Serrapinnus calliurus is a small schooling characid reaching just 1.5 in standard length, distributed across much of temperate South America from the Laguna dos Patos drainage of southern Brazil through the Paraná-Paraguay and Uruguay River basins into Argentina, Bolivia, and Paraguay. Collected in the early nineteenth century from localities in Mato Grosso and Jujuy Province, it was described by George Albert Boulenger in 1900 and remains one of the more widespread small serrapinnins of the Southern Cone.

Taxonomy & naming

Serrapinnus calliurus was described by George Albert Boulenger in 1900, with type localities including Carandasinho (Carandasiñho) in Mato Grosso, Brazil, and San Lorenzo in Jujuy Province, Argentina. Because the original description placed the species in a genus other than Serrapinnus, the authority is written with parentheses: (Boulenger, 1900). The valid name as recorded in Eschmeyer's Catalog of Fishes (California Academy of Sciences) is Serrapinnus calliurus.

The genus Serrapinnus belongs to the family Characidae, the largest family of freshwater fishes in the Americas and one of the most speciose vertebrate families on Earth. Serrapinnus itself is a genus of small, slender serrapinnins that range across lowland South America and includes several species known colloquially as lambaris or piabinhas in Portuguese and mojarras in Spanish. Precise generic limits within this complex of small characids have been revised multiple times, and the placement of individual species has shifted among genera as morphological and molecular data have accumulated.

Morphology

Serrapinnus calliurus is a small, slender, laterally compressed characid with a maximum recorded standard length of 1.5 in. Like other members of the genus, it has the streamlined build typical of open-water schooling serrapinnins: a somewhat pointed snout, a terminal mouth, and a body plan adapted for sustained activity in flowing and still freshwater environments.

The species is benthopelagic in habit, occupying the middle and lower portions of the water column as well as areas near the substrate. Specific details of fin count, scale count, and precise colouration are not extensively reported in accessible literature for this species, but the genus name Serrapinnus and the specific epithet calliurus together suggest a fish with a noticeably patterned or decorated caudal fin. Females are typically plumper across the abdomen when in breeding condition, which represents the most consistent basis for sexing small serrapinnins in the field and in captivity.

Habitat

Serrapinnus calliurus has a broad distribution across temperate and subtropical South America, recorded from the Laguna dos Patos drainage of southern Brazil, the Paraná-Paraguay basin, and the Uruguay River basin, with records extending into Argentina, Bolivia, and Paraguay. This range encompasses a wide variety of lowland freshwater environments — shallow rivers, floodplain lakes, seasonal wetlands, and permanent streams — across the Gran Chaco, Pantanal, and Pampas ecoregions.

Field records from the Salobra River in the southern Pantanal wetlands of Mato Grosso do Sul place the species in water temperatures ranging from approximately 72–93 °F and pH 7.0 to 8.4, reflecting the broad thermal and chemical variation of Pantanal environments across seasons. The species tolerates both the warm, slightly alkaline floodwaters of the wet season and the cooler, more concentrated conditions of the dry season — a flexibility consistent with its wide geographic range across temperate and subtropical latitudes.

Feeding

Serrapinnus calliurus is an omnivore. Gut-content data cited for the species indicate a diet dominated by aquatic insects, particularly Ephemeroptera (mayfly larvae), supplemented by algae and detritus. This combination of animal protein and plant-based material is characteristic of many small stream and floodplain characids, which exploit whatever invertebrates and organic matter are seasonally available.

In an aquarium, the species can be expected to accept a wide range of small foods: finely crushed flake, micro-pellets, and frozen or live foods such as Daphnia, Cyclops, and baby brine shrimp. A diet varied enough to include some live or frozen invertebrate prey supports condition and colouration. As a small, active fish it benefits from frequent small feedings rather than a single large daily ration.

Mating

Serrapinnus calliurus is an oviparous species that reproduces sexually and spawns with distinct pairing, following the general pattern of open-water egg-scattering typical of small characids in this group. Males likely court females in open water or among vegetation, and spawning involves the release of adhesive eggs among fine-leaved aquatic plants or other substrates.

No parental care is known; adults do not guard eggs or fry, and in a breeding aquarium the eggs and newly hatched larvae are at risk of predation by other adults. Spawning activity in related Serrapinnus species typically peaks during the warmer, wetter months in the Southern Hemisphere, timed to floodplain inundation and the associated bloom of invertebrate food resources on which young fish depend.

Breeding

As an egg-scattering characid, Serrapinnus calliurus can be bred in a well-planted aquarium using broadly standard methods for small tetras and lambaris. A group of well-conditioned adults, a tank furnished with fine-leaved plants or spawning mops, and a slight rise in temperature are typically sufficient to stimulate spawning. Eggs are adhesive and are scattered among vegetation, where they hatch within a few days depending on temperature.

The adults show no parental care and will consume eggs given access, so breeders typically remove the spawning medium to a separate container immediately after spawning or use a fine mesh barrier to protect the eggs. The tiny fry require very small first foods — infusoria, rotifers, or commercial liquid fry food — before they are large enough to take newly hatched brine shrimp. Growth is relatively rapid at warmer temperatures, and young fish reach recognisable adult form within a few months.

In the aquarium

Serrapinnus calliurus is a small, peaceful schooling fish suited to a community aquarium with similarly sized tankmates. As with most small serrapinnins, it displays most naturally and is least stressed when kept in a group of six or more individuals; single fish or pairs tend to be shy and inactive. A tank of 15 US gal or more, modestly planted, with gentle filtration and some open swimming space serves the species well.

Water chemistry should reflect its natural range across subtropical South America: neutral to slightly alkaline pH (7.0–8.4), moderate hardness, and temperatures in the range of approximately 72–82 °F. It tolerates a fairly broad range of conditions and is not demanding in captivity. Suitable tankmates include other small South American characids, peaceful corydoras catfishes, and small livebearers. The species is rarely offered in the general aquarium trade but may be kept by hobbyists specialising in native South American fishes or biotope aquaria representing the Pantanal or Paraná basin.

Conservation

Serrapinnus calliurus has not been assessed by the IUCN Red List as of the most recent review. Its broad distribution across the Laguna dos Patos, Paraná-Paraguay, and Uruguay river systems — spanning Argentina, Bolivia, Brazil, Paraguay, and Uruguay — suggests it is not immediately threatened at the range-wide level, though local populations in heavily modified agricultural and urban catchments may face pressures from habitat degradation, water extraction, and pollution.

The Pantanal, one of the species' core habitats, faces ongoing conversion pressures from agriculture and cattle ranching in the surrounding uplands, with consequences for the seasonal flooding regime that many small lowland characids depend on for reproduction and feeding. No targeted conservation measures are known for this species specifically, and it does not appear in the aquarium trade in numbers sufficient to create collection pressure on wild populations.
