Poptella abathes is a small characid belonging to the subfamily Stethaprioninae, described from the upper Rio Araguaia drainage of Goiás state, Brazil, in 2025. One of three new Poptella species diagnosed in the same study, it is distinguished from its congeners by a relatively larger mouth and shallower body depth. Known only from its type series, it has yet to receive a common name or an IUCN conservation assessment.

Taxonomy & naming

Poptella abathes was formally described by Garcia-Ayala, Oliveira, and Benine in 2025 in the Journal of Fish Biology, as one of three new species of Poptella diagnosed in that paper. The holotype (MZUSP 130990, 1.5 in SL) was collected at Nova Crixás, Goiás, Brazil, from the Rio Javaés in the upper Rio Araguaia basin. Poptella is placed in the subfamily Stethaprioninae of the family Characidae.

The genus Poptella currently contains roughly four recognised species distributed across South American river systems. Members of the genus are sometimes called discus tetras in the hobby, reflecting their somewhat laterally compressed, disc-shaped body plan. The species epithet abathes has not been publicly glossed in available sources at time of writing; the authors may have derived it from a Greek or Latin root, but this cannot be confirmed without the full publication text.

Morphology

The holotype of Poptella abathes measures 1.5 in standard length (SL). Like other members of the genus, P. abathes has a laterally compressed, deep-bodied profile that gives it a discoid appearance typical of Stethaprioninae. Within Poptella it is characterised by a larger mouth and a shallower body relative to congeners, and by 9 branched dorsal-fin rays.

Detailed meristic and morphometric data are published in the 2025 Journal of Fish Biology description; additional colour-in-life notes and comparative measurements are available only in that primary source. General colouration for the genus runs to silvery flanks, sometimes with a faint lateral stripe or dark shoulder blotch, but specific colouration for P. abathes awaits wider documentation in the literature and hobby press.

Habitat

The type locality for Poptella abathes is the Rio Javaés near Nova Crixás, Goiás, Brazil, within the upper Rio Araguaia basin. The Rio Araguaia is a major tributary of the Tocantins-Araguaia system and flows through the Cerrado biome, one of South America's most biodiverse savannahs and a globally recognised biodiversity hotspot.

Cerrado river systems typically support clear to moderately turbid, warm water with low to moderate conductivity, subject to pronounced wet and dry seasonal fluctuations that influence depth, current velocity, and habitat availability. The distribution of P. abathes beyond its immediate type locality has not been documented in published sources available at time of writing; whether the species is widespread in the upper Araguaia or restricted to a limited reach remains to be established.

Feeding

No feeding ecology data specific to Poptella abathes have been published in sources available at time of writing. Members of the genus Poptella and stethaprionine characids more broadly are typically omnivorous, consuming plant material, invertebrates, and zooplankton in the wild.

In the aquarium, related species such as Poptella paraguayensis are reported to accept a wide variety of prepared and live foods, including high-quality flake, small pellets, and frozen invertebrate foods. A similarly varied diet would be appropriate for P. abathes, though keeper experience with this recently described species is not yet documented in the hobby literature.

Mating

No mating or reproductive behaviour data have been recorded for Poptella abathes in available literature. Stethaprionine characids are generally egg-scattering, open-water or plant-associated spawners with no parental care — a reproductive strategy common across the Characidae.

Based on the biology of congeners and related genera, courtship is likely brief and involves paired or group spawning over fine-leaved vegetation or open substrate, with adhesive or semi-adhesive eggs scattered among plants or allowed to settle. Until the species is maintained and bred in captivity, these inferences remain provisional.

Breeding

Captive breeding of Poptella abathes has not been reported in sources available at time of writing, as the species was described in 2025 and has not yet entered the ornamental trade. Based on the reproductive biology of other Poptella and stethaprionine characids, spawning would likely involve egg scattering among fine-leaved plants or spawning mops, with small adhesive eggs and no parental care.

Typical incubation for small characids at tropical temperatures runs from 24 to 72 hours, with free-swimming fry requiring small live foods such as infusoria or rotifers before graduating to newly hatched brine shrimp. All breeding notes here are generalised from related species; actual observations for P. abathes await documentation.

In the aquarium

Poptella abathes is not established in the ornamental trade as of 2025, and no keeper accounts are available. The closely related Poptella paraguayensis is maintained by hobbyists and is described as a peaceful, active schooling fish suitable for community aquaria; similar husbandry would likely apply to P. abathes.

Based on the natural habitat in the Cerrado river systems of central Brazil, soft to moderately hard, neutral to slightly acidic water at temperatures in the 75–82 °F range would be a reasonable starting point. A spacious, well-planted aquarium with open swimming space and a group of six or more individuals would suit the schooling nature typical of the genus. As with all recently described wild-caught characids, any specimens obtained should be quarantined carefully and their wild origin confirmed before purchase.

Conservation

Poptella abathes has not been evaluated by the IUCN Red List; the species was described in 2025 and carries a status of Not Evaluated (NE). No conservation data are available in published sources at time of writing.

The upper Rio Araguaia basin lies within the Cerrado biome, which has experienced severe deforestation and agricultural conversion — roughly half of the original Cerrado vegetation has been lost to date, with ongoing pressure from soy cultivation and cattle ranching. River systems in this region face sedimentation, altered hydrology, and water quality degradation. Whether P. abathes has a restricted or more widespread distribution in the Araguaia system will determine its vulnerability; documentation of its range extent and population status is a necessary next step for any future IUCN assessment.
