The Okavango Robber is a small African tetra of the family Alestidae inhabiting the Okavango river system of southern Africa, including the broad, seasonally flooded wetlands of the Okavango Delta in Botswana. Described by the American ichthyologist Henry W. Fowler in 1935, Rhabdalestes maunensis is one of the smaller alestid tetras in this drainage and has attracted modest attention from the aquarium trade, though it remains little documented compared with the more conspicuous predatory robbers of the same family.

Taxonomy & naming

Rhabdalestes maunensis was described by Henry W. Fowler in 1935, the type locality associated with the Maun area of the Okavango system in what is now Botswana. The original description placed the species in a different genus, and the parenthetical authority — (Fowler, 1935) — reflects this subsequent transfer to Rhabdalestes. Eschmeyer's Catalog of Fishes (Catalog of Fishes, California Academy of Sciences) is the governing authority for the valid name Rhabdalestes maunensis (Fowler, 1935).

The genus Rhabdalestes belongs to the family Alestidae, the African tetras, a diverse family spread across sub-Saharan Africa and including both small, peaceful schooling species and larger predatory robber-tetras. The genus epithet Rhabdalestes is formed from Greek roots meaning 'rod' and 'robber' or 'thief', in reference to the slender, elongate body form characteristic of the group. The specific epithet maunensis refers to Maun, the principal settlement at the southern gateway to the Okavango Delta, near which the type material was collected.

Morphology

Rhabdalestes maunensis is a slender, fusiform small tetra with the streamlined build typical of the genus — an elongate body, a forked caudal fin, and relatively large eyes suited to life in open, well-lit water. Published size data are sparse for this species; as a small alestid, it is expected to reach only a few centimetres in total length, in line with other small members of the genus.

Like other alestids it carries adipose and pectoral fins in the typical characiform arrangement, with the adipose fin positioned between the dorsal and caudal. Detailed meristic data from the original description (lateral-line scale counts, fin-ray formulae) are not reproduced here due to data availability, but the general facies — a silver-sided, small-scaled tetra with a lightly forked tail — is consistent with the broader Rhabdalestes group. Coloration in life is not well documented in the accessible literature; preserved specimens are generally silvery with darker dorsal surfaces.

Habitat

Rhabdalestes maunensis is distributed in the Okavango river system of southern Africa — one of the world's largest inland delta systems, originating in the Angolan Highlands and terminating in the Kalahari Basin of Botswana. The Okavango Delta is a UNESCO World Heritage Site characterised by a mosaic of permanent channels, seasonal floodplains, papyrus swamps, and lagoons fed by annual floodwaters peaking in the dry season.

The species occupies the warm, generally clear to lightly turbid waters of this system. The Okavango's permanent channels run over sandy and muddy substrates fringed by papyrus and reed beds, while the seasonal floodplain fills with shallow, heavily vegetated water each year. Water temperatures across the system range widely with season but are typically warm for the months when the delta is most productive. The species' presence in the Maun area suggests it is associated with the lower, more permanent reaches of the system.

Feeding

Detailed dietary studies for Rhabdalestes maunensis are not available in the accessible literature. Specific captive breeding records for Rhabdalestes maunensis are not documented in the literature available for this article. The general alestid breeding pattern is egg-scattering over plants or open substrate, with small, non-adhesive or mildly adhesive eggs and no parental investment — parents will consume eggs and newly hatched fry if not separated.

Rhabdalestes maunensis is occasionally available to specialist aquarists interested in African river tetras, though it is not a mainstream hobby species and detailed husbandry accounts are scarce. As a small, slender alestid from a warm, well-oxygenated floodplain system, it is best kept in a group of six or more in a tank with open swimming space and good water movement.

Water conditions should reflect the Okavango system: warm (approximately 75–82 °F), with a neutral to slightly alkaline pH and moderate hardness. The Okavango's permanent channels are typically clear with low to moderate conductivity, so clean, well-filtered water with regular partial changes suits the species. A planted tank with open lanes for swimming, some surface current, and a soft sandy substrate would approximate the natural environment. Tankmates should be similarly sized, peaceful African tetras or small catfish; the species' modest size makes it vulnerable to predation by larger fish. Data for diet, tankmate compatibility, and breeding in captivity are sparse for this species specifically.

Conservation

Rhabdalestes maunensis has not been evaluated by the IUCN Red List; no formal threat assessment is available for the species. The Okavango river system, while relatively intact compared with many African river basins, faces ongoing pressures including upstream water abstraction in Angola, agricultural expansion, and the potential impacts of climate variability on the seasonal flood pulse that drives the entire ecology of the Delta.

The Okavango Delta itself is protected as a Ramsar Wetland of International Importance and a UNESCO World Heritage Site, which provides some baseline protection for the fish communities within it. However, the conservation status of individual small-bodied species such as R. maunensis in the broader Okavango catchment remains incompletely understood.
