Pseudochalceus kyburzi is a slender, fast-water characid from the rivers and coastal streams of northwestern South America, where it inhabits the swift, pebble-strewn reaches of the Colombian and Venezuelan Orinoco basin and Pacific drainages. Named in honour of William A. Kyburz, an ornamental-fish exporter who helped collect the type material, it reaches around 3–4 in and is an active schooling species seldom encountered in the hobby despite its attractive build. The IUCN lists it as Data Deficient, a status that underscores how little formal survey work has been done across its range.

Taxonomy & naming

Pseudochalceus kyburzi was described by Leonard P. Schultz in 1966 in the Aquarium Journal Ichthyologica (volume 37, number 1, pages 25–30). The holotype, USNM 231738, is deposited at the Smithsonian's National Museum of Natural History and was collected in Colombia in 1964 by Herbert R. Axelrod; paratypes were supplied by William A. Kyburz. Eschmeyer's Catalog of Fishes records the valid name as Pseudochalceus kyburzi Schultz, 1966 and places it in the subfamily Stevardiinae of the family Characidae, though broader family-level discussions sometimes group stevardiin genera under revised arrangements — the top-level family assignment here follows the original description and current IUCN usage.

Pseudochalceus is a small, poorly known genus within the diverse Neotropical Characidae, and P. kyburzi remains the best-documented member. Molecular phylogenetics of the stevardiins is still being resolved, so the genus-level position may be revised as sampling improves. No subspecies are currently recognised.

Morphology

The Kyburz tetra is a slender, torpedo-shaped characid built for fast-flowing water. FishBase records a maximum standard length of 3 in, while hobbyist reports and the Steenfott Aquatics reference place adults at 3–4 in in total length. The body is laterally compressed but not particularly deep, with the typical characid profile: a forked tail, adipose fin, and a single dorsal fin set roughly at mid-body.

Coloration is silvery overall, with a reflective lateral band running from behind the operculum to the caudal peduncle; this band takes on a bluish or greenish metallic sheen under bright light. The fins are largely clear to faintly yellowish. Sexes are similar, though females are typically fuller-bodied when in spawning condition. There is no dramatic sexual dichromatism.

Habitat

Pseudochalceus kyburzi is native to Colombia and Venezuela, where it occurs in rivers and streams draining into the Orinoco basin and in Pacific coastal river systems. FishBase records its preferred microhabitat as fast-flowing rapids and streams with substrates of pebbles and submerged wood — the kind of highly oxygenated, turbulent environment typical of headwater and mid-elevation characids in this part of South America.

The species favours soft, acidic water: FishBase records temperatures of 72–77 °F and the species' association with structurally complex, fast-moving water points to well-oxygenated conditions with low dissolved organic load. Hobbyist accounts broaden the thermal range slightly to 73–81 °F, with pH 6.0–7.5 and soft to moderately hard water (2–12 dGH). Substrates in its natural microhabitats range from sand to gravel and rock, often with submerged wood providing cover. Medium-sized rivers and larger tributaries with open-water columns and sandy or rocky bottoms are also reported.

Feeding

In nature, the Kyburz tetra feeds on small aquatic invertebrates — a diet consistent with a fast-water species that encounters drifting insect larvae, small crustaceans, and other invertebrates carried by the current. It is likely an opportunistic feeder that also takes surface-fallen insects and, in slower marginal zones, bottom-associated invertebrates.

In the aquarium it adapts readily to a varied diet. High-quality flakes and small pellets form a practical staple, supplemented with frozen or live foods such as bloodworm, brine shrimp, and Daphnia to maintain condition and encourage spawning readiness. As an active midwater schooler it competes well at feeding time, and its size means it can handle slightly larger prey items than many small tetras.

Mating

Pseudochalceus kyburzi is presumed to be an egg-scatterer like the great majority of Characidae, broadcasting small, non-adhesive or lightly adhesive eggs among fine-leaved plants or over open substrate without forming a pair bond or providing parental care. No detailed behavioural account of courtship in the wild is available in the published literature, but the species' schooling habit and fast-water origins suggest a broadcast-spawning strategy in which a loose aggregation of fish spawns opportunistically.

In captivity the species is reported as rarely bred, and no detailed hobbyist accounts of courtship displays were located in accessible sources. Males in breeding condition may be expected to pursue ripe females persistently, as is typical for the family.

Breeding

Captive breeding of Pseudochalceus kyburzi is uncommon. The species is rarely seen in the hobby and has not been the subject of the kind of systematic breeding records that exist for popular tetras. Based on the characid norm and the species' presumed egg-scattering mode, breeding would be approached similarly to related fast-water tetras: a conditioned group, soft and slightly acidic warm water, fine-leaved plants or spawning mops, and removal of adults after spawning to prevent egg predation.

Eggs would be expected to hatch within two to four days at typical breeding temperatures, with fry initially requiring very fine first foods before graduating to baby brine shrimp and finely powdered prepared foods. The rarity of breeding reports means precise clutch sizes and incubation details remain undocumented in hobbyist literature.

In the aquarium

The Kyburz tetra is an active, social schooling fish that should be kept in groups of six or more. Its natural habitat in fast-flowing streams means it does best with good water movement and high dissolved oxygen — a power filter or spray bar directed across the surface suits it well. A tank of at least 31.5–39.5 in in length gives a proper group room to form and maintain a school.

Water parameters should reflect the species' soft, slightly acidic to neutral origins: temperature 73–81 °F, pH 6.0–7.5, soft to moderately hard. A planted tank with open central swimming space and some driftwood for structure mirrors the natural setting and keeps the fish confident. The Kyburz tetra is peaceful toward other species of similar size and temperament; it can be mixed with other active tetras, small rasboras, and similarly sized peaceful fish. It is rarely available in the trade but is reported to settle well once established and to reward patient keepers with its active, schooling behaviour.

Conservation

Pseudochalceus kyburzi is assessed as Data Deficient (DD) on the IUCN Red List (assessment date 10 October 2014, published in IUCN Red List version 2020.2). Data Deficient does not mean secure: it means that insufficient information exists to make a reliable assessment of extinction risk, and the true status could be anything from Least Concern to Critically Endangered pending better survey data.

Regionally, Ecuador has considered the species Endangered at a national level, citing habitat fragmentation driven by mining and agricultural expansion — pressures that affect the quality and connectivity of the fast-flowing stream habitats the species relies on. The combination of a restricted distribution centred on Colombia and Venezuela, a naturally specialised fast-water microhabitat, and ongoing land-use change in the Andes foothills and Pacific drainages makes the case for treating this species as conservation-sensitive, even in the absence of a full global assessment. Targeted surveys across its range are needed to underpin a revised Red List evaluation.
