Pseudochalceus lineatus is a slender, schooling characid from the clear, fast-flowing Pacific-slope rivers of Colombia and Ecuador — one of relatively few freshwater fishes endemic to the Chocó-Darién biogeographic province. At six to eight centimetres it is a modestly sized but active mid-water species, its silver flanks crossed by a prominent dark lateral stripe that gives rise to both common name and specific epithet. It remains uncommon in the aquarium hobby despite its striking coloration and adaptability to moderately soft, slightly acidic water, and was assessed as Least Concern by the IUCN in 2022.

Taxonomy & naming

Pseudochalceus lineatus was described by the Austrian ichthyologist Rudolf Kner in 1863, with the type locality recorded as the Río Toachi near Santo Domingo de Los Colorados, Pichincha Province, Ecuador — a Pacific-slope tributary of the Río Esmeraldas drainage. Eschmeyer's Catalog of Fishes (CAS) recognises the valid name as Pseudochalceus lineatus Kner, 1863 and places the genus within the subfamily Rhoadsiinae of the family Acestrorhamphidae, a small Neotropical group allied to the wider Characidae radiation. The top-level family designation used throughout this atlas follows standard hobbyist and FishBase convention, which retains these genera within Characidae sensu lato.

Pseudochalceus is a monotypic genus — P. lineatus is its sole species and is the genus' type species by monotypy, as recorded by CAS. The name Pseudochalceus combines the Greek pseudo (false) with chalceus, a genus name derived from the Greek for bronze or copper, suggesting a superficial resemblance to Chalceus that the describer wished to distinguish. The specific epithet lineatus is Latin for 'lined' or 'striped', a direct reference to the bold dark lateral band.

Morphology

Pseudochalceus lineatus is a moderately elongate, laterally compressed characid reaching approximately 2.5–3 in standard length. The body form is typical of a schooling mid-water species — streamlined and fusiform, built for sustained movement in flowing water rather than explosive bursts or benthic foraging. The fins are unremarkable in shape, with a small adipose fin present as is characteristic of characids.

The most distinctive feature is a well-defined, dark horizontal stripe running from the opercle to the caudal peduncle, set against bright silver flanks that reflect light strongly in flowing water. A complementary pale zone above the stripe gives the fish a clean, graphic appearance. The belly is paler still, and the fins are generally hyaline to lightly pigmented. Sexual dimorphism is subtle at best; females are reportedly plumper in the body when in breeding condition, but the sexes are difficult to distinguish by colour alone.

Habitat

The species occupies clear, fast-flowing streams and medium-sized rivers of the Pacific coastal slope, recorded from several major drainages in Ecuador (Santiago-Cayapas, Esmeraldas, Guayas, and El Oro basins) and extending north into the Chocó region of Colombia. The type locality, the Río Toachi, is a montane-foothill river that drains the western Andes onto the Pacific coastal plain, and the broader distribution falls within the Chocó-Darién ecoregion — one of the most biodiverse yet understudied freshwater provinces in South America.

Within these rivers P. lineatus favours benthopelagic positions in moderate to strong current, over rocky or gravel substrates in tropical lowland reaches. Water chemistry reflects the soft, slightly acidic conditions typical of Pacific-slope Andean runoff: pH in the range of approximately 6.0–7.0 and low to moderate hardness (to perhaps 12 °dH), with temperatures inferred from related species and regional data at roughly 73–79 °F. The species forms schools in flowing-water habitats rather than dense vegetation, consistent with its open-water, active morphology.

Feeding

Pseudochalceus lineatus is carnivorous to omnivorous, feeding primarily on small invertebrates and insects in the wild. In fast-flowing Pacific-slope rivers its diet likely centres on aquatic invertebrate drift — insect larvae, small crustaceans, and surface-fallen terrestrial insects — consistent with the feeding ecology of similarly sized characids in comparable Neotropical river systems.

In the aquarium the species accepts a range of prepared foods. Live and frozen foods such as Daphnia, brine shrimp, and bloodworm are taken readily and help maintain condition. A varied diet combining a quality small pellet or flake base with regular live or frozen offerings is recommended, particularly to bring fish into breeding condition.

Mating

Pseudochalceus lineatus is presumed to be an egg-scattering open spawner in the wild, following the general pattern of similarly sized characids from flowing-water habitats. Spawning in Pacific-slope species is often correlated with seasonal increases in river flow during the rainy season, which likely acts as a trigger for reproductive activity by altering water temperature, conductivity, and current speed.

No detailed observations of natural courtship behaviour have been published for this species. The schooling habit in fast-flowing water suggests that spawning may occur in open water over clean gravel or among fine-leaved vegetation in slower marginal zones, with males pursuing females briefly before eggs and milt are released simultaneously into the current. No parental care is expected — as is typical for characids of this type.

Breeding

Captive breeding of Pseudochalceus lineatus has not been widely documented in the hobby literature, and detailed accounts are absent from the sources available for this species. Based on the breeding biology of closely related characids and the species' ecology, aquarists attempting to spawn it should condition a group of well-fed adults and provide a spacious tank with good flow. Fine-leaved plants such as Java moss or synthetic spawning mops placed in a moderate current offer suitable spawning sites for adhesive or semi-adhesive eggs.

A seasonal simulation — a period of slightly cooler temperatures followed by a gradual warming and increased water changes to simulate the onset of the rainy season — may encourage spawning. Eggs and adults should be separated promptly, as characids of this type show no parental care and will consume eggs opportunistically. Incubation time and fry requirements have not been published; first foods for related species typically include infusoria or commercial liquid fry food followed by newly hatched brine shrimp.

In the aquarium

Pseudochalceus lineatus is an active, schooling species that requires a well-oxygenated aquarium with a meaningful current — a powerhead or spray-bar return directed along the tank length will suit it far better than still water. A tank of at least 35.5–39.5 in in length is appropriate for a group; the species should not be kept singly or in very small numbers, as schooling behaviour is central to its welfare and the animals are clearly stressed when isolated.

Water chemistry should be soft and slightly acidic to neutral, following the Pacific-slope river conditions of its native range: pH 6.0–7.0, low to moderate hardness, and temperatures of 73–79 °F. Good filtration and regular water changes are important to maintain the high water quality and oxygen levels the species expects from fast-flowing Andean-foothill rivers. It is a peaceful species appropriate for a community with other active, similarly sized fish that tolerate or prefer similar cool, well-oxygenated conditions. The species remains uncommon in the hobby and is rarely available commercially; captive-bred specimens are preferable to wild-caught wherever they can be sourced.

Conservation

Pseudochalceus lineatus was assessed as Least Concern (LC) on the IUCN Red List in 2022, reflecting a wide distribution across multiple Pacific-slope drainages in Ecuador and Colombia and a population resilience rating consistent with a doubling time of less than 15 months. The broad distributional footprint across several major river basins — Santiago-Cayapas, Esmeraldas, Guayas, and El Oro in Ecuador, and the Chocó region in Colombia — provides a buffer against localised extinction that more narrowly endemic species in the same region lack.

Nevertheless, the 2022 assessment noted local declines linked to habitat degradation driven primarily by deforestation in the Chocó-Darién region, one of the most heavily impacted biogeographic provinces in the Neotropics. Riparian forest clearance degrades water quality, destabilises stream banks, and silts over the clean gravel substrates this species depends on. The Least Concern status should not be read as an absence of threat: it reflects current population extent relative to threshold criteria rather than stability of habitat quality across the range.
