Taxonomy & naming
Serrapinnus kriegi was originally described in 1937, with the authority credited in parentheses — indicating subsequent generic reassignment — as (Schindler, 1937). The species belongs to the genus Serrapinnus, a group of small characids distributed across lowland South America east of the Andes. Catalog of Fishes (Eschmeyer, CAS) records the valid binomial as Serrapinnus kriegi (Schindler, 1937), placing the species within the family Characidae.
The genus Serrapinnus is sometimes treated as part of a broader complex of small, silvery characids that have historically shuffled between genera as phylogenetic analyses have refined subfamily limits. S. kriegi's placement has been confirmed by at least one distributional study documenting its range expansion into Uruguay and confirming its presence alongside the related S. calliurus in the Río Uruguay drainage, which effectively validates the current nomenclature.
Morphology
Krieg's mini tetra is one of the smaller Serrapinnus species, with maximum standard length around 1 in. The body is slender and laterally compressed, as is typical for the genus, with the fusiform build of a fast, open-water schooler. The overall colour is iridescent silver, with the flanks reflecting a faint blue or greenish cast depending on angle and lighting.
The most distinctive marking is a dark blotch at the base of the caudal peduncle, bordered above and below or distally by a paler or whitish edging — a pattern that gives the caudal region a crisp, contrasting finish. This caudal spot is characteristic of the species and assists identification. Fins are otherwise hyaline. Sexual dimorphism is modest at this scale; females tend to be slightly fuller-bodied when in breeding condition.
Habitat
Serrapinnus kriegi occurs in the Paraguay River drainage, with confirmed records from Argentina and Paraguay; distributional work has also documented its presence in Uruguay, extending the known range into the Río Uruguay system. It inhabits slow-moving streams, floodplain lagoons, and lake margins — the shallow, turbid-to-clear backwaters and lateral channels typical of lowland Neotropical drainages.
In these environments it associates with dense aquatic vegetation, submerged leaf litter, and marginal root mats that provide both cover and foraging substrate. Water conditions across its range span warm temperatures of roughly 72–81 °F and a pH of 6.0–7.5, reflecting the range of Paraguayan Basin water chemistry from soft, slightly acidic blackwaters to neutral, moderately mineralised whitewater tributaries.
Feeding
Serrapinnus kriegi is a micropredator that forages primarily on zooplankton and small invertebrates — copepods, cladocerans, small insect larvae, and other tiny aquatic organisms available in shallow, vegetated environments. At its adult size of under 1 in its gape is necessarily small, and it targets prey items proportionally minute.
In the aquarium it accepts micro-pellets, fine-grade flake food, and live or frozen invertebrates such as Daphnia, baby brine shrimp, and Cyclops nauplii. Live or frozen foods improve condition and bring out schooling and foraging behaviour; a diet relying solely on dry food is adequate but suboptimal for long-term health.
Mating
Like the great majority of small characids, Serrapinnus kriegi is an egg-scattering open spawner. Males pursue females through fine-leaved vegetation or over open substrate during spawning activity, and courtship consists largely of close-following and lateral displays between potential mates. FishBase records the species as oviparous with distinct pairing, suggesting that paired spawning runs are a component of the mating behaviour rather than purely broadcast group spawning.
There is no evidence of any parental bond or territory defence in the species. As with other small tetras, multiple pairs or small groups may spawn simultaneously in suitable conditions, and the adhesive or semi-adhesive eggs are deposited among fine-leaved plants or into the substrate.
Breeding
Serrapinnus kriegi spawns in the manner typical of small, open-spawning characids: eggs are scattered among fine-leaved aquatic vegetation, with no parental care following fertilisation. The adults will readily consume eggs if given the opportunity, so breeders remove spawning adults or transfer the spawning medium to a separate container after spawning is complete.
Egg incubation at the species' preferred temperature range of approximately 75–79 °F is expected to follow the pattern of comparable small tetras, with hatching in one to three days and free-swimming fry a few days after that. First foods must be appropriately small — infusoria, rotifers, or commercial nano-fry preparations — before the fry can accept newly hatched brine shrimp nauplii. Given the species' tiny adult size, growth is rapid relative to body length, and fry reach a recognisable juvenile form quickly.
In the aquarium
Serrapinnus kriegi is best suited to a species or community nano aquarium where its small size is not a disadvantage and its lively schooling behaviour can be fully expressed. A group of ten or more individuals will form a coherent school that moves through open water between planted areas, making effective use of a tank as small as 10–15 US gal for a dedicated colony. The species is peaceful and non-aggressive.
Water parameters should fall within 72–81 °F and pH 6.0–7.5 — a forgiving range that suits many soft-to-neutral South American community setups. Good filtration and regular water changes are important given the small water volume typical of nano tanks. Tankmates, if any, must be non-predatory and similarly sized; very small rasboras, dwarf corydoras, and other nano tetras are compatible choices. The iridescent silver colouration is best appreciated under moderate lighting with a dark substrate and planted background.
Conservation
Serrapinnus kriegi has not been formally assessed by the IUCN Red List and carries a status of Not Evaluated (NE). No dedicated conservation assessment is available for the species. Its distribution across the Paraguay River drainage — spanning Argentina, Paraguay, and Uruguay — suggests it occupies a reasonably broad range within the lowland Neotropical zone, which typically affords greater resilience than highly restricted endemics.
Nonetheless, the Paraguay River basin faces documented habitat pressures including wetland conversion, agricultural runoff, and altered hydrology. A recent range-extension record into Uruguay adds to the picture of a species whose full distribution and abundance remain incompletely surveyed. Formal assessment under IUCN criteria would help clarify whether any portions of the population face significant threat.
