Oligosarcus menezesi is a small predatory characid endemic to the upper Paraná drainage of Misiones Province, Argentina, where it inhabits the clear, fast-running tributaries of the Arroyo Urugua-í system. Described from a single river basin and known from no other watershed, it sits near the small end of a genus of dorado-like piscivores that are the apex consumers of their local streams. The IUCN assessed it as Near Threatened in 2020, reflecting the species' restricted range and the ongoing pressures on Atlantic Forest stream habitats in northeastern Argentina.

Taxonomy & naming

Oligosarcus menezesi was described by Adriana Miquelarena and Lucila Protogino in 1996, with the original description published in Iheringia, Série Zoologia, volume 80. The type locality is Arroyo Urugua-í in Misiones Province, within the upper Paraná basin of northeastern Argentina. The holotype is a female of 3.5 in standard length. Eschmeyer's Catalog of Fishes (Catalog of Fishes, CAS) records the valid name as Oligosarcus menezesi Miquelarena & Protogino, 1996.

The species belongs to Oligosarcus, a genus of small to medium-sized characid predators distributed widely across South American river systems east of the Andes. Oligosarcus species are sometimes called 'dogteeth tetras' in the hobby for their prominent canine-like dentition. Diagnostic characters for O. menezesi include a lateral line with 40–48 pored scales and an ectopterygoid bearing 4–10 teeth — a combination that separates it from the several congeners also present in the Paraná system. The species epithet honours the Brazilian ichthyologist Naércio Aquino Menezes of the Museu de Zoologia da Universidade de São Paulo, a major contributor to Neotropical ichthyology.

Morphology

Oligosarcus menezesi reaches a maximum recorded standard length of 5.5 in, placing it among the smaller members of the genus. Like all Oligosarcus it is a slender, fusiform fish built for pursuit: a slightly compressed body with a pointed snout, a large terminal mouth, and well-developed teeth on both jaws including enlarged canines. The lateral line runs from the shoulder to the base of the caudal fin and carries 40–48 pored scales in this species.

The ectopterygoid — a small bone on the outer palate — bears 4–10 teeth, a count that is a key meristic character separating O. menezesi from related species within the upper Paraná fauna. Coloration in life is not described in detail in available records; in life the genus typically shows a silvery-bronze lateral sheen, a dark lateral stripe, and a dark caudal spot, all common to Argentine stream characids. Males and females are externally similar in most members of the genus, though females of egg-bearing individuals are noticeably fuller-bodied.

Habitat

The species is known from the Arroyo Urugua-í and associated tributaries in Misiones Province, within the upper Paraná river basin of northeastern Argentina. This region lies within the Atlantic Forest biome, a globally threatened tropical and subtropical forest that once covered a broad arc along the eastern coast of South America but now survives largely as fragments. The streams of Misiones are typically clear, cool to warm temperate, and fast-flowing over rocky or gravelly substrates, running through gallery forest that provides substantial riparian shade and leaf-litter input.

FishBase classifies O. menezesi as a freshwater benthopelagic species with a temperate climate affinity, consistent with the cooler highland tributaries of the upper Paraná. The combination of a restricted drainage, highly fragmented surrounding forest, and ongoing agricultural and hydroelectric development in Misiones underpins the IUCN Near Threatened assessment.

Feeding

Oligosarcus menezesi is a carnivore with a FishBase-recorded trophic level of 3.9 (±0.7), placing it as an intermediate-level predator — above the level typical of invertebrate-feeders and approaching the range of active piscivores. The genus as a whole is well known for predatory habits; larger species are confirmed fish-eaters, and even smaller members like O. menezesi likely consume invertebrates and small fish in proportion to their own size.

In Arroyo Urugua-í tributaries, the diet would be expected to include aquatic insects and their larvae, small crustaceans, and opportunistic predation on smaller fish. The species' robust dentition, including ectopterygoid teeth, supports a diet that goes beyond soft-bodied invertebrates. No detailed stomach-content study for this species appears in available records.

Mating

No published data on the specific mating behaviour of Oligosarcus menezesi are available in the accessible literature. Based on the reproductive biology of Oligosarcus as a genus and of comparable small characids from the upper Paraná basin, the species is almost certainly an open-water egg-scatterer that spawns in the water column or over gravel and submerged vegetation with no parental care. Spawning in Argentine Oligosarcus species is generally associated with the warmer months when stream temperatures rise, corresponding to the austral spring and summer.

Males in breeding condition likely show minor secondary characters — slightly slimmer build, possibly small hooks on the anal-fin rays as documented in some congeners — but specific descriptions for O. menezesi are absent from available records.

Breeding

Oligosarcus menezesi has not been documented in aquarium breeding in available records, and there are no captive-husbandry accounts for the species accessible from this source set. In the wild, reproduction presumably follows the seasonal pattern of upper Paraná stream characids: spawning peaks in the warmer, higher-water months (October–February in Misiones), with adhesive or semi-adhesive eggs deposited in the current or over substratum vegetation and no parental guarding.

FishBase rates the species' population resilience as high, with a projected population doubling time of fewer than 15 months — a figure consistent with a small, short-lived characid that reaches reproductive maturity relatively quickly and produces multiple cohorts per year under favourable conditions.

In the aquarium

Oligosarcus menezesi is not an established aquarium fish, and there are no commercial sources or husbandry guides in the accessible record. The genus Oligosarcus is rarely offered in the trade; the species are primarily of interest to ichthyologists and to specialist collectors of South American stream fishes. Were it to be kept, the baseline requirements would follow those of other small Argentine stream characids: cool to moderate water temperatures consistent with a temperate Misiones stream environment, good current and oxygenation, a spacious tank with open swimming room, and a carnivorous diet of live or frozen invertebrates and, in larger specimens, small feeder fish.

Given the species' restricted wild range and NT conservation status, collection from the wild would be inadvisable, and there is no captive-bred supply. Aquarists interested in the genus are better served by more widely available congeners with established husbandry records.

Conservation

The IUCN Red List assessed Oligosarcus menezesi as Near Threatened (NT) in November 2020. The species qualifies for this status on the basis of its restricted range — a single river drainage in Misiones Province — and the ongoing degradation of Atlantic Forest stream habitats in that region. The upper Paraná basin in Misiones has been heavily affected by hydroelectric development, agricultural conversion (particularly soybean and yerba maté), and deforestation, all of which alter stream hydrology, increase sedimentation, and degrade the clear, forested watercourses the species depends on.

FishBase records a low fishing vulnerability score (10 out of 100), suggesting the species is not a significant target of directed fishing pressure. The primary conservation concern is habitat loss rather than exploitation. Because the species is endemic to a single drainage and has no known additional populations, any localised event — a toxic spill, a dam that interrupts connectivity, or the clearance of the last riparian buffer — could have disproportionate consequences for the global population.
