Oligosarcus oligolepis was described by Franz Steindachner in 1867; the parenthetical authority reflects its transfer from the original genus in which Steindachner placed it. Eschmeyer's Catalog of Fishes (Fricke, Eschmeyer & Fong) is the governing authority for the valid name. The genus Oligosarcus belongs to the family Characidae and has been placed within the subfamily Stethaprioninae in recent classifications, though the higher-level arrangement of characid subfamilies remains actively debated.
The genus name Oligosarcus combines the Greek oligos (few, small) and sarkos (flesh), historically interpreted as referring to the relatively small, widely-spaced scales — a character reflected in the specific epithet as well: oligolepis is formed from oligos and lepis (scale), meaning 'few-scaled' or 'small-scaled.' The species thus carries the same anatomical reference in both its generic and specific names, pointing to the notably large scale size relative to body length that distinguishes this group from many other characins.
Morphology

Oligosarcus oligolepis is an uncommon aquarium fish, kept mainly by specialists in large South American predators. Its eventual size — over 10 in — and its carnivorous, fish-hunting nature mean it is unsuitable for community aquaria with smaller species. A large, well-filtered aquarium is essential; the species is an active swimmer and produces significant waste as a dedicated carnivore.
Tankmates must be chosen carefully. Because it will consume any fish it can fit in its mouth, companions need to be of equal or greater size and should not be aggressive enough to damage the oligosarcus. Large peaceful species — other robust South American characins, large peaceful cichlids, or similarly-sized catfish — may be workable, but observation is required. The diet in captivity should consist of meaty foods: whole feeder shrimp, appropriately sized whole fish, strips of fresh fish or prawn, and large carnivore pellets. It is not a beginner's fish, but for the experienced keeper of large neotropical oddities it offers an interesting window into the predator ecology of the pampas river system.
