Taxonomy & naming
Poptella compressa was first described by the German-born British ichthyologist Albert Günther in his monumental Catalogue of the Fishes in the British Museum, volume five, published in 1864. Günther based the description on material from the Rio Essequibo in Guiana, where it was the type locality, and placed the species in the broad wastebasket genus Tetragonopterus as T. compressus. The parenthetical authority in the current binomial — (Günther, 1864) — records that generic transfer.
The genus Poptella was erected to accommodate a small cluster of laterally compressed characins from tropical South America. Poptella compressa is the type species of the genus and the most widely distributed member. Eschmeyer's Catalog of Fishes (Fricke, Eschmeyer & Fong) treats Poptella compressa (Günther, 1864) as the valid name. The species sits within the tribe Stethaprionini, a grouping of compressed, often silvery characins distributed across the lowland river systems of northern and central South America.
No subspecies are currently recognised, and the name has been applied consistently since the generic revision; older literature may list the fish under Tetragonopterus compressus or within junior synonyms of Poptella.
Morphology
The specific epithet compressa — Latin for 'compressed' — describes the fish's most obvious feature: a strongly laterally compressed, deep-bodied profile that gives it a disc-like silhouette from the front. The body is silvery overall, with scales that catch light and a faint iridescent sheen along the flanks. A variable dark lateral stripe or patch near the caudal peduncle may be present, but the patterning is unremarkable by characin standards.
Adult Poptella compressa reach approximately 4 in total length, making them one of the larger members of the genus and larger than many hobby tetras. The fins are clear to slightly yellowish, with the forked caudal fin well developed. The mouth is terminal and moderately sized, consistent with a generalist omnivore. The body depth and compression distinguish it readily from slimmer characins sharing its range, though juvenile fish are proportionally less deep than adults.
Habitat
Poptella compressa occupies a broad lowland distribution across the Orinoco and Amazon river basins, including coastal drainages of Venezuela, the Guianas, and northeastern Brazil. The type locality is the Rio Essequibo in Guiana, and the species has been recorded from the Orinoco system in Venezuela and from various tributaries of the middle and lower Amazon drainage.
It is a freshwater, benthopelagic species — active in the lower and middle water column rather than strictly at the surface or bottom — encountered in rivers, streams, and associated flooded habitats. Water conditions across its range span the warm tropics; aquarium and field data suggest temperatures in the range 73–82 °F (73–82 °F). As with many widely distributed Neotropical characins, it likely tolerates a range of water chemistries, from the soft, acidic blackwaters typical of much of Amazonia to the harder, whitewater rivers.
It is a gregarious species, travelling and feeding in loose schools, which is the typical habit for members of the genus.
Feeding
FishBase records a trophic level of 3.2 for Poptella compressa, placing it at the boundary between herbivory and low-level carnivory — a classic omnivore position for Neotropical small characins. In nature the diet is assumed to include small invertebrates, insect larvae, microcrustaceans, and plant or algal material grazed opportunistically.
In captivity the species is undemanding: good-quality flake and small pellets form a suitable base, supplemented with frozen or live foods such as Daphnia, bloodworm, and brine shrimp to maintain condition and colour. A varied diet is advisable for any long-term resident. Being a mid-water schooling species it competes readily at feeding time, and care should be taken to ensure subordinate fish in a group receive adequate food.
Mating
Poptella compressa, like the great majority of small characins, is an egg-scattering open spawner. Males are likely to pursue females actively and spawn in the presence of fine-leaved vegetation or other submerged cover, following the pattern typical of the Characidae. No courtship structures, spawning aggregations, or unusual mating behaviours have been described for the genus.
Spawning activity in related characins is often triggered by gradual water changes that simulate the onset of the wet season — a slight cooling, a drop in hardness, or an increase in water movement. Males in breeding condition may develop small spawning tubercles on the pectoral fins and head, a common characin trait. No parental care is provided; adults ignore or actively consume their own eggs once spawned.
Breeding
Detailed aquarium breeding data for Poptella compressa are sparse in the published literature, and the species is not commonly bred in captivity. Based on the standard egg-scattering mode typical of Characidae and comparable genera, breeding is expected to follow the pattern seen across the family: the pair or group spawns over fine-leaved plants or a spawning mop, depositing small, adhesive eggs that settle among the substrate or cling to vegetation.
Eggs should be removed from the adults promptly, as the parents will eat them. Incubation at warm tropical temperatures is typically 24–48 hours for small characin eggs, with the fry becoming free-swimming within a few days of hatching. First foods for the fry would be infusoria or commercial liquid fry food, progressing to newly hatched brine shrimp as the fish grow. A separate, well-covered breeding tank reduces egg predation. In the aquarium
Poptella compressa is an active, schooling species that does best in groups of six or more. Its relatively large adult size — up to 4 in TL — means it needs more space than the typical hobby tetra; a tank of 39.5 in or more in length is appropriate for a proper group, with open swimming area in the midwater and some planted or decorated margins for the fish to retreat to.
Water conditions should reflect a warm tropical lowland river: 73–82 °F (73–82 °F), with a pH broadly in the neutral to slightly acidic range. Good filtration with moderate flow is appreciated; these are schooling river fish accustomed to well-oxygenated water. Tankmates should be chosen for similar size and temperament — the fish is peaceful but large enough that very small tankmates may be at risk. Larger tetras, peaceful cichlids, and other mid-sized Neotropical schooling fish are reasonable companions.
The species is not widely available in the hobby, and most specimens that appear in the trade are wild-caught imports. Aquarists seeking it should enquire at specialist tetra importers. Despite its relative obscurity, it is a handsome, active fish that holds its own in a species-appropriate setup.
Conservation
Poptella compressa is recorded as Least Concern (LC) in FishBase based on a 2021 assessment, consistent with its broad distribution across multiple major river basins in northern South America. A species ranging across the Orinoco, Amazon, and coastal drainages of Venezuela and the Guianas is unlikely to face imminent range-wide threat, and no formal IUCN Red List assessment document is available for this species on the IUCN website.
The LC designation reflects the species' wide occurrence and tolerance of the varied freshwater habitats of lowland Neotropical South America.
