Poptella paraguayensis is a small, silver-sided characin from the Paraguay–Paraná River basin of South America. A member of the modest genus Poptella within the vast family Characidae, it is a little-known fish in both the scientific literature and the aquarium hobby, seldom appearing in trade under a recognised common name. What it shares with its congeners is the genus's characteristic deep, laterally compressed body, a bright silver flanks, and the egg-scattering lifestyle typical of open-water characins across the Neotropical region.

Taxonomy & naming

Poptella paraguayensis was described by Carl H. Eigenmann in 1907 from material collected in the Paraguayan section of the La Plata drainage. The parenthetical authority indicates that the species was originally placed in a different genus and subsequently transferred to Poptella. Eschmeyer's Catalog of Fishes (Fricke, Eschmeyer & Van der Laan) is the accepted authority for the current valid combination Poptella paraguayensis (Eigenmann, 1907).

The genus Poptella belongs to the subfamily Stevardiinae sensu lato within the family Characidae, a placement that has been revised repeatedly as molecular and morphological analyses have refined characid systematics. Poptella is a small genus of silver-bodied, deep-flanked tetras distributed across river systems of central and northern South America. P. paraguayensis is one of the geographically southernmost members of the genus, its range anchored in the Paraguay River and the upper Paraná basin rather than in the Amazonian lowlands where most congeners occur.

Morphology

Like other members of Poptella, P. paraguayensis is a laterally compressed, relatively deep-bodied characin with a strongly silvered lateral surface. The body is oval in profile, deeper than it is wide, with a small, terminally positioned mouth and the adipose fin characteristic of most characids positioned between the rayed dorsal and the forked caudal fin. Published size data for this species are sparse; congeners in the genus typically reach 1–2 in standard length, and P. paraguayensis is not reported to be notably larger or smaller than this range.

The silvery coloration, which reflects ambient light and produces a flash visible in open water, is characteristic of schooling characins that occupy mid-water habitats. No strongly contrasting markings — lateral bands, caudal spots, or fin pigmentation — have been prominently documented for this species in the available literature, though as with many poorly documented small characins, detailed external descriptions remain limited in readily accessible sources.

Habitat

Poptella paraguayensis is associated with the Paraguay–Paraná River system, one of the great river drainages of central South America, extending through portions of Paraguay, Brazil, Bolivia, and Argentina. This is a large, warm, lowland river system that supports a high diversity of small characins, and P. paraguayensis occupies the southern extension of the genus's South American range.

Specific microhabitat data for this species are sparse in the accessible literature. Based on the ecology of congeners and the general biology of open-water small characins in Paraguayan rivers, the species is expected to occur in mid-water schooling situations in main-channel and floodplain habitats, including turbid main river reaches and the calmer backwaters and lagoons associated with the Paraná-Paraguay floodplain. Water temperatures across this drainage typically range from approximately 68 °F in the austral winter to 82 °F or higher in summer, and pH varies broadly across the system.

Feeding

No specific dietary studies appear to have been published for Poptella paraguayensis. The feeding biology of Poptella species in general follows the pattern common in small neotropical characins: opportunistic omnivory with a preference for small invertebrates, including aquatic insect larvae, microcrustaceans, and small terrestrial invertebrates falling onto the water surface, supplemented by algae, plant fragments, and organic detritus.

In an aquarium setting, P. paraguayensis would be expected to accept the full range of foods commonly offered to small characins — quality prepared flake and micro-pellet, frozen and live foods such as Daphnia, Artemia nauplii, and bloodworm. A varied diet is advisable to maintain good condition and natural coloration in any small schooling characin.

Mating

Poptella paraguayensis is an egg-scattering open spawner with no parental care, following the reproductive pattern typical of the vast majority of characins in the family Characidae. No specific courtship descriptions have been published for this species, but the pattern seen across Poptella and related characins involves males pursuing ripe females through vegetation or open water, with eggs and milt broadcast simultaneously over fine-leaved plants or submerged substrate.

As in other egg-scattering characins, adhesive or semi-adhesive eggs settle among vegetation or onto the substrate after spawning. Adults take no interest in the eggs and will consume them given the opportunity. Dimorphism, if present, is likely subtle in this species; gravid females are typically more rounded in the belly region, as is common across small characins.

Breeding

No detailed captive breeding accounts for Poptella paraguayensis are available in the hobby literature. The general approach for breeding small egg-scattering characins applies: condition a small group with live and frozen foods, provide a dedicated spawning tank with fine-leaved vegetation or synthetic spawning mops, and either remove the adults after spawning or transfer the eggs to a separate vessel to avoid predation.

Egg incubation in similar small characins at temperatures of 75–79 °F typically takes 24–48 hours, with free-swimming fry appearing within a few days. Initial fry foods should be very fine — infusoria, commercial liquid fry preparations, or rotifers — before advancing to newly hatched Artemia as the fry grow. This species is not established in the hobby trade, and captive breeding data remain essentially undocumented.

In the aquarium

Poptella paraguayensis is not an established aquarium fish and is rarely if ever available through mainstream trade. Hobbyists who encounter it through specialist South American fish importers or scientific contacts would find a peaceful, schooling characin suited to a community aquarium with similarly sized fishes from the same geographic region — other small to medium characins, peaceful corydoras, and loricariids from the Paraguay–Paraná basin.

As with all small schooling characins, a group of at least six to eight individuals is preferable to allow natural shoaling behaviour to be expressed. Water conditions reflecting the warm, variable conditions of the Paraguayan lowlands — temperatures of 72–81 °F and a neutral to slightly acidic pH — would be appropriate. The fish is not thought to present any particular challenge in terms of water quality requirements, though the near-absence of hobby documentation means care specifics should be extrapolated from well-studied congeners.

Conservation

Poptella paraguayensis has not been formally assessed by the IUCN Red List; its conservation status is therefore Not Evaluated (NE). The species' occurrence in the Paraguay–Paraná basin, a large and extensive river system, suggests it is not immediately at risk from range restriction alone, though no population surveys or abundance data are available in the accessible literature.

The Paraguay–Paraná system faces ongoing pressures including agricultural runoff, floodplain modification, and expanding navigation infrastructure, pressures that affect many small fish species across the drainage. Without a formal assessment, the status of P. paraguayensis remains unknown, and data deficiency is itself a concern for a species that has attracted little scientific or hobbyist attention since its original description over a century ago.
