The type locality is in the Planalto region of central Brazil — the name planaltinae is a direct reference to this origin, being the Latinised form of the Portuguese planalto (high plain, plateau). The Catalog of Fishes (Eschmeyer, CAS) records the valid name as Oligosarcus planaltinae Menezes & Géry, 1983, with no parenthetical authority, indicating the species was described in Oligosarcus and has not been transferred.
Oligosarcus is a South American genus of small to medium-sized piscivorous characins traditionally placed in the family Characidae. The genus is distributed broadly across river systems of eastern, central, and southern South America, with a centre of diversity in the La Plata basin; the species described from the Brazilian Planalto represent a more northerly element of the group, extending into the São Francisco and Paraná headwater drainages where highland topography generates the clear, well-oxygenated streams the genus favours. O. planaltinae belongs to a cluster of Oligosarcus species restricted to upland headwaters, distinguished from one another by tooth counts, body proportions, and pigmentation patterns.
Morphology
Oligosarcus planaltinae is a streamlined, moderately compressed characin with the elongate, low-bodied silhouette typical of the genus. In the aquarium
Oligosarcus planaltinae is extremely rare in the international aquarium trade; most specimens reaching hobbyists are wild-caught from the Brazilian Planalto and occasionally appear in specialist South American fish circles or via direct import. The species demands the same respect for its predatory nature as other Oligosarcus: it should not be housed with fish small enough to be eaten, and it requires a well-covered aquarium of adequate length — a minimum of around 47 in for smaller individuals, larger for adults — with efficient filtration and regular water changes.
Water conditions reflecting the Cerrado highland streams are appropriate: slightly soft to moderately hard, neutral to mildly acidic water at temperatures in the range of 68–81 °F, with good oxygenation and moderate flow. The tank should include structure — driftwood, root masses, or large smooth stones — to provide cover and break up sightlines. Tankmates, if any, should be robust fish of similar or greater body size. The Cerrado is one of the world's most biodiverse and most threatened savannas. Agricultural conversion — particularly to soybean and cattle pasture — has destroyed or degraded vast areas of Cerrado vegetation, with direct consequences for the headwater streams that Oligosarcus planaltinae and many other endemic species depend on. Removal of riparian gallery forest destabilises stream banks, increases siltation, and raises water temperatures; dam and irrigation infrastructure alters hydrology across entire sub-basins. For a species that appears to be confined to highland Planalto drainages, any range restriction compounds vulnerability: there is less geographic buffer against local extirpations.
