Oligosarcus platensis is a slender-bodied predatory characid from the La Plata River basin of South America, originally described from arroyo Tropa Vieja in Canelones, Uruguay. Known only from a restricted range in the lower drainage, it is one of roughly twenty-two recognised species in the genus Oligosarcus — a group of swift, piscivorous hunters that occupy rivers, streams, and reservoirs across subtropical southeastern South America. Its original combination was Astyanacinus platensis; the species was reassigned to Oligosarcus by Mirande and colleagues in 2011.

Taxonomy & naming

Oligosarcus platensis was originally described as Astyanacinus platensis by Messner in 1962, with the holotype (MHNM 762, 4 in SL) collected from arroyo Tropa Vieja, Canelones, Uruguay, in the La Plata River basin. The species was subsequently moved to the genus Oligosarcus by Mirande, Aguilera, and Azpelicueta in 2011, following a molecular and morphological re-evaluation of characid relationships.

The genus Oligosarcus was erected by Günther in 1864 and accommodates around twenty-two species distributed across drainages of southeastern South America south of roughly 14° S. Within this assemblage, O. platensis is distinguished by characters of the dentition: the premaxillary outer tooth row carries tricuspidate teeth, and the premaxilla bears two rows of teeth — a condition not shared by most congeners, which have a single premaxillary tooth row.

Eschmeyer's Catalog of Fishes recognises Oligosarcus platensis (Messner, 1962) as the valid name; the parenthetical authority reflects the species' transfer from its original genus.

Morphology

Oligosarcus platensis is a moderately elongate, fusiform characid built for an active, predatory lifestyle. The holotype measured 4 in standard length, and the genus as a whole spans roughly 2.5–12 in SL across species, with most attaining sizes typical of mid-sized stream predators.

Like other Oligosarcus, O. platensis has a distinctly toothed, protractile mouth oriented toward prey capture, with the dentition described above — tricuspidate outer premaxillary teeth and two rows on the premaxilla — serving as diagnostic features. The body is covered in moderately large cycloid scales, and the general colouration of the genus tends toward silvery flanks with a dark lateral stripe or midlateral band running from the operculum toward the caudal peduncle, though specific pigmentation details for O. platensis are not well documented in the available literature.

Data on the precise maximum size of O. platensis specifically are sparse; published accounts for the genus suggest the species reaches sizes in the range of other small to mid-sized Oligosarcus.

Habitat

The type locality of Oligosarcus platensis is arroyo Tropa Vieja, a small stream in Canelones department, Uruguay, within the La Plata River basin. The La Plata system is the second-largest river drainage in South America, encompassing a broad subtropical lowland zone with a range of habitat types from large mainstem rivers to small coastal streams and man-made reservoirs.

Related Oligosarcus species across the genus occupy a variety of substrates — sand, gravel, and clay — in both lotic and lentic systems, including oligotrophic reservoirs. The typical habitat is well-oxygenated, flowing or still clear water with open mid-water zones suited to an active predator. Water temperatures in the subtropical La Plata drainage vary seasonally, dropping to cool conditions in austral winter and warming through summer.

The known distribution of O. platensis appears to be restricted, and the species is reported as very rare even at its type locality, which limits what can be said with confidence about its broader ecological range.

Feeding

Oligosarcus species are among the most distinctly piscivorous of the smaller South American characids. Related congeners such as O. paranensis exhibit a clear ontogenetic dietary shift: juveniles feed primarily on aquatic invertebrates, then switch to a diet dominated by small fishes — characids, cichlids, and other co-occurring species — as adults. This shift is typical of the genus and almost certainly applies to O. platensis as well, given shared morphology and ecology.

The dentition of Oligosarcus is adapted for seizing and holding fish prey: the large, multicuspidate teeth provide grip on slippery prey, and the protruding lower jaw and fusiform body form support rapid, pursuit-based strikes. In the wild the genus is an important component of predator–prey dynamics in subtropical river systems.

Mating

No specific reproductive behaviour has been documented for Oligosarcus platensis in the scientific literature. Based on the biology of the genus and the broader Characidae, the species is expected to be an egg-scatterer with no parental care, spawning in open water or among fine-leaved aquatic vegetation.

Congeners in comparable ecological settings are seasonal spawners, with reproductive activity typically tied to water temperature rises in spring and early summer in the subtropical La Plata basin. Males in Oligosarcus species may show minor tubercle development during the breeding season, and as in most characids, females are typically distinguishable from males by a fuller abdomen when ripe.

Breeding

Detailed breeding observations for Oligosarcus platensis are absent from the available literature, and the species has not been reported in the aquarium hobby in any numbers. Based on close relatives, the reproductive strategy is egg-scattering with adhesive or semi-adhesive eggs deposited among vegetation or over substrate, followed by no parental investment. The adults would be expected to consume eggs if left in the spawning tank.

Incubation times for related species in subtropical temperatures are typically a few days, with small, free-swimming larvae requiring fine live foods initially. The species' rarity and restricted distribution mean that breeding in captivity remains undocumented.

In the aquarium

Oligosarcus platensis is effectively unknown in the aquarium hobby. Its restricted range, apparent rarity, and the absence of any commercial collection at scale mean it is not available in the trade and has not been kept or bred in captivity to any documented extent.

The genus Oligosarcus as a whole presents challenges for community keeping: these are active, predatory fishes that will readily consume smaller tankmates, and they require spacious aquaria with strong filtration and significant swimming room. Water parameters should reflect the species' subtropical origin — cooler than most tropical community fish, with seasonal temperature variation ideally replicated. Any future captive work would likely follow the same lines as other piscivorous characids: species tanks or carefully chosen tankmates of similar size, with a diet of appropriately sized live or frozen fish and invertebrates.

Conservation

Oligosarcus platensis has not received a formal assessment from the IUCN Red List; its conservation status is Not Evaluated (NE). This reflects the limited documentation of the species rather than an absence of potential concern — the known range is restricted to a small stream system in Canelones, Uruguay, and the species is reported as very rare even at its type locality.

The La Plata basin faces broad pressures including agricultural runoff, flow modification, introduced species, and urban development, all of which affect small stream systems within the catchment. Given its narrow known distribution and apparent scarcity, O. platensis may merit formal evaluation. Targeted field surveys to confirm current presence at the type locality and to identify any additional populations would be a necessary first step toward a meaningful threat assessment.
