Taxonomy & naming
Pseudochalceus longianalis was described by the French-born ichthyologist Jacques Géry in 1972, in a paper published in the Revue Suisse de Zoologie (volume 79, pages 931–945) that treated several poorly known characoids from Colombia and Ecuador. The original description characterised the species on the basis of an elongated anal fin bearing 28–30 rays, a lateral-line scale count of 33–36, and distinctive black spotting on the head, body, and fins — a combination of characters that separates it clearly from its congeners.
The genus Pseudochalceus was established for a small group of Colombian and Ecuadorian characins that had been confused with superficially similar genera until Géry clarified their relationships. Catalog of Fishes (Eschmeyer, CAS) records Pseudochalceus longianalis Géry, 1972 as the valid name; the authority is not placed in parentheses because the species has remained in Pseudochalceus since its original description. Placement within the broader family Characidae has been debated in light of molecular phylogenies that have reshuffled many characin lineages, but Pseudochalceus is currently retained in Characidae.
Morphology
Pseudochalceus longianalis is a slender, moderately compressed characin reaching a maximum recorded standard length of 3 in. The body is elongate rather than deep-bodied, typical of a mid-water schooling fish. The most distinctive feature — and the one that lends the species its name — is the anal fin, which is conspicuously elongated with 28–30 rays, a count well above that of most similarly sized characins.
The colour pattern includes scattered black spots or blotches on the head, body, and fins, giving the fish a dappled or speckled appearance against an otherwise silvery ground colour. This spotting is noted in the original description as a diagnostic character. Precise details of finnage beyond the anal fin, and of lateral-line scale arrangement (33–36 scales), were recorded by Géry and serve as the primary meristic criteria for identification. Sexual dimorphism, if any, has not been formally documented in the literature.
Habitat
The species inhabits the coastal rivers of the Pacific versant of Colombia and Ecuador, drainages that flow westward from the Andes through the lowland Chocó rainforest to the Pacific coast. In Ecuador, the known range spans the Chocó coastal rivers from the Mira basin in the north to the Catamayo-Chira basin in the south — a linear extent of roughly 1,0 mi of coastline, though actual occurrence within that range is patchy and tied to suitable habitat.
Microhabitat associations described in the literature include undercut banks and areas with submerged woody debris — classic refugia for smaller characins in lowland Neotropical rivers. The streams are soft and acidic, with reported water parameters of pH 6.0–7.0 and temperatures of 73–79 °F (73–79 °F), reflecting the warm, low-mineral conditions of the Chocó lowland. These rivers sit within one of the most biodiverse and most threatened freshwater ichthyological zones in South America.
Feeding
Pseudochalceus longianalis is characterised as planktivorous and carnivorous, with a natural diet of small aquatic insects and invertebrates. The FishBase trophic level of 2.9 places it near the lower end of carnivory, consistent with a diet dominated by small invertebrates rather than other fishes.
In the aquarium, the closely related behaviour of congeners and the general ecological guild it occupies suggest it would accept a range of small live and frozen foods — daphnia, artemia, and small chironomid larvae — as well as quality small-particle dry foods. No detailed feeding studies specific to this species have been published, and aquarium records are essentially absent from the literature.
Mating
No courtship or mating behaviour has been documented for Pseudochalceus longianalis specifically. On the basis of its family placement and the reproductive biology common to characins of similar ecology, it is presumed to be an egg-scattering open spawner with no pair bond or parental investment. Males of schooling characins typically display to females through body posturing and fin extension; the elongated anal fin of this species may play a role in intraspecific signalling, though this remains unconfirmed.
Breeding has not been recorded in captivity, and published accounts from the wild are absent. The species' rarity in the trade means that captive observations are effectively non-existent.
Breeding
Captive breeding of Pseudochalceus longianalis has not been documented. Based on the reproductive strategies shared by most Neotropical characins of comparable size and ecology, the species is presumed to deposit adhesive or semi-adhesive eggs among fine-leaved vegetation or other submerged structure, with no parental care and no nest construction. Eggs and larvae would be at risk of predation from the adults in a confined aquarium setting.
If breeding were attempted, the conditions that characterise the species' natural habitat — soft, slightly acidic water in the pH 6.0–7.0 range, temperatures around 75–79 °F (75–79 °F), and the presence of fine-leaved plants or dense structure — would form the logical starting point. The scarcity of captive specimens makes any such attempt unlikely in the near term.
In the aquarium
Pseudochalceus longianalis is very rarely encountered in the ornamental trade and is essentially unknown in the hobby. It is not kept or bred commercially and would represent a specialist acquisition if it appeared at all. Any specimens that entered captivity would presumably be wild-caught from Ecuadorian or Colombian rivers, making their husbandry a conservation-relevant undertaking.
The fish's natural habitat — warm, soft, acidic lowland streams in heavily vegetated Chocó forest — provides the clearest guide to aquarium conditions: temperatures of 73–79 °F (73–79 °F), pH 6.0–7.0, low to moderate hardness, subdued lighting, and ample cover from fine-leaved plants and woody décor. As a presumed schooling species it would benefit from the company of conspecifics. Its small size (under 3 in) and apparent planktivorous diet suggest compatibility with other small, peaceful characins from similar biotopes.
Conservation
Pseudochalceus longianalis is assessed as Vulnerable (VU) on the IUCN Red List under criterion B1ab(iii), assessed on 8 October 2014. The B1 criterion indicates a restricted extent of occurrence, and the 'ab(iii)' qualifier reflects ongoing decline in the quality of its habitat. Ecuador additionally lists the species as Endangered at the national level, a stricter assessment that reflects the severity of pressures observed within that country's portion of its range.
The principal threats are habitat fragmentation and degradation driven by small-scale gold mining and agricultural expansion in the Chocó lowlands — activities that degrade water quality, alter stream morphology, and eliminate the riparian forest cover that these fish depend on. The Ecuadorian Chocó holds some of the highest freshwater fish endemism in the Americas, and species with restricted ranges and specific microhabitat requirements like P. longianalis are disproportionately vulnerable to land-use change. Its near-absence from the ornamental trade means that no captive insurance population exists.
