Oligosarcus varii is a mid-sized piscivorous characid described in 2015 from the Rio Jacuí basin of Rio Grande do Sul, Brazil. A member of the lowland species group within Oligosarcus, it inhabits the shallow, vegetated margins of subtropical Atlantic Forest streams and was formally distinguished from its close relative Oligosarcus jenynsii by a wider interorbital width and shorter pectoral fins, among other characters. The species is named in honour of the American ichthyologist Richard P. Vari. As a regional endemic confined to a single river basin in southern Brazil, it has not yet been formally assessed by the IUCN.

Taxonomy & naming

Oligosarcus varii was described by Naércio A. Menezes and Marcelo F. Ribeiro in 2015 in the journal Neotropical Ichthyology (volume 13, issue 3, pages 541–546). The holotype, MCP 31148, is a female measuring 7 in standard length, collected from São Marcos in the Rio Jacuí basin, Rio Grande do Sul state, Brazil. Catalog of Fishes records the valid name as Oligosarcus varii Menezes & Ribeiro, 2015.

The species belongs to the lowland species group of Oligosarcus, a South American genus of predatory characids whose members occupy river basins from the La Plata system northward through Atlantic Forest drainages. O. varii is most morphologically similar to O. jenynsii and to O. jacuiensis, from which it is distinguished by a wider interorbital distance, a shorter pectoral fin, and a suite of meristic and proportional differences. The original description places particular emphasis on the interorbital and pectoral characters as reliable field diagnostics.

The specific epithet varii honours Richard P. Vari (1949–2016), ichthyologist at the Smithsonian Institution and a leading authority on South American freshwater fishes, whose extensive taxonomic contributions to Neotropical characoids underpin much of current family-level systematics in the group.

Morphology

Oligosarcus varii is a moderately elongate, fusiform characid with a terminal mouth armed with sharp, conical teeth — the predatory dentition typical of the genus. The holotype female reaches 7 in standard length; FishBase records a maximum of 8 in SL for the species.

Among the morphological features that distinguish O. varii from related lowland Oligosarcus, the original description highlights a relatively wider interorbital distance and a proportionally shorter pectoral fin compared to O. jenynsii. As in other Oligosarcus species, the body is laterally compressed, the snout is pointed, and the eye is of moderate size. Colouration in life is not fully detailed in available sources, but members of this species group typically show a silvery-grey body, often with a faint lateral stripe, and translucent to slightly pigmented fins. Precise scalation and fin-ray counts were recorded in the original description but are not reproduced here.

Habitat

Oligosarcus varii is endemic to the Rio Jacuí basin in Rio Grande do Sul, the southernmost state of Brazil. The Jacuí system drains a large portion of the state's interior before emptying into the Lagoa dos Patos — one of the largest coastal lagoon systems in South America — making it one of the major river basins of the Atlantic Forest zone in the far south of the continent.

FishBase categorises O. varii as a benthopelagic subtropical freshwater fish, consistent with the habitat use documented for other lowland Oligosarcus: shallow rivers and streams, pond margins, and vegetated banks with sand or gravel substrates and the leaf-litter accumulations characteristic of Atlantic Forest waterways. The subtropical climate of Rio Grande do Sul means water temperatures in the Jacuí system cycle seasonally — warm in summer and notably cool in winter — conditions that distinguish this fauna from the more stable tropical systems to the north.

Feeding

Oligosarcus varii is piscivorous, as is the pattern for the genus. Members of this genus are active pursuit predators whose large terminal mouths and well-developed dentition allow them to take prey fish approaching their own body size. In the Rio Jacuí system, available prey consists largely of small characids and other co-occurring small-bodied fishes of the Atlantic Forest drainage fauna.

As with other lowland Oligosarcus species, juveniles likely begin as invertebrate-feeders before shifting to fish prey as they grow and the gape widens. This ontogenetic dietary shift is well documented in closely related species of the genus. In the aquarium, established adults will readily accept whole feeder fish or large meaty foods, though weaning onto non-live alternatives such as large pellets or meaty frozen foods is preferable for long-term maintenance.

Mating

No specific information on the reproductive behaviour of Oligosarcus varii in the wild has been published in the available sources. Members of the genus are expected to follow the general characid pattern of open water egg-scattering, with females broadcasting adhesive or semi-adhesive eggs among fine-leaved aquatic plants and submerged vegetation, following a brief chasing courtship.

No parental care is exercised; after spawning both sexes separate from the egg mass, which is left to its own fate. Spawning in subtropical Oligosarcus species in the wild is likely tied to the spring and summer temperature rise in the Jacuí basin, with the warmest months triggering reproductive activity, though direct field observations for this species are absent from the literature at this time.

Breeding

Oligosarcus varii has not been reported in the aquarium hobby literature as a captive-bred species, and no detailed breeding accounts are available in the sources consulted. By analogy with congeners that have been spawned in captivity — including other lowland Oligosarcus — the species would be expected to scatter adhesive eggs among fine-leaved plants or over a substrate, with fertilisation occurring during a brief, active spawning chase.

If bred in captivity, standard open-spawning protocols for predatory characids would apply: a spacious, well-planted aquarium; conditioning adults with high-quality meaty foods; a temperature increase to simulate the seasonal warm-season trigger; and prompt removal of eggs or adults after spawning to prevent egg predation. Fry would likely require small live foods at first — Artemia nauplii or suitably sized live invertebrates — graduating to whole small fish or meaty foods as jaw size increases.

In the aquarium

Oligosarcus varii is not an established aquarium fish and is essentially absent from the hobby. Given the species' piscivorous habits and moderate to large adult size — up to around 8 in SL — it would require a spacious aquarium, ideally well filtered and with a tight-fitting lid, as active predatory characids are capable jumpers. Suitable tankmates would need to be large enough not to constitute prey; in practice, many keepers of similarly predatory South American characids maintain them as species-only groups or with other large, robust fishes of comparable size.

Water conditions consistent with subtropical Rio Grande do Sul should be provided: temperatures in the range of 64–75 °F to reflect the seasonal range of the Jacuí basin, with neutral to slightly acidic pH and soft to moderately hard water typical of Atlantic Forest river systems. A sand or fine-gravel substrate, moderate current, and subdued lighting with some cover will suit the species' natural riverine habitat. Long-term captive maintenance likely poses no unusual difficulties once feeding is established, but the combination of piscivory, adult size, and near-total absence from the trade means it is a specialist's fish.

Conservation

Oligosarcus varii has not been formally assessed by the IUCN Red List; the cache of available data records it as Not Evaluated (NE) with no species-specific assessment on file.

As an endemic of a single river basin — the Rio Jacuí system of Rio Grande do Sul — the species has a naturally limited range that makes it inherently vulnerable to basin-scale threats. The Jacuí watershed has been extensively modified for agriculture, water abstraction, and hydroelectric infrastructure over the past century; Rio Grande do Sul is among the most intensively farmed states in Brazil. These pressures affect the Atlantic Forest stream fauna broadly. Until a formal IUCN assessment is conducted, the actual conservation trajectory of O. varii cannot be determined with confidence, though its restricted endemism warrants monitoring attention.
