Oligosarcus schindleri is a small, carnivorous characid confined to a cluster of high-altitude Andean lagoons near Cochabamba, Bolivia — among the most elevation-restricted tetras in South America. Described from material collected during Otto Schindler's 1953–1954 Bolivian expedition, it inhabits headwater streams and shallow lagoons at roughly 2,1831 ft above sea level, where eutrophication, water pollution, and altered hydrology have driven the IUCN to assess it as Endangered.

Taxonomy & naming

Oligosarcus schindleri was described by Naércio Aquino Menezes and Jacques Géry in 1983, with the type locality given as a tributary near San Francisco de Chipiriri, Bolivia, in the Chapare River drainage. The type material originated from field collections made during Otto Schindler's 1953–1954 Bolivian expedition. Eschmeyer's Catalog of Fishes (Catalog of Fishes) records the valid name as Oligosarcus schindleri Menezes & Géry, 1983; the species has not been reassigned to another genus and its placement in the Characidae is current.

Oligosarcus Günther, 1864 is a genus of predatory characids distributed across temperate and subtropical river systems of South America, particularly in the La Plata and adjacent Andean drainages. Phylogenetic studies of the genus place O. schindleri among the higher-altitude Bolivian species, distinguished from relatives by a combination of meristic characters including body proportions and fin-ray counts. Its Andean lagoon habitat is unusual within a genus whose members more often occupy main-channel rivers and large floodplain systems.

Morphology

Oligosarcus schindleri is a slender, fusiform characid reaching approximately 3 in standard length in males and 3 in SL in females — compact compared with many congeners. The body is laterally compressed, with the classic Oligosarcus profile: a pointed snout, a terminal mouth bearing well-developed teeth, and a relatively large eye. The adipose fin is present, as in all Oligosarcus. Coloration in life is subdued silvery, typical of the genus, with a lateral dark stripe running the length of the flank; the fins are largely hyaline.

Sexual size dimorphism is notable, with males exceeding females by nearly a centimetre in standard length. Beyond size, external differences between the sexes are subtle in this species, as is common across Oligosarcus; males may develop a slightly more angular abdomen during the breeding season, but the species lacks the flamboyant secondary sexual characters seen in many other characid groups.

Habitat

This species is a high-altitude Andean endemic, known from the Chapare River basin and from lagoons near Cochabamba — principally Laguna Alalay and Laguna Vacas — at an elevation of approximately 2,1831 ft. The habitat consists of shallow lagoons and headwater stream reaches, typically with still or slow-flowing water, reduced oxygen compared with lowland rivers, and substrates of soft sediment and aquatic macrophytes.

The Cochabamba lagoons lie within an agricultural and increasingly urbanised landscape, which has fundamentally altered water quality. Laguna Alalay, the best-documented locality, has been subject to chronic eutrophication from urban sewage and agricultural runoff. A mass die-off of fish was recorded in 2016 following a hypereutrophication event in that lagoon, illustrating how immediately degraded water quality translates into population loss for a species with nowhere else to go. The combination of small total range and severely degraded habitat gives O. schindleri one of the most precarious situations of any South American tetra.

Feeding

Like other Oligosarcus, O. schindleri is a predatory species. The genus is characterised by robust dentition and an active pursuit-predator lifestyle, targeting smaller fishes and invertebrates. In the Cochabamba lagoons, the available prey community at high altitude would be dominated by small invertebrates, aquatic insects, and whatever small fish co-occur in the impoverished Andean fauna.

In captivity, the species can be expected to accept live and frozen prey items — small live fish, invertebrates, and large frozen foods such as bloodworm or krill. As a toothy predator, it should not be housed with fish small enough to be regarded as prey, and feeding its carnivorous requirements is a central consideration in any captive management context.

Mating

No detailed courtship observations for Oligosarcus schindleri have been published, and the species is not kept or bred in the aquarium hobby in any numbers that would generate husbandry literature. Based on the biology of congeners, O. schindleri is presumed to be an egg-scattering open spawner without parental care, releasing adhesive eggs among submerged vegetation or over substrate in shallow water. Male competition, involving chasing and display, is typical of Oligosarcus before spawning.

The timing of spawning in the wild is likely tied to the Andean wet season, when water temperatures and oxygen levels shift and food availability increases, following the pattern seen in other Bolivian characids. Whether the Cochabamba lagoon populations retain normal reproductive cycles given the ongoing eutrophication stress is not documented.

Breeding

Oligosarcus schindleri is not established in the aquarium hobby and has not been bred in captivity under documented conditions. Extrapolating from Oligosarcus biology, reproduction would involve egg scattering over fine-leaved vegetation or open substrate, with adhesive eggs and no parental investment. Adults would eat eggs and fry, requiring separation if captive breeding were attempted.

Given the species' Endangered status and restricted range, ex-situ breeding efforts by conservation institutions would be valuable, but no such programme is currently documented in the literature. The challenges of replicating high-altitude soft-sediment lagoon conditions — including the cool temperatures and reduced oxygen characteristic of 2,1831 ft Andean water — would need to be met before reliable captive breeding could be achieved.

In the aquarium

Oligosarcus schindleri is effectively absent from the ornamental fish trade and is not a commercially available species. It is a small predator requiring cool, well-oxygenated water consistent with its high-altitude origin — temperatures appropriate for Andean headwater lagoons are considerably lower than those used for most tropical tetras, and its husbandry would require specialist conditions.

If ever maintained in captivity outside a conservation context, it would need to be kept with fish of similar or larger size to prevent predation, provided ample swimming space, and fed a varied carnivorous diet. Its Endangered status, restricted wild range, and absence from established breeding programmes make it a species best regarded as a subject of conservation concern rather than aquarium keeping. Any acquisition of wild specimens would be ethically problematic given the small and declining wild population.

Conservation

Oligosarcus schindleri is assessed as Endangered (EN) on the IUCN Red List under criteria B1ab(iii,v), reflecting a restricted extent of occurrence combined with continuing decline in habitat quality and population size. The primary threats are water pollution from urban and agricultural sources, altered hydrological discharge, and habitat fragmentation within the Chapare River basin and Cochabamba lagoon system.

The 2016 mass die-off at Laguna Alalay — caused by acute hypereutrophication — demonstrated that the species is capable of experiencing catastrophic local mortality events, and underscored the fragility of a fish confined to a handful of heavily impacted waterbodies in a rapidly urbanising Bolivian valley. No protected-area coverage meaningfully encompasses the core habitat, and no ex-situ conservation programme has been publicly documented. Restoration of water quality in the Cochabamba lagoons, particularly reduction of nutrient loading from sewage and agriculture, is the most direct conservation measure available for the species.
