Rhabdalestes rhodesiensis was originally described by M. A. Ricardo-Bertram in 1943 from material collected in Rhodesia, the colonial-era territory that is now Zimbabwe. Eschmeyer's Catalog of Fishes (Fricke, Eschmeyer & Fong) lists the valid combination as Rhabdalestes rhodesiensis (Ricardo-Bertram, 1943), with the parenthetical authority indicating that the species was not originally placed in the genus Rhabdalestes when first described.
The genus Rhabdalestes Hoedeman & Nijssen, 1958 belongs to the family Alestidae, the African tetras — a clade of characiforms endemic to sub-Saharan Africa and the Nile basin. Alestidae contains some 120 currently recognised species spread across 21 genera, ranging in size from small schooling species like Rhabdalestes to the large predatory tigerfish (Hydrocynus). The family is the Old World counterpart of the Characidae of the Americas, with both groups descended from a common Gondwanan ancestor, and many alestids replicate the body plan, shoaling behaviour, and diet of familiar Neotropical tetras.
Within Alestidae, Rhabdalestes is a small genus of slim, fusiform characins distinguished by a combination of a slender body, relatively large eye, and the presence of a well-developed adipose fin. The epithet rhodesiensis is a Latinised adjective referring to Rhodesia, the historical name of the territory where the type specimens were obtained — now Zimbabwe.
