Rhabdalestes aeratis is a small, slender African tetra reaching just over 2 in standard length, described in 2005 from Lake Tumba in the Middle Congo River basin of the Democratic Republic of Congo — the first record of the genus Rhabdalestes from that part of the Congo drainage. It is distinguished by a striking golden-bronze reflective sheen overlain by dark brown chromatophores, a complete lateral line with 27–28 pored scales, and 17–19 gill rakers on the lower limb of the first gill arch. Assessed as Data Deficient by the IUCN in 2009, it remains poorly known in both science and the hobby.

Taxonomy & naming

Rhabdalestes aeratis was described by Melanie L. J. Stiassny and Sally A. Schaefer in 2005 in the journal Ichthyological Exploration of Freshwaters (volume 16, number 3, pages 271–278). The type locality is Lake Tumba near Irebu, in the Équateur province of the Democratic Republic of Congo. Eschmeyer's Catalog of Fishes (CAS) records the valid name as Rhabdalestes aeratis Stiassny & Schaefer, 2005. Because the species was described directly in Rhabdalestes and has not been reassigned, the authority appears without parentheses.

The publication was significant in extending the range of the genus Rhabdalestes into the Middle Congo River basin; previously the genus was known only from more westerly drainages in West and Central Africa. Rhabdalestes belongs to the family Alestidae, the African tetras, a group of characiforms that radiate across sub-Saharan Africa and include such familiar aquarium fishes as the Congo tetra (Phenacogrammus interruptus) and the African moon tetra (Bathyaethiops caudomaculatus). Within Alestidae, Rhabdalestes is a genus of small, elongate species.

Morphology

Rhabdalestes aeratis is a slender, small-bodied fish with a maximum recorded standard length of 2 in. The body is elongate and laterally compressed, consistent with the general Rhabdalestes body plan. The lateral line is complete, bearing 27–28 pored scales. The anal fin carries 14–15 branched rays. The lower limb of the first gill arch bears 17–19 gill rakers — a count that helps distinguish this species from related congeners.

The most immediately striking feature is the coloration: the body displays a golden-bronze reflective sheen, described as metallic and coppery, that is overlain by dark brown chromatophores giving the fish a finely stippled or dusted appearance. The epithet aeratis refers directly to this bronzed quality. Beyond these characters, detailed meristic and morphometric comparisons were provided in the original description to distinguish it from the other species of the genus known at the time.

Habitat

The type locality of Rhabdalestes aeratis is Lake Tumba, a large, shallow, forested lake near the town of Irebu in the Équateur province of the Democratic Republic of Congo. Lake Tumba is part of the Middle Congo River basin, connected to the main Congo River by the Ubangi–Congo drainage network and characterized by black, tannin-rich waters typical of the Congo basin's flooded forests and lake margins.

FishBase classifies the species as benthopelagic, occupying middle-water zones in this tropical freshwater environment. The broader Congo basin context suggests waters that are warm, soft, and acidic — typical of the central Congo basin's humic lakes — though no specific water-chemistry parameters for the species' microhabitat have been recorded in the available literature. Data on depth preferences and seasonal habitat use remain largely unrecorded.

Feeding

No feeding data have been recorded specifically for Rhabdalestes aeratis in the scientific literature. As a member of Alestidae, it can be inferred to be a generalist carnivore or omnivore in the manner typical of small alestid tetras — likely consuming small invertebrates, insect larvae, and other zooplankton-sized prey in the water column and at the surface film.

In the aquarium, by analogy with other small alestids, it would be expected to accept fine-grade dry foods such as micro-pellets and crushed flake alongside frozen and live foods including Cyclops, Daphnia, and baby brine shrimp. Given the scarcity of published data, any specific dietary claims beyond the family-level generalization would be speculative.

Mating

No mating or courtship observations have been published for Rhabdalestes aeratis. Like other members of Alestidae, the species is expected to be an egg-scattering open spawner with external fertilization and no parental care — the reproductive mode that characterizes the great majority of alestid tetras.

In comparable small alestids, males typically pursue females through fine-leaved vegetation or open water, with spawning occurring in bursts during which adhesive eggs are scattered among plants or over the substrate. Whether R. aeratis shows any notable courtship coloration or behaviour beyond typical alestid patterns is unknown.

Breeding

No captive or wild breeding data have been recorded for Rhabdalestes aeratis. The species has not established itself in the ornamental trade and is not known to have been bred in aquaria. Based on alestid family biology generally, breeding would be expected to follow the egg-scattering pattern: adhesive eggs deposited among fine-leaved plants or over a soft substrate, hatching after several days at tropical temperatures, with the adults offering no parental care and readily consuming their own eggs and fry.

Generalized guidance for breeding African tetras of this type suggests conditioning adults on live and frozen foods, using soft, slightly acidic to neutral water (around pH 6.0–7.5) at 75–81 °F, and providing spawning mops or Java moss as egg-deposition sites. These parameters are offered as a family-level baseline; no species-specific breeding data are available for R. aeratis.

In the aquarium

Rhabdalestes aeratis is essentially unknown in the ornamental hobby. It has not been imported in any significant quantity and is absent from mainstream fishkeeping literature and trade catalogues. Any aquarium husbandry notes for this species would therefore be inferred from its family membership and the conditions of its native habitat rather than from direct hobbyist experience.

By analogy with other small alestids from the Congo basin, a biotope-style aquarium with warm, soft, and slightly acidic water, subdued lighting, tannin-stained water from dried leaves or alder cones, and a planted setup with open swimming space would approximate natural conditions. A group rather than a single specimen is advisable for any small schooling characiform. Given the lack of trade presence and wild-population data concerns, collection for the hobby would require careful evaluation of its conservation status as further information becomes available.

Conservation

Rhabdalestes aeratis was assessed as Data Deficient (DD) by the IUCN Red List in 2009. The Data Deficient category reflects a lack of sufficient information to make a direct or indirect assessment of extinction risk — it does not imply that the species is unthreatened, only that the available data are inadequate. Given the species' restriction to Lake Tumba and the Middle Congo basin, and the broader pressures of deforestation, artisanal fishing, and habitat degradation affecting Congo basin wetlands, the absence of a formal threat assessment should not be read as an indication of security.

Lake Tumba and the surrounding Tumba–Lediima region are part of one of the largest tropical freshwater wetland complexes in Africa, and portions of the area have been recognized for their conservation value. However, ground-level survey data for small-bodied fishes in the system remain sparse, and the status of R. aeratis populations has not been revisited since the original 2009 assessment. Updated surveys and population estimates would be necessary before the species could be reclassified.
