The valid name is rendered with parenthetical authority — (Pellegrin, 1921) — indicating that the species was originally placed in a different genus before being transferred to Rhabdalestes. Eschmeyer's Catalog of Fishes (CAS) is the governing authority for the current placement.

The genus Rhabdalestes belongs to the family Alestidae, the African tetras, a clade distributed across sub-Saharan Africa and most diverse in West and Central Africa. Rhabdalestes is a small genus of slender, elongate alestids; the species are superficially similar to one another and are distinguished primarily by meristic and morphometric characters.
