Taxonomy & naming
Oligosarcus longirostris was described by Naércio Aquino Menezes and Jacques Géry in 1983. The species belongs to the genus Oligosarcus Günther, 1864, a group of predatory characids ranging across much of temperate and subtropical South America east of the Andes. Eschmeyer's Catalog of Fishes treats Oligosarcus longirostris Menezes & Géry, 1983 as the valid name.
Phylogenetic analyses place O. longirostris as sister to a clade comprising O. paranensis, O. pintoi, and O. planaltinae from the Upper Paraná drainage. Its isolation in the Iguaçu basin appears to date from the Pliocene or Pleistocene, when river-capture events progressively separated the Iguaçu drainage from the broader Paraná system. The long, distinctive snout for which the species is named is a convergent adaptation for seizing evasive prey rather than a uniquely derived character within the genus.
Morphology
Oligosarcus longirostris is sexually dimorphic in size: males reach approximately 9 in standard length (SL), while females are substantially larger, attaining up to 11.5 in SL and a maximum recorded weight of around 267 g. The body is fusiform and moderately compressed, suited to life in fast-flowing water, with a large, oblique mouth and the elongated, somewhat projecting snout that gives the species its name.
Like other Oligosarcus, the species is silvery overall, with the typical characid lateral line and a blunt, rounded snout profile in juveniles that becomes more prominent in adults. The teeth are well-developed and multicuspid, consistent with a piscivorous diet. Fins are unremarkable for the genus; an adipose fin is present, as in all characiforms.
Habitat
The species is endemic to the Rio Iguaçu basin of southern Brazil (state of Paraná and adjacent areas) and extends into Argentina. The Iguaçu is a right-bank tributary of the Alto Paraná, famous for Iguaçu Falls, and its ichthyofauna is among the most endemic in South America due to the long isolation of the drainage above the falls.
Oligosarcus longirostris occupies lotic (flowing water) freshwater habitats within this basin. Microhabitat studies indicate a preference for deep backwaters and fast-flowing runs exceeding 20 ft depth and with current velocities above 3 ft/s, along with undercut banks and vegetated shorelines. These turbulent, oxygen-rich environments are characteristic of the larger rivers and their tributaries in the Iguaçu system.
Feeding
Oligosarcus longirostris is a dedicated piscivore. Studies of diet and trophic structure in subtropical South American systems document the species as feeding primarily on small fish, including tetras and other characids. In reservoir habitats, post-impoundment diet studies note a shift toward Astyanax sp. and Cyphocharax modestus as dominant prey, reflecting whatever small-bodied fish become locally abundant.
The elongated snout and large mouth equip it for pursuit predation, likely involving short bursts of acceleration toward prey. Its piscivory places it near the top of the local fish assemblage's trophic structure in rivers where it occurs. Data on invertebrate or plant material in the diet are sparse; the available evidence points strongly to fish as the primary food source throughout life, at least in adult fish.
Mating
Detailed mating observations for Oligosarcus longirostris are not documented in the available literature. Based on the biology of the genus and of open-water characids generally, spawning is presumed to follow the egg-scattering pattern typical of the Characidae, in which males pursue females and eggs and sperm are released into open water or over submerged vegetation.
No courtship specialisations or permanent pair bonds are known for Oligosarcus. Population structure studies on closely related congeners suggest sexually mature individuals aggregate in suitable habitat during the spawning season, with females producing substantially more biomass than males given their larger size. No parental care is expected.
Breeding
Breeding details specific to Oligosarcus longirostris are sparse in the available literature. As with the broader genus, this species is assumed to be a broadcast egg-scatterer with adhesive or semi-pelagic eggs released among fine-leaved aquatic plants or in open water, and with no parental care following spawning. The large adult female size suggests a potentially high absolute fecundity relative to smaller congeners.
The species has not been established in the ornamental trade and captive-breeding reports are essentially absent. Any attempt to breed it would require a large aquarium, appropriate water flow, and the ability to supply live fish as food throughout conditioning and rearing. Given its piscivorous nature, raising fry to a size where they will not be consumed by their parents or siblings would present significant practical challenges.

Oligosarcus longirostris is not a mainstream aquarium fish, and the combination of its adult size (up to ~12 in in females), piscivorous diet, and restricted distribution in a highly endemic drainage means it is essentially absent from the ornamental trade. It is primarily of interest to public aquaria and specialist ichthyology collections.
For a hypothetical specialist setup, a very large aquarium with robust filtration and high oxygen levels would be necessary to reflect the deep, fast-flowing river habitats the species inhabits in the Iguaçu basin. As an obligate piscivore, the fish would require a diet of live or frozen whole fish throughout its life; it cannot safely be housed with smaller tank-mates, which it would regard as prey. No care rating is assigned.
Conservation
Oligosarcus longirostris is assessed as Least Concern (LC) on the IUCN Red List, with the most recent assessment dating from 2020. The species is native to Argentina and Brazil. Despite its restricted range within the Iguaçu basin, its population is not currently considered to be at elevated risk of extinction under the IUCN criteria.
The principal long-term concern for the species is habitat alteration within the Iguaçu system. Hydroelectric development in Paraná state has substantially modified water flow, depth profiles, and sediment dynamics in parts of the basin, and reservoir creation changes microhabitat availability for a species that preferentially occupies deep, fast-flowing natural river runs. Its dependence on fish prey means it is also sensitive to any factor that reduces the abundance and diversity of small characids in the system. Continued monitoring is warranted given the endemic ichthyofauna of the Iguaçu drainage and the ongoing pace of hydraulic engineering in the region.
