Tetragonopterus denticulatus is a deep-bodied, compressed characid from the middle Rio Araguaia drainage of central Brazil, described in 2013 as part of a morphological and molecular revision of the genus Tetragonopterus. Reaching about 2.5 in standard length, it bears the genus's hallmark short, diamond-like body, terminal mouth, and paired humeral spots, distinguished from its congeners by fine details of tooth form. Rare in the aquarium hobby, it is mainly of interest to specialists and collectors drawn to the Araguaia–Tocantins ichthyofauna.

Taxonomy & naming

Tetragonopterus denticulatus was described by Silva, Melo, Oliveira & Benine in 2013, in a paper titled 'Morphological and molecular evidence for two new species of Tetragonopterus (Characiformes: Characidae) from central Brazil', published in the Journal of Fish Biology in May 2013. The species is catalogued in Eschmeyer's Catalog of Fishes under the authority Silva, Melo, Oliveira & Benine, 2013; as the genus name was not changed at description, no parenthetical is used.

The genus Tetragonopterus Cuvier, 1816 is one of the older characid genera and has historically served as a wastebasket for deep-bodied, compressed South American tetras. Modern revisions have progressively narrowed it to a core of morphologically coherent species sharing a distinctively deep, laterally compressed body, a terminal or slightly subterminal mouth, and characteristic humeral marks. T. denticulatus and its sister species described in the same paper are products of this revisionary work, their identity revealed by a combination of morphometrics and mitochondrial sequence data. The family Characidae remains the largest family of freshwater fishes in the Neotropics, and the Araguaia–Tocantins basin where this species lives is a centre of endemism within it.

Morphology

Tetragonopterus denticulatus is a small, deep-bodied characid reaching a maximum recorded standard length of 2.5 in. The body is strongly laterally compressed and roughly rhomboidal in profile, with the dorsal and ventral outlines curving steeply from a narrow caudal peduncle to a deep mid-body — a body plan shared by all members of the genus. The mouth is terminal. Meristically, the species has 9 dorsal soft rays and 28–40 anal soft rays; vertebral count is 27.

Coloration in life includes two humeral marks — a feature characteristic of the genus — and a rounded, dark spot on the caudal peduncle. The large eye, noted by aquarium importers, is consistent with a crepuscular or low-light lifestyle. The specific epithet denticulatus (Latin: finely toothed) refers to tooth characters that distinguish this species from its congeners, though the visible external appearance closely parallels other Tetragonopterus species. Females may be deeper-bodied when gravid, as is typical for the genus, but no detailed published dimorphism data are available.

Habitat

The type locality of Tetragonopterus denticulatus is the middle Rio Araguaia, a major tributary of the Rio Tocantins in central Brazil. The species is recorded as a tropical freshwater fish with a benthopelagic habit, associated with the warm, seasonally dynamic riverine environments of the Araguaia–Tocantins drainage.

The Rio Araguaia is a large lowland river characterised by extensive sandy beaches, flooded forest margins, and aquatic macrophyte beds during the high-water season, contracting to clearer, faster channels and oxbow lakes in the dry season. Like many Araguaia characids, T. denticulatus likely exploits different microhabitats across the annual flood pulse. The large eye noted for the species suggests it is active under lower-light conditions, such as dawn, dusk, or the dimly lit interiors of flooded vegetation.

Feeding

Tetragonopterus denticulatus is recorded as carnivorous on FishBase, in line with the feeding habits of other Tetragonopterus species, which typically prey on smaller fishes, aquatic invertebrates, and insects. The deep body and relatively large terminal mouth of the genus are consistent with an active predator capable of consuming prey of substantial girth relative to its own size.

In the aquarium, analogous Tetragonopterus species do well on a diet of good-quality frozen and live foods — chironomid larvae, brine shrimp, small earthworms, and similar items — supplemented with meaty prepared foods. A diet weighted toward animal protein matches the carnivorous tendency; purely vegetarian or flake-based diets are generally insufficient for sustained condition.

Mating

No published observations of courtship behaviour specific to Tetragonopterus denticulatus are available. Based on the biology of the genus and the family Characidae more broadly, it is an egg-scattering, open-water spawner with no parental care. Males of deep-bodied characids commonly pursue females actively during spawning, with brief parallel swimming and simultaneous release of eggs and milt.

Spawning likely occurs among fine-leaved aquatic plants or over sandy substrates in the shallow, vegetated margins of its river habitat, following the pattern seen across the genus. The large eye and inferred crepuscular activity suggest that peak reproductive activity may occur at low light levels, as has been reported for other characids with similar ocular proportions.

Breeding

Tetragonopterus denticulatus has not been bred in captivity under documented conditions, and no detailed breeding account is available. The general Tetragonopterus breeding model — shared with the broader egg-scattering characid guild — involves the female scattering adhesive or semi-adhesive eggs among fine-leaved plants or over the substrate, with the male fertilising them immediately. The adults provide no subsequent care and will consume eggs and fry if given the opportunity.

Aquarists wishing to attempt breeding T. denticulatus would follow standard protocols for medium-bodied, carnivorous characids: a separate breeding tank with dim lighting, fine-leaved plants or a spawning mop, slightly acidic to neutral water, and live or frozen conditioning foods to bring the pair into peak reproductive condition. Fry would require very small first foods such as infusoria or commercial micro-fry preparations before graduating to nauplii.

In the aquarium

Tetragonopterus denticulatus is rarely available in the hobby and is primarily of interest to specialist collectors focused on Brazilian characids or the Araguaia–Tocantins fauna. Aquarium Glaser notes that it is very peaceful, lively, and skittish, and that it dislikes bright light — a reflection of the large-eyed, crepuscular tendency also noted in the species description. It is described as extremely easy to care for despite its rarity.

As a schooling species, it should be kept in a group of at least six individuals, which reduces skittishness and brings out natural shoaling behaviour. A tank with subdued or dappled lighting, ample open swimming space, and some darker refuge areas — dense planting, driftwood, or floating plants to diffuse surface light — suits the species well. Given its carnivorous diet, tankmates should be of similar size or larger; very small tetras or fry may be at risk. Standard tropical water parameters are adequate: a temperature in the mid-to-upper 20s Celsius and a near-neutral pH are reasonable starting points for a species from the warm lowland rivers of central Brazil.

Conservation

Tetragonopterus denticulatus is assessed as Least Concern (LC) on the IUCN Red List, with the most recent assessment noted from 2018. The species occupies the middle Rio Araguaia within the broader Araguaia–Tocantins drainage of central Brazil — a large river system that, while subject to deforestation, cattle ranching, and hydroelectric development pressures, still supports extensive fish populations across much of its length.

The LC assessment reflects a species with no evidence of rapid population decline and a distribution across a sizeable river system rather than a restricted endemic range. However, the Araguaia–Tocantins basin has been significantly affected by land clearance in the Brazilian Cerrado, and the long-term health of its fish communities depends on the conservation of riparian forests and the moderation of dam construction and agriculture run-off. T. denticulatus, as a recently described species, remains poorly studied, and improved survey data would sharpen any future assessment of its status.
