Poecilia hasemani is one of the obscure, undecorated members of a famous genus — a tiny live-bearing toothcarp from the Paraguay River basin of South America, described a century ago and rarely seen since. At barely two and a half centimetres it is among the smallest of the Poecilia, with none of the gaudy colour or aquarium fame of its cousin the guppy. The published record is thin: a valid name, a drainage, a maximum length, and the family's universal hallmark of internal fertilisation and live birth. Beyond that, much of what can responsibly be said about the species is inferred from its close relatives, and the honest summary is that the wild biology of Haseman's toothcarp remains largely unstudied.

Taxonomy & naming

Poecilia hasemani was described by Arthur Wilbur Henn in 1916, on material collected from the Paraguay River drainage of South America. The species epithet honours John Diederich Haseman (1882–1969), the zoologist and ichthyologist whose collecting expeditions through the river systems of Brazil and Paraguay yielded much of the type material on which early twentieth-century descriptions of South American fishes were based. Eschmeyer's Catalog of Fishes treats Poecilia hasemani (Henn, 1916) as the valid name, the parentheses indicating that the species was originally placed in a different genus and has since been combined into Poecilia.

The genus Poecilia sits within the family Poeciliidae, the New World livebearers — the group that also contains the guppies, mollies and their relatives. Poecilia is a large and taxonomically fluid genus, and its internal arrangement has been revised repeatedly as authors have weighed morphology against molecular evidence; the tribe Poeciliini to which it belongs was the subject of a phylogenetic analysis by Rodriguez (1997), which remains a standard reference for the relationships of these fishes. Within that broad framework P. hasemani is a small, plainly marked species of the Paraguay basin, distinct from the better-known guppy and molly lineages but sharing their reproductive biology.

The generic name Poecilia derives from the Greek poikilos, meaning varied or many-coloured, a reference to the variegated patterning of the genus as a whole rather than to this particular species, which is comparatively drab. Compared with its relatives, P. hasemani has attracted little study, and no widely used common name beyond the descriptive "Haseman's toothcarp" appears in the literature.

Morphology

Poecilia hasemani is a very small fish, reaching a maximum of about 1 in in total length according to FishBase — placing it among the smaller members of an already small-bodied genus, and well short of the five-to-six-centimetre females of the familiar guppy. Both sexes are diminutive, and the species lacks the bright pigment and elaborate finnage that have made other Poecilia popular in the aquarium trade; it is a plain, silvery little toothcarp built to the standard poeciliid plan.

As in all poeciliids, the most reliable structural distinction between the sexes is the male's gonopodium — a slender intromittent organ formed from modified rays of the anal fin and used to transfer sperm internally to the female. Females are typically the larger and deeper-bodied sex and, when carrying young, develop the characteristic darkened gravid region at the rear of the abdomen seen across live-bearing poeciliids. Detailed morphometric and meristic data specific to P. hasemani are sparse in the accessible literature; a published length–weight relationship gives Bayesian parameters of a ≈ 0.00851 and b ≈ 3.15, consistent with the slender, small-bodied form expected of the species. Beyond size and the genus-typical body plan, fine-scale colour and pattern descriptions for this species are limited.

Habitat

Poecilia hasemani is a South American freshwater fish recorded from the Paraguay River drainage — the Río Paraguay basin — which spans parts of Paraguay, Brazil, Bolivia and Argentina. FishBase classifies it as a freshwater, pelagic, tropical species, consistent with the warm lowland waters of that vast river system, where small poeciliids typically inhabit the shallow margins, backwaters, ditches, ponds and slow-moving stretches rather than the open channel.

The Paraguay basin is a low-gradient, seasonally flooded system draining the great Pantanal wetland, and small live-bearing fishes of this kind generally favour vegetated shallows and quiet marginal water where invertebrate food and cover are abundant. Species-specific habitat data for P. hasemani — preferred temperature, pH, hardness and the precise microhabitats it occupies — have not been published in the sources consulted, so the picture here is drawn from the species' recorded distribution and the general ecology of small Poecilia in the same drainage rather than from a dedicated field study. Data on this point are genuinely sparse.

