Parapristella georgiae — the false rummynose tetra — is a slender, shoaling characin from the blackwater and clearwater drainages of the western Amazon basin. Its vivid red snout and boldly banded tail are a near-perfect echo of the true rummynose tetra (Hemigrammus bleheri), yet the two are only distantly related, making the resemblance one of the hobby's more striking examples of convergent pattern evolution. Peaceful, active, and best displayed in large groups, it remains a rewarding and widely kept aquarium species.

Taxonomy & naming

Parapristella georgiae was described by the French–Brazilian ichthyologist Jacques Géry in 1964. The genus Parapristella was erected by Géry to accommodate this species; it sits within the diverse family Characidae, the largest family of freshwater fishes in South America. Eschmeyer's Catalog of Fishes treats Parapristella georgiae Géry, 1964 as the valid name; populations and specimens have historically also circulated under Petitella georgiae, a synonym reflecting past placement in that allied genus, and hobbyist literature still commonly uses the name Petitella georgiae.

The species has been reported from the Rio Purus, Rio Negro, and Rio Madeira drainages in Brazil, and from the Meta River and Aguaro River basins in Colombia — an indication that its range spans a substantial arc of the western and central Amazon lowlands. FishBase records a 2 in standard length maximum. The common name 'false rummynose tetra' distinguishes it from the true rummynose tetras of Hemigrammus, with which it is often confused in the trade.

Morphology

The false rummynose tetra is a slender, torpedo-shaped characin reaching roughly 1.5–2 in in standard length. The body is translucent silver, with the lateral musculature giving a faint rosy flush in well-conditioned individuals. The head and snout are bright red — the 'rummynose' character — and the caudal fin carries a crisp black-and-white banding pattern: broad black bands on both lobes separated by a white central bar, mirroring the pattern seen in Hemigrammus bleheri.

Despite its visual similarity to the true rummynose tetras, Parapristella georgiae is a distinct genus differing in subtle meristic and anatomical features. The convergence in colour pattern likely reflects shared signalling needs in dense shoals in low-visibility blackwater habitats, where a conspicuous tail pattern aids group cohesion. Sexual dimorphism is modest; females are typically slightly deeper-bodied and more rounded when in spawning condition.

Habitat

Parapristella georgiae inhabits the blackwater and clearwater tributaries of the western and central Amazon basin, with confirmed records from the Rio Purus, Rio Negro, and Rio Madeira drainages in Brazil and from rivers in Colombia. These are typically small, slow-moving or still-water systems — forest streams, flooded margins, and backwater pools — with dark, tannic-acid-stained water and soft, acidic conditions.

The species is associated with clear-water tributaries in the Seriously Fish account, suggesting it can also occur in clearer, though still soft and acidic, drainages. Water parameters in its range are characteristically warm and soft: temperatures of 72–79 °F, pH 5.5–7.0, and hardness of 1–12 dGH are reported. Habitat structure typically includes fine-leaved aquatic vegetation, submerged leaf litter, and driftwood, which provide cover and foraging surfaces.

Feeding

Parapristella georgiae is an omnivore in the wild, taking small invertebrates, zooplankton, and fine organic particles from the water column and submerged surfaces. Its small mouth makes it best suited to correspondingly small food items.

In the aquarium it adapts readily to prepared foods including quality flake and micro-pellets, but reaches its best colour and condition when offered small live or frozen foods such as Daphnia, brine shrimp nauplii, and finely chopped tubifex. Aqua-fish.net and Seriously Fish both note that live and frozen foods are important for optimal colouration; a fish kept on flake alone may be drab compared to one receiving a varied diet. Feeding small amounts two or three times daily suits its continuous foraging behaviour.

Mating

Parapristella georgiae is an egg-scattering open spawner with no parental care, following the typical characin reproductive pattern. Courtship is unelaborate: a ripe male pursues a receptive female through fine-leaved vegetation or over substrate, with spawning triggered by favourable conditions — clean, soft, slightly acidic water and good feeding. The species does not form pair bonds.

Spawning activity in captivity is most commonly observed in the early morning. Males chase females energetically, and eggs are scattered among fine-leaved plants, into spawning mops, or across the substrate. Because both parents and other group members will consume the eggs immediately, breeding success in a community aquarium is close to zero without intervention.

Breeding

To breed Parapristella georgiae successfully, a separate, well-conditioned spawning tank is recommended. A small aquarium with very soft, slightly acidic water (pH around 6.0–6.5, minimal hardness) and fine-leaved plants or spawning mops provides both trigger and egg repository. Adults conditioned on live and frozen foods come into breeding condition readily.

After spawning the adults should be removed; eggs hatch in approximately 24–36 hours (Seriously Fish) or around 30 hours (Aqua-fish.net) at typical breeding temperatures. The larvae hang near the surface for a further 3–4 days before becoming free-swimming and feeding. First foods should be very fine: infusoria or commercial liquid fry food initially, progressing quickly to freshly hatched brine shrimp nauplii as the fry grow. The species has a reported aquarium lifespan of 3–5 years.

In the aquarium

The false rummynose tetra is best kept in groups of ten or more individuals; Seriously Fish recommends a minimum of ten, and larger groups display the species' schooling behaviour and collectively vibrant tail-banding pattern most effectively. A well-planted aquarium with dark substrate, driftwood, and some surface cover to diffuse lighting mimics the species' natural blackwater environment and brings out its colours while keeping the fish confident and active.

Water conditions should be soft and moderately acidic: pH 5.5–7.0 and temperatures of 72–79 °F are the recommended range from both Seriously Fish and Aqua-fish.net. The species does not appreciate bright, hard, alkaline water. It is peaceful with similarly sized tankmates; good companions include other small characins, pencilfish, small corydoras, and dwarf cichlids compatible with soft water. It is not suitable as a companion for large or boisterous fish. The relatively modest care requirements and striking appearance make it a good choice for a biotope-inspired Amazon setup.

Conservation

Parapristella georgiae has not been formally assessed by the IUCN Red List; it is currently Not Evaluated (NE). Its wide distribution across multiple major Amazon drainages — Rio Negro, Rio Purus, Rio Madeira, and Colombian river systems — suggests the species is not under immediate threat across its range, though no systematic population surveys are documented in the available sources.

The species is commercially bred in large numbers by Southeast Asian fish farms and enters the hobby predominantly as captive-raised stock rather than wild-caught specimens. This trade structure reduces collection pressure on wild populations. Habitat loss and water quality degradation in Amazonian lowlands remain background concerns for many small characins, though no specific threat data for this species is available in the sources consulted.
