A small, lively cheirodontine characid from the upper Paraná and São Francisco drainages of Brazil, Serrapinnus heterodon is best known to ichthyologists for a curious quirk encoded in its name: the number of maxillary teeth varies by geography, a trait rare enough among small tetras that Eigenmann made it the species' defining character. Reaching just over 3 in standard length, it inhabits still and slow-flowing waters among aquatic vegetation and has been assessed as Least Concern by the IUCN.

Taxonomy & naming

Serrapinnus heterodon was described by Carl H. Eigenmann in 1915, originally placed in the genus Holoshestes. The species was subsequently transferred to Serrapinnus, a genus of small cheirodontine characids revised in the late twentieth century. Eschmeyer's Catalog of Fishes records the valid name as Serrapinnus heterodon (Eigenmann, 1915), with the parenthetical authority reflecting the generic reassignment from Holoshestes. The type locality is reported as Jaguara on the Rio Grande, a tributary of the upper Rio Paraná system in Brazil.

Serrapinnus belongs to the subfamily Cheirodontinae within the broad family Characidae, a lineage of small, often schooling characids widespread across South America. The genus is distinguished from close relatives by details of dentition, squamation, and the lateral line. S. heterodon's completely pored lateral line is one of the characters that separates it from certain congeners.

Morphology

Serrapinnus heterodon is a slender, laterally compressed characid reaching a maximum reported size of 3.5 in standard length, though most individuals encountered in the wild are smaller. Body shape is typical of the genus: elongate and fusiform with a relatively pointed snout, moderate eye, and the incomplete adipose fin characteristic of cheirodontines.

The species' most notable morphological feature is the variability of its maxillary dentition: tooth counts of one to four teeth on the premaxilla have been recorded across populations from different drainages, a degree of geographic variation unusual in so small a fish and the basis of the specific epithet. The lateral line is completely pored, which distinguishes S. heterodon from some congeners in which the lateral line is reduced or incomplete. Coloration is generally silvery with the subdued mid-lateral stripe typical of small South American characids; no bright sexual dichromatism is reported.

Habitat

Serrapinnus heterodon occurs in the upper Paraná and São Francisco River basins in tropical South America, two large but distinct drainages separated by the Brazilian highlands. Within these systems the species occupies freshwater, predominantly pelagic and lentic environments — still or slow-flowing waters including reservoirs — where aquatic vegetation provides cover and foraging substrate.

Population studies from a reservoir in the Mogi Guaçu drainage (upper Paraná basin) document S. heterodon using aquatic macrophytes extensively for shelter, feeding, and reproduction. The species tolerates lentic, impounded habitats, suggesting some resilience to the reservoirs that have replaced much of the natural riverine environment in the upper Paraná catchment. Water parameters in these subtropical to tropical Brazilian lowland habitats are typically warm (around 72–82 °F) with near-neutral to slightly acidic to neutral pH.

Feeding

Serrapinnus heterodon is classified as herbivorous to omnivorous, with a high intestinal quotient consistent with a predominantly plant-based or algae-rich diet. In reservoir studies, the species feeds among and on aquatic vegetation, cropping algae and plant material along with small invertebrates encountered during foraging bouts.

The high intestinal quotient — the ratio of gut length to body length — is a standard proxy for herbivory in small characids, and in S. heterodon it indicates that plant and algal matter form a substantial portion of natural intake. Supplementary invertebrate prey such as small crustaceans and aquatic insect larvae are likely taken opportunistically. In captivity the species would be expected to accept good-quality flake foods, micro-pellets, and small live or frozen invertebrates.

Mating

Serrapinnus heterodon is an oviparous species with distinct pairing during spawning, consistent with the egg-scattering mode typical of small cheirodontine characids. Reproduction in the upper Paraná populations is linked to the rainy season, when rising water levels, increased food availability, and changing photoperiod cue reproductive activity.

As is standard for small open-water characids, courtship is presumed to involve male display followed by pair formation and the release of eggs among fine-leaved vegetation or other substrates that provide anchorage for adhesive or semi-adhesive eggs. No parental care is recorded in the family for species of this type.

Breeding

Spawning in Serrapinnus heterodon follows the egg-scattering pattern of its subfamily: pairs release adhesive eggs among aquatic vegetation, and adults provide no care beyond the act of spawning. In the Mogi Guaçu reservoir population, reproductive activity is concentrated in the rainy season (roughly November to March in the upper Paraná basin), following the typical seasonal reproductive cycle of small subtropical South American characids.

No detailed captive-breeding accounts are widely documented for this species. By analogy with other small Serrapinnus and cheirodontines, a breeding setup would call for a well-planted or mop-equipped small aquarium, slightly warmer water (around 79–82 °F) to simulate seasonal conditions, and removal of adults after spawning to protect eggs. Eggs and fry would follow the standard cheirodontine trajectory: hatching within a few days, free-swimming fry requiring very fine first foods such as infusoria or commercial liquid fry food before graduating to freshly hatched brine shrimp nauplii.

In the aquarium

Serrapinnus heterodon is an uncommon species in the ornamental trade, and dedicated hobbyist accounts are sparse. Its size (up to ~3 in SL), peaceful temperament, and schooling nature make it compatible with a community aquarium housing similarly sized, non-aggressive fish. A planted tank with open midwater swimming space would suit its natural preference for vegetated, still to slow-moving water.

Water conditions reflecting its upper Paraná and São Francisco origins — soft to moderately hard water, pH near neutral (6.5–7.5), temperature around 72–81 °F — are appropriate. Like most small characids it does best in a group of six or more individuals, where natural schooling behaviour is expressed. The omnivore-to-herbivore diet bias suggests that some vegetable matter or spirulina-enriched foods should supplement the usual variety of flake, micro-pellets, and small live or frozen invertebrates.

Conservation

Serrapinnus heterodon is assessed as Least Concern (LC) on the IUCN Red List, with the most recent assessment dated 4 March 2021. The species' broad distribution across two major Brazilian river basins — the upper Paraná and the São Francisco — and its ability to persist in modified lentic habitats such as reservoirs underpin the LC rating.

The upper Paraná basin has experienced extensive hydrological modification through dam construction, agriculture, and urbanisation, pressures that affect many of its endemic fish communities. S. heterodon's apparent tolerance of reservoir conditions may buffer it against some of these changes, though the full extent of its population trends is not well documented. No specific conservation measures are in place for the species beyond the general protections applicable to Brazilian freshwater biodiversity.
