Taxonomy & naming
Pseudochalceus bohlkei was described by the Ecuadorian zoologist Gustavo Edmundo Orcés Villagómez in 1967. Orcés (1902–1999) was a pioneering figure in Ecuadorian natural history and one of the country's foremost twentieth-century zoologists; this species represents one of his contributions to ichthyology. The valid name as recognised in Eschmeyer's Catalog of Fishes is Pseudochalceus bohlkei Orcés V., 1967.
The genus Pseudochalceus belongs to the family Characidae — the large and taxonomically complex family of New World characins. It is a small Neotropical genus with a distribution centred on the Pacific-draining river systems of Ecuador and Colombia, a region whose fish fauna is still incompletely inventoried. P. bohlkei is the most data-sparse of the genus's species, with limited material in museum collections and no detailed systematic revision available in the open literature.
Morphology
Pseudochalceus bohlkei reaches a maximum recorded standard length of 2.5 in, placing it among the smaller members of its genus. It has the typical body form of a small, active characin: moderately elongate and laterally compressed, with the characteristic adipose fin of the family positioned between the dorsal and caudal fins.
Detailed morphological description is sparse in the accessible literature. As a member of Pseudochalceus it is presumed to share the general body plan of the genus — a slender profile suited to moving water — though the specific fin-ray counts, scale formula, and colour pattern that distinguish P. bohlkei from its congeners are not well documented outside the original description, which is not available in digitised form. Collectors and researchers encountering this species in Ecuadorian streams would need to refer to the original 1967 account for diagnostic characters.
Habitat
Pseudochalceus bohlkei is an Ecuadorian endemic restricted to coastal rivers and forest streams on the Pacific side of the western Andes. These habitats are characterised by tropical rainforest cover, relatively soft and mildly acidic water chemistry, and a seasonal rainfall pattern driven by Pacific weather systems. The available habitat data points to soft, slightly acidic freshwater: pH roughly 6.0–7.0 and temperatures in the range of 73–79 °F (73–79 °F), consistent with shaded forest streams at low to moderate elevation.
FishBase classifies the species as benthopelagic — associated with the lower water column and substrate as well as open water — in tropical freshwater. The rivers of Ecuador's western lowlands feed eventually into the Pacific through a biodiversity-rich but threatened mosaic of premontane and lowland forest. How widely P. bohlkei is distributed within this zone, and whether its range extends north into Colombia, remains poorly resolved.
Feeding
No published dietary study for Pseudochalceus bohlkei is available. Based on its size, body form, and membership in Characidae, it is inferred to be insectivorous or broadly omnivorous, feeding on small invertebrates — aquatic insect larvae, terrestrial insects falling onto the water surface, and possibly small crustaceans — as is typical of small characins inhabiting forest streams.
In the aquarium, small characins from similar habitats generally accept live and frozen invertebrate foods (Daphnia, brine shrimp, small bloodworm), and a diet anchored by such items would likely suit P. bohlkei well. Good-quality fine-grained prepared foods would supplement a live-food base. Because the species is essentially unknown in the hobby, there is no accumulated keeper experience to draw on.
Mating
No specific mating behaviour has been documented for Pseudochalceus bohlkei. As a small characin it almost certainly follows the typical characid reproductive strategy of open egg-scattering with no parental care. In related small characins, males pursue females during spawning, and eggs are scattered among fine-leaved vegetation or deposited over the substrate where they are immediately abandoned.
The species has not been bred in captivity under documented conditions, and any account of its specific courtship or spawning cues would be speculative. The general characid pattern — triggered by water changes, slight temperature shifts, and a well-conditioned pair — is the working assumption for any keeper who might encounter this fish.
Breeding
Pseudochalceus bohlkei is not known to have been bred in captivity. No breeding records are available in the hobby or scientific literature. By analogy with related small stream characins, it would be expected to scatter small, adhesive or semi-adhesive eggs among fine-leaved plants or over a soft substrate, with the adults offering no parental care and likely consuming eggs if left in the spawning vessel.
Should specimens become available to aquarists, the approach used for similar forest-stream tetras — a species tank with very soft, slightly acidic water, subdued lighting, fine-leaved plants or spawning mops, and careful conditioning on live foods — would represent a reasonable starting point. The eggs and newly hatched fry of small characins are typically minute and require infusoria or commercial liquid fry food as first foods.
In the aquarium
Pseudochalceus bohlkei is essentially unknown in the aquarium hobby. It does not appear in the trade and has not been the subject of keeper accounts in the hobby literature. What can reasonably be inferred from its ecological profile — a small schooling characin from soft, acidic, shaded forest streams in tropical Ecuador — is that it would require water chemistry at the softer, more acidic end of the tropical range, moderate temperatures around 75–79 °F (75–79 °F), and a well-planted, low-light setup approximating a forest-stream environment.
If specimens were ever to become available, they should be kept in a school of six or more, as is standard practice for small characins that are naturally found in groups. Peaceful tankmates of similar size from comparable soft-water habitats would be appropriate. Any serious keeper acquiring this species would be contributing genuinely new husbandry knowledge, as virtually nothing is documented.
Conservation
Pseudochalceus bohlkei is assessed as Data Deficient (DD) on the IUCN Red List. The assessment reflects genuine uncertainty: too little is known about the species' distribution, population size, and ecology to determine whether it meets any threatened category's criteria. Data Deficient is not a reassuring designation — it indicates an absence of knowledge, not an absence of threat.
Ecuador's Pacific-slope forests are among the most biodiverse and most heavily deforested habitats in the Americas. The western Andes and adjacent lowlands have lost large proportions of their original forest cover to agriculture, cattle ranching, and urbanisation, and the rivers draining this region face sedimentation, pesticide run-off, and flow alteration. A small endemic stream fish with an apparently restricted range in this landscape faces real but unquantified risks. Targeted survey work is needed to establish the species' actual range, abundance, and habitat requirements before any meaningful conservation assessment can be made.