Feeding

No direct dietary study of Poecilia hasemani appears in the accessible literature, and FishBase assigns it only an estimated trophic level of roughly 2.6 — a figure inferred from its size and relatives rather than from gut-content analysis. A value in that range points to an omnivorous, low-on-the-food-chain habit, with a diet leaning toward plant and detrital material supplemented by small animal prey.

By analogy with other small poeciliids of the same drainage, P. hasemani can reasonably be expected to graze on algae, diatoms, detritus and aufwuchs while also taking small aquatic invertebrates, microcrustaceans and insect larvae from the surface film and the water column. Such fishes are typically opportunistic micro-predators and grazers whose intake shifts with whatever the habitat offers through the seasons. This account is explicitly an inference from the species' size, estimated trophic level and the feeding ecology of its relatives; no species-specific feeding observations were available to confirm it.

Mating

Like all members of the family Poeciliidae, Poecilia hasemani reproduces by internal fertilisation. The male carries a gonopodium — a tubular organ formed from elongated and modified rays of the anal fin — through which he transfers packets of sperm directly to the female, rather than the external spawning of egg-laying fishes. This single innovation underlies the entire reproductive strategy of the live-bearing toothcarps.

In poeciliids generally, males pursue females and attempt to inseminate them, often combining brief courtship with opportunistic "sneak" copulation, and females are commonly able to store viable sperm internally for extended periods, allowing a single mating to fertilise several successive broods. Whether P. hasemani shows the elaborate courtship displays and female colour preferences documented in the guppy is unknown; given the species' plain appearance and the absence of any published behavioural study, no such claim can be made for it specifically. What can be stated with confidence is the mechanism — internal fertilisation via the gonopodium — because it is a defining and invariant feature of the family to which this fish belongs.

Breeding

Poecilia hasemani is, like its relatives, a viviparous livebearer: the female retains the fertilised eggs internally and gives birth to free-swimming young rather than depositing eggs. The mode of nourishment in Poecilia is lecithotrophic — the developing embryos draw chiefly on yolk reserves laid down in the egg rather than on a placenta-like maternal supply — and after a gestation period the female releases fully formed, independently swimming fry.

No species-specific data on gestation length, brood size or breeding seasonality have been published for P. hasemani in the sources consulted, and FishBase carries no reproductive figures at the species level. In small Poecilia generally, gestation runs on the order of a few weeks and brood sizes scale with female body size; for a fish this small, broods would be expected to be modest. The species' high resilience rating — a population doubling time estimated at under fifteen months — is consistent with the rapid, repeated reproduction typical of small poeciliids, even though the underlying brood statistics have not themselves been measured for this species. Superfetation, the simultaneous carrying of broods at different developmental stages, is documented in some Poeciliidae but has not been reported for P. hasemani and should not be assumed for it.

In the aquarium

Poecilia hasemani is essentially absent from the aquarium hobby. A targeted search for care, biotope or breeding pages specific to the species returned nothing — no livebearer-society profile, no captive-breeding record, no trade presence. It is an obscure wild poeciliid rather than an established aquarium fish, and any keeping notes here would be inference rather than reported experience.

Were the species to be maintained, the broad requirements of small Paraguay-basin Poecilia would apply: warm, stable, well-filtered fresh water; gentle flow; densely planted, vegetated margins that provide both grazing surfaces and cover for fry; and a varied diet of small flake, micro-foods and live or frozen invertebrates. As with other small livebearers, fry are vulnerable to predation by the adults — including their own mother — so dense planting or separation would be needed to raise them. These are general expectations for the group, not husbandry validated for this species, and the honest position is that P. hasemani has no documented track record in captivity.

Conservation

Poecilia hasemani is assessed as Least Concern on the IUCN Red List, in an assessment dated 9 November 2020 (IUCN species ID 164528578). A Least Concern listing reflects a species that is widespread or abundant enough, and free enough of major threats, not to qualify for a threatened category — consistent with a small, resilient poeciliid distributed across the large Paraguay River drainage.

FishBase rates the species as having high resilience, with an estimated minimum population doubling time of under fifteen months, and a low fishing vulnerability — unsurprising for a fish of barely two and a half centimetres that has no commercial or food value. There is no indication in the consulted record of targeted threats to the species. As with much of the rest of its biology, however, detailed population data are not published; the Least Concern status rests on the species' broad distribution and the general health of small fish communities in its basin rather than on close population monitoring of P. hasemani itself.
