Serrapinnus malabarbai is a miniature characid described from the headwaters of the Rio das Mortes in the upper Rio Araguaia drainage of Mato Grosso, Brazil. Known from the original 2018 description, it stands out within its genus through a striking sexual dichromatism — red-bodied males and yellow-bodied females — set against the conspicuous dark lateral stripe that runs from eye to caudal fin characteristic of the group. Like other members of Serrapinnus it is a tiny schooling fish, likely sharing the leaf-litter and fine-leaved vegetation microhabitats typical of headwater streams across the South American interior.

Taxonomy & naming

Serrapinnus malabarbai was formally described by Fernando C. Jerep, Fábio Dagosta, and Willian M. Ohara in a 2018 paper published in Copeia (volume 106, issue 1, pp. 180–187). The type locality is in the headwaters of the Rio das Mortes within the upper Rio Araguaia drainage, Mato Grosso state, Brazil. The species is placed in the genus Serrapinnus, a group of miniature characids distributed across drainages of central and northern South America, belonging to the family Characidae.

The specific epithet malabarbai is a patronym honouring a Brazilian ichthyologist; the exact dedicatee is recorded in the original description. Serrapinnus as a genus is diagnosed by a combination of miniaturisation, a reduced dentition with few premaxillary teeth, and a prominent horizontal stripe along the flank. S. malabarbai fits this profile and is distinguished from known congeners by its low dorsal-fin ray count (eight branched rays), three premaxillary teeth, and the marked red-and-yellow sexual dichromatism absent or less developed in related species.

At the time of writing the species has not been assigned an IUCN Red List assessment and does not yet appear on FishBase, reflecting its recent formal description from a limited collecting record.

Morphology

S. malabarbai is a miniature tetra, consistent with the small size typical of Serrapinnus; on the basis of congener measurements the adults are estimated in the range of roughly 1 in standard length. The body is slender and laterally compressed, as in other members of the genus, with a dorsal fin bearing eight branched rays — a lower count than in several close relatives and one of the characters used to distinguish the species.

The most distinctive feature is a conspicuous dark horizontal stripe extending from the eye to the base of the caudal fin, a trait shared across the genus but well developed in this species. Sexual dichromatism is pronounced: males are described as red-bodied, females as yellow-bodied, a degree of colour difference that exceeds what is typically seen in Serrapinnus and provides a ready field and aquarium character. The dentition is reduced, with three teeth on the premaxilla, consistent with the miniaturised jaw apparatus found across the genus.

Habitat

The type locality falls within the headwater zone of the Rio das Mortes in Mato Grosso, part of the upper Araguaia drainage of central Brazil. Headwater streams in this region are generally small, shallow, and seasonally variable, often flowing through cerrado or gallery-forest vegetation with substrates of sand, leaf litter, and organic debris. Fine-leaved aquatic plants, submerged roots, and marginal vegetation are characteristic features of such environments.

At the collecting site S. malabarbai was found in syntopy with Hyphessobrycon cf. vilmae, with both species occurring in mixed shoals — a detail from the original description that indicates a shared use of the water column and the fine-structured microhabitats typical of miniature characids. Water conditions in cerrado headwaters are generally soft and slightly acidic to neutral, with temperatures following seasonal ambient patterns typical of the Brazilian interior. Specific measured parameters for the type locality are not available in the published record.

Feeding

No specific dietary data have been published for Serrapinnus malabarbai. Based on genus-level and family-level patterns, it is expected to be an opportunistic micropredator feeding on small aquatic invertebrates and zooplankton — the typical foraging mode of miniature characids in headwater stream environments. Chironomid larvae, small crustaceans, and other invertebrates in the soft substrates and water column of leaf-litter streams form the likely staple.

In the aquarium, congeners and comparably sized miniature tetras accept prepared micro-pellets and fine flake, along with small live and frozen foods such as Artemia nauplii, micro-worms, and Daphnia. A varied diet including live or frozen items is likely to support good condition and bring out the red-yellow colour dichromatism in sexually mature fish.

Mating

No breeding observations have been published for S. malabarbai in captivity or the wild. As a member of Serrapinnus and the broader Characidae, the species is expected to be an egg-scattering, open spawner with no parental care — the generalised reproductive mode of the family. Males displaying the red colouration are likely to engage in visual courtship competition, and the pronounced sexual dichromatism suggests mate choice based on male colour intensity is relevant.

Spawning in similarly sized miniature characids typically involves pursuit of females by males into fine-leaved vegetation or over soft substrates, with adhesive or semi-adhesive eggs deposited among plant material or debris. Adults are expected to show no parental investment and will consume eggs given access.

Breeding

Captive breeding records for Serrapinnus malabarbai are absent from the published literature, and the species is not established in the ornamental trade at present. By analogy with other Serrapinnus and small characids of comparable size, breeding in captivity would follow the standard egg-scattering approach: a well-conditioned pair or small group placed in a mature, well-planted aquarium with soft, slightly acidic water and fine-leaved plant clusters or a spawning mop.

Eggs would be expected to be small and adhesive, attached to plant leaves or deposited among fine debris, hatching within a few days at tropical temperatures. Fry at hatching would be extremely small, requiring infusoria or commercial liquid fry food as initial nutrition before graduating to Artemia nauplii. As with most miniature characids, removing eggs or spawning medium to a separate rearing container immediately after spawning prevents predation by the adults.

In the aquarium

Serrapinnus malabarbai is not currently established in the ornamental hobby; the species is known only from the original scientific collection and has not entered commercial supply lines as of this writing. Should it become available, its care requirements would be consistent with other miniature Serrapinnus: a small, peaceful schooling fish best maintained in groups of six or more in a well-planted aquarium with soft, slightly acidic water, gentle filtration, and subdued or dappled lighting that complements the natural leaf-litter stream aesthetic.

Tankmates should be chosen from similarly sized, non-aggressive species — other small characids, small rasboras, pygmy corydoras, and dwarf loaches are compatible choices. The pronounced red-and-yellow sexual dichromatism makes it potentially attractive as an aquarium subject, and a mixed-sex group in good condition would provide an ongoing colour display. Water temperature in the low-to-mid 20s Celsius, consistent with cerrado headwater conditions, is appropriate.

Conservation

Serrapinnus malabarbai has not been assessed by the IUCN Red List. The species was described in 2018 from material collected at a single locality in the upper Rio Araguaia drainage, Mato Grosso, Brazil, and its broader distribution within that drainage or adjacent systems is not documented. The upper Araguaia watershed encompasses areas subject to ongoing conversion of cerrado habitat for agriculture, and headwater streams in these landscapes are sensitive to deforestation, stream channelisation, and sedimentation.

No targeted conservation measures are in place for this species, and the absence of an IUCN assessment means its threat status is formally unknown. Given the restricted collecting record and the pressures on cerrado stream ecosystems, additional survey work to establish the species' range and population status would be valuable. It does not appear to be present in the ornamental trade in any volume that would raise concerns about collection pressure.
