Taxonomy & naming

Poptella longipinnis was described by the Dutch ichthyologist C.M.L. Popta in 1901. The authority is rendered in parentheses in the current combination because the species was originally placed in a different genus and was later transferred to Poptella. Eschmeyer's Catalog of Fishes (CAS) treats Poptella longipinnis (Popta, 1901) as the valid name.

The genus Poptella is placed in the family Characidae and belongs to a group of neotropical open-water schooling characins. The genus contains a handful of species distributed across lowland river systems of South America.
