Pyrrhulina filamentosa is a slender, surface-oriented characiform of the Atlantic coastal drainages between the Amazon and Orinoco basins, where it haunts the shaded margins of slow, soft, acidic blackwater streams. Reaching just over 4.5 in, it belongs to a genus of small lebiasinids celebrated for an unusual breeding strategy in which the male guards adhesive eggs attached to the underside of emergent leaves or other surfaces near the waterline — a behaviour strikingly at odds with the scatter-and-forget habit of most of its nearest relatives.

Taxonomy & naming

Pyrrhulina filamentosa was described by Achille Valenciennes in 1847 in the monumental *Histoire naturelle des poissons* co-authored with Georges Cuvier, the description appearing at page 535 accompanied by Plate 589 of volume 19. The type locality is Suriname, and the holotype is held at the Muséum national d'Histoire naturelle, Paris (MNHN 0000-4408), as catalogued in Bertin's 1948 type list. Eschmeyer's Catalog of Fishes records the valid name as *Pyrrhulina filamentosa* Valenciennes, 1847.

The genus *Pyrrhulina* Valenciennes, 1846 belongs to the family Lebiasinidae and is broadly distributed across tropical South America. Lebiasinidae is a family of small, elongate characiforms — sometimes loosely grouped with the pencil-fishes — defined in part by the reduced or absent adipose fin and the strongly asymmetric caudal fin in many species. *Pyrrhulina* itself contains roughly 20 accepted species; *P. filamentosa* is one of the larger members and is distinguished from its congeners by a combination of meristic characters and, in the male, an elongated filamentous extension of the dorsal fin rays that gives the species its name.

Morphology

Pyrrhulina filamentosa reaches a maximum standard length of approximately 4.5 in, making it one of the larger species in its genus. The body is elongate and moderately compressed, with the dorsal profile somewhat flatter than the ventral — an adaptation to a life spent close to the surface. The mouth is terminal and directed upward, suited for taking prey from at or just below the water's surface.

Sexual dimorphism is present and most evident in the dorsal fin: males develop elongated, filamentous extensions on the anterior dorsal-fin rays that give the species its specific epithet *filamentosa*. Ground coloration is brownish to olive dorsally, fading to paler sides often marked with a dark lateral stripe; the fins are typically translucent with variable orange or reddish tinting in breeding males. As with most Pyrrhulina, colour intensity is strongly influenced by mood and condition.

Habitat

Pyrrhulina filamentosa is distributed across the Atlantic coastal river systems lying between the Amazon and Orinoco drainages — a region of Guiana Shield-influenced lowland forest streams that includes the rivers of Suriname, French Guiana, and adjacent northern Brazil. It inhabits slow-moving to near-stagnant blackwater streams, forest pools, and flooded margin habitats where submerged and emergent vegetation is dense.

The water chemistry of these habitats is consistently warm, soft, and acidic: FishBase records the species at 73–82 °F and pH 5.8–7.5, reflecting the tannin-stained, ion-poor blackwaters typical of the Guiana coastal belt. The surface and near-surface zone is where the species spends most of its time, and it is strongly associated with areas of overhanging or floating vegetation that provide both shade and the leaf surfaces used in spawning.

Feeding

Pyrrhulina filamentosa is an omnivore with a strong predatory bias toward terrestrial invertebrates. FishBase identifies terrestrial insects as essential dietary components, reflecting the species' lifestyle at the water surface beneath forest canopy where invertebrate fall-in from overhanging vegetation is reliable and frequent. Small aquatic invertebrates, larvae, and other small surface prey are taken as opportunity allows.

In the aquarium the species adapts readily to standard aquatic foods but performs best when the diet includes substantial live or frozen invertebrate prey — fruitflies (*Drosophila*), crickets, waxworms, and similar surface foods best mimic the natural input of terrestrial insects. Frozen bloodworm, Daphnia, and similar items round out the diet. The strongly upward-directed mouth means bottom-sinking foods will largely be ignored; surface-floating or slow-sinking preparations work best.

Mating

Pyrrhulina filamentosa employs a substrate-guarding spawning strategy that distinguishes the genus from most other small characiforms. Rather than scattering eggs freely among vegetation and abandoning them, the male selects and defends a spawning site on the underside of an emergent leaf, an overhanging plant surface, or in the aquarium, often the glass wall near the waterline. The male courts females using fin displays and colour intensification, with the elongated dorsal filaments contributing to visual signalling.

Once a receptive female is induced to spawn, the pair position themselves inverted beneath the chosen surface and deposit adhesive eggs directly onto it. The male then takes sole responsibility for guarding the eggs, fanning them and chasing away intruders, while the female departs. This male-only guarding arrangement is characteristic of the genus and represents an unusual parental-investment pattern within Lebiasinidae.

Breeding

In the aquarium, breeding Pyrrhulina filamentosa requires replication of the surface-spawning conditions the species uses in the wild. A well-conditioned pair or small group can be moved to a species-only tank, or spawning can occur in a community setting if sufficient cover is provided. Broad-leaved floating plants such as Amazon frogbit (*Limnobium*) or banana plant are ideal spawning surfaces; in their absence the species will use the underside of cover glass or filter equipment near the waterline.

Eggs are adhesive and deposited in small clusters on the underside of the chosen surface at water temperatures in the 75–81 °F range. Incubation is brief — typically around 24–36 hours at these temperatures. The male guards the eggs actively and should be left undisturbed during this period; once the eggs hatch and the fry become free-swimming, parental care ends and the adults should be removed to prevent predation. Fry are small and require infusoria or commercial liquid fry food initially before moving on to newly hatched brine shrimp and micro-worm as they grow.

In the aquarium

Pyrrhulina filamentosa is an engaging surface fish for a well-planted blackwater or Guiana-themed biotope aquarium. It does best in soft, slightly acidic water (pH 5.8–7.0) at 75–82 °F, with a dark substrate, tannin-stained water from added leaf litter or driftwood, and substantial floating or emergent plant cover to provide the shade and spawning surfaces the species uses in nature. Strong surface currents should be avoided; gentle filtration with a sponge filter is appropriate.

The species is best kept in a small group of four to six, which distributes aggression and encourages the display behaviour between males. It is peaceful toward dissimilar-sized fish but can be predatory toward very small tankmates; mid- and lower-water species that do not compete for the surface zone — pencil-fishes, small Corydoras, dwarf cichlids of matching biotope origin — make natural companions. Like most Pyrrhulina, the fish spends most of its time near the water surface and benefits from an aquarium with a tight-fitting lid, as it will jump if startled.

Conservation

Pyrrhulina filamentosa is assessed as Least Concern on the IUCN Red List, with the most recent assessment confirmed in October 2020. The species' distribution across the Atlantic coastal drainages of the Guiana Shield — a region with relatively intact forest cover — supports a stable population across a reasonably broad range.

While Least Concern status suggests no immediate threat at the species level, the lowland blackwater habitats it occupies are regionally subject to deforestation, gold mining, and agricultural conversion, all of which degrade water quality and reduce the marginal vegetation critical for surface-spawning lebiasinids. The species has no documented captive-breeding programme of significance, and trade specimens are typically wild-collected, though the low volume of hobby interest means collection pressure is not currently identified as a concern.
