Taxonomy & naming
Oligosarcus perdido was described by Ribeiro, Cavallaro & Froehlich in 2007 in the journal Zootaxa (volume 1560, issue 1, pages 43–53). The type locality is the Rio Perdido, a tributary of the Rio Apa in the upper Rio Paraguai basin, within the Serra da Bodoquena (Bodoquena Ridge) karst system of Mato Grosso do Sul state, Brazil. Eschmeyer's Catalog of Fishes is the authority for the valid name; the species remains placed in Oligosarcus, where it was originally described.
Oligosarcus is a South American genus of small to medium-sized predatory characids in the family Characidae. Members of the genus are active pursuit predators distinguishable from allied genera by a combination of dentition, meristics, and body form. O. perdido is set apart within the genus by a diagnostic meristic suite: 61–63 scales along the lateral line and 15–20 scales encircling the caudal peduncle, figures that do not overlap with close relatives described from neighboring drainages.
Morphology
Oligosarcus perdido reaches a maximum standard length of 4 in, making it a small member of the genus. Like other Oligosarcus it is a slender, fusiform fish built for active pursuit, with a relatively large mouth armed with the conical teeth typical of piscivorous and invertivore-predatory characids.
The species is distinguished from congeners primarily by scale counts rather than by striking colour: 61–63 lateral-line scales and 15–20 caudal-peduncle scales are the key diagnostic characters cited in the original description. Body coloration in life has not been described in detail in publicly available sources; preserved specimens show the typical pale to silvery background with darker dorsal pigmentation common across small Oligosarcus. Data on live coloration remain sparse given the species' rarity in collections.
Habitat
The Rio Perdido drains a karstic landscape within the Serra da Bodoquena, a limestone ridge forming the southern boundary of the Brazilian Pantanal in Mato Grosso do Sul state. The river is characterized by calcareous tufa deposits and extensive karst features, giving the water a whitish cast from suspended calcareous clay. Waterfalls of 3–20 ft interrupt the channel at intervals, and deep pools reaching 39 ft have been documented — an extraordinary depth for a small river.
Flow in the Rio Perdido is generally slow to moderate, and the substrate is pale calcareous clay over limestone bedrock. This combination of deep pools, clear-to-turbid alkaline water, and karst geology is distinct from the typical Pantanal lowland streams and almost certainly structures the fish community, offering both refuge in deep water and productive shallow-water foraging zones around the falls. The Rio Perdido enters the Rio Apa, itself a tributary of the upper Rio Paraguai.
The Serra da Bodoquena is also a protected area (Parque Nacional da Serra da Bodoquena, created 2000), and the Rio Perdido system falls within or adjacent to this unit, providing some degree of formal habitat protection.
Feeding
Oligosarcus species are generalist predators that feed primarily on small fishes, aquatic invertebrates, and insects. The genus is noted for relatively large, conical teeth and active, pursuit-oriented hunting behavior, quite different from the filter-feeding or algae-grazing habits of many other small characids.
No detailed dietary study has been published specifically for O. perdido, and data from its restricted type locality are sparse. By analogy with congeners from adjacent Paraguai basin drainages, the species likely takes small fish, larval insects, and crustaceans, with the deep pools of the Rio Perdido potentially affording ambush opportunities not available in shallower karstic streams.
Mating
No published observations of mating behavior in Oligosarcus perdido are available. Oligosarcus species are egg-scattering open spawners in the characid tradition, releasing adhesive or semi-adhesive eggs among fine-leaved aquatic vegetation or over submerged substrates with no parental care. Spawning in the genus is generally seasonal, likely triggered by temperature and hydrological cues associated with the Brazilian wet season.
The karstic Rio Perdido experiences relatively stable base flow due to its groundwater-fed nature, which may moderate the seasonal flooding cues that drive spawning in floodplain-connected Pantanal species. Whether this results in a compressed or extended spawning season in O. perdido is unknown; field data from the type locality are limited to the original collection and subsequent taxonomic visits.
Breeding
Oligosarcus perdido has not been maintained or bred in the aquarium hobby to any documented extent, and no captive breeding accounts have been published. The genus Oligosarcus is rarely encountered in the trade; most species are scientifically collected rather than commercially exported, and O. perdido's narrow endemic range means it is essentially unknown outside specialist scientific collections.
Based on the general biology of Oligosarcus, breeding would be expected to follow the characid egg-scattering pattern: adhesive eggs deposited among vegetation, no parental care, and larvae that become free-swimming within a few days. The alkaline, hard, cool-to-moderate-temperature conditions of the Rio Perdido (reflecting its karstic source) would presumably be important parameters for any captive breeding attempt, but no practical data exist.
In the aquarium
Oligosarcus perdido is not an aquarium fish in any practical sense. It is a geographically restricted, recently described species from a remote karstic river system, and it does not appear in the hobby trade. No husbandry information has been published.
As a predatory characid, any individual kept by specialists would require a spacious tank with clean, well-oxygenated water reflecting the cool, alkaline, mineral-rich conditions of its Rio Perdido type locality. The species' small size (under 4 in SL) would make it manageable, but its predatory dentition means it should be housed only with fish of similar or larger size. The conservation sensitivity of an underevaluated narrow endemic argues strongly against collection for the hobby.
Conservation
Oligosarcus perdido has not been formally assessed by the IUCN Red List as of the date of this article. Its Data Deficient status reflects both the recency of its description (2007) and the very limited information available on its population size, precise range boundaries, and vulnerability to habitat change.
The species is known only from the Rio Perdido within the Serra da Bodoquena karst system — one of the smallest ranges of any Oligosarcus. The Rio Perdido's karstic hydrology, while offering some stability, also renders it sensitive to changes in land use, groundwater extraction, and contamination within the limestone catchment. The Serra da Bodoquena national park provides partial protection, but the park's boundaries and enforcement capacity relative to the full extent of the Rio Perdido watershed are not well documented in the public literature. Until a formal IUCN assessment is conducted, the precautionary inference from such a narrow endemic range is that habitat integrity is critical to the species' persistence.
