Oligosarcus macrolepis was described by Franz Steindachner in 1877, making it one of the earlier members of the genus to receive a formal name. The genus Oligosarcus was erected by Albert Günther in 1864 for a group of predatory characids that range broadly across the river systems of southern and southeastern South America. Eschmeyer's Catalog of Fishes treats Oligosarcus macrolepis (Steindachner, 1877) as the valid name; the parenthetical authority reflects placement in a genus other than the one in which Steindachner originally described it.
Phylogenetic work on the genus (summarised in a 2019 molecular study) indicates that Oligosarcus comprises around 22 species distributed across southeastern South American drainages, with O. macrolepis representing one of the smaller-bodied forms. The genus belongs to the family Characidae in the order Characiformes; internal subfamily arrangements within Characidae have shifted repeatedly, but the genus and species themselves are not contested. O. macrolepis is distinct from its congeners by a combination of scale count, body proportions, and the notably large scales for which it is named.
Morphology
Oligosarcus macrolepis is a slender, fusiform fish reaching a maximum of around 3 in standard length, making it one of the smaller species in the genus. The body is elongated and laterally compressed, with a pointed snout, a wide gape, and jaws armed with sharp teeth — traits that immediately identify it as an active predator despite its modest size. The scales are conspicuously large relative to body size, a feature encoded directly in the specific epithet.
Coloration in life is typically silvery to pale yellowish on the flanks, with a diffuse dark lateral stripe that runs from behind the operculum toward the caudal peduncle. The dorsal surface is darker, providing countershading. The fins are generally hyaline to faintly pigmented. Habitat
Oligosarcus macrolepis is recorded from the Northeastern Mata Atlântica ecoregion of Brazil and from adjacent river systems in Argentina, Paraguay, Uruguay, and eastern Bolivia. It inhabits shallow streams, ponds, and the vegetated margins of rivers — the weedy, near-bank microhabitats that provide both cover for an ambushing predator and concentrations of the small fish it pursues.
The broad latitudinal spread of its range, spanning subtropical and warm-temperate South America, implies tolerance of seasonal temperature variation. Water conditions in these Mata Atlântica and La Plata basin tributaries tend toward warm, soft to moderately hard, and slightly acidic to neutral, though the species is not strongly restricted to a narrow chemical window across such a diverse range of drainages.
Feeding
Oligosarcus macrolepis is a piscivore; its primary diet consists of small fish. The elongated body, forward-facing jaws, and tooth armament are all consistent with a sit-and-pursue strategy in which the fish patrols or waits among marginal vegetation and darts at prey. This places it at or near the top of the invertebrate and small-vertebrate food web in the shallow-water habitats it frequents.
In captivity, the species can generally be trained onto meaty prepared foods — strips of fish flesh, earthworm, and similar items — though it will readily take live or frozen small fish and invertebrates. Conservation
Oligosarcus macrolepis is assessed as Least Concern on the IUCN Red List (2022.2 assessment). The broad distribution across multiple South American countries — Brazil, Argentina, Paraguay, Uruguay, and eastern Bolivia — gives the species a degree of resilience that localized threats do not overcome at the population level. The Mata Atlântica is one of the most heavily deforested biomes on earth, and stream habitats within it face ongoing pressures from agricultural runoff, riparian clearance, and water abstraction. These pressures affect the entire fish community of the region. However, without evidence of major range contraction or population decline, the species' wide distribution supports the Least Concern designation.
