous diet as adults.
In an aquarium context, the species would be expected to take live or dead fish, large invertebrates, and meaty prepared foods. Its predatory disposition means it should not be housed with fish small enough to be treated as prey.
Mating
Detailed field observations of mating behaviour in Oligosarcus jacuiensis are not available in the published sources reviewed here. Like other characids, the genus is presumed to be an egg-scattering open spawner without parental care. Males bear bilateral hooks on the anal and pelvic fins, a secondary sexual character common to many characid species; these hooks are thought to function during spawning, possibly aiding in close contact between the pair during egg and sperm release.
Spawning in the wild likely corresponds to the warmer and higher-water months of the austral spring and summer in the Jacuí and Uruguay basins, as is typical for subtropical South American characins.
Breeding
No captive breeding reports for Oligosarcus jacuiensis were found in the sources available for this article. Based on the biology of the genus and family, the species is presumed to scatter adhesive or semi-adhesive eggs among fine-leaved vegetation or substrate, with no parental care provided after spawning. Eggs and fry would be at risk of predation by the adults themselves.
Given the species' subtropical origins, breeding attempts in captivity would likely require a seasonal temperature reduction to simulate the cooler winter period of its native range before raising temperatures to trigger spawning. Data on clutch size, incubation period, and fry development are not available in the reviewed sources.
In the aquarium
Oligosarcus jacuiensis is rarely encountered in the hobby and is not currently part of mainstream aquarium trade. Its size — potentially approaching 8 in SL — and predatory nature mean it requires a spacious aquarium and cannot be kept with smaller fish. A large, well-filtered tank with plenty of open swimming space would be necessary for adult specimens.
The species' subtropical origins are an important consideration: it comes from rivers that experience genuine seasonal cooling, and long-term maintenance at uniformly tropical temperatures may not suit it. Aquarists interested in keeping southern South American characins should be aware of the seasonal temperature cycle of the Jacuí and Uruguay drainages. As a relatively obscure species with no established hobby literature, husbandry parameters should be extrapolated cautiously from the natural history data available.
Conservation
Oligosarcus jacuiensis is assessed as Least Concern (LC) on the IUCN Red List, with the assessment dated November 2018. This reflects a distribution across two substantial river basins in southern Brazil — the Jacuí and Uruguay systems — and the absence of evidence of severe population decline or major range-wide threats at the time of assessment.
The Jacuí basin in Rio Grande do Sul has experienced hydroelectric development and agricultural land use over recent decades, which affects water quality and connectivity in parts of the system. However, these pressures are not considered sufficient to threaten the species across its full range at present. Ongoing monitoring of the river systems it inhabits remains important, as subtropical freshwater fish communities in southern Brazil face cumulative pressures from water regulation, sedimentation, and changes in land use.
