Tetragonopterus franciscoensis is a small characin of the Rio São Francisco basin in eastern Brazil, described in 2016 as part of a sweeping revision of the diverse genus Tetragonopterus. Reaching just under 4.5 in standard length, it can be distinguished from its congeners by a combination of olfactory-lamellae count, maxillary-tooth number, and a characteristic pair of humeral blotches plus a mark on the caudal peduncle. Well known and reportedly abundant throughout the São Francisco — where it carries the vernacular name 'piaba-rapadura' in Minas Gerais — it ranges more broadly across the São Francisco, Paraguaçu, and Itapicuru drainages and was assessed as Least Concern by the IUCN in 2020.

Taxonomy & naming

Tetragonopterus franciscoensis was formally described by Silva, Melo, Oliveira, and Benine in 2016 in Zootaxa 4200(1):1–46, a monograph that reorganised the genus Tetragonopterus and brought several new species to light. The holotype (MZUSP 120566, 3 in SL) was collected at Três Marias in the state of Minas Gerais, Brazil, at approximately 18°30′S 45°17′W in the Rio São Francisco. Eschmeyer's Catalog of Fishes is the governing authority for the valid name as spelled above.

Tetragonopterus is one of the 'old guard' genera of the family Characidae, erected long before the phylogenetic complexity of neotropical characins was fully appreciated. The genus name means 'four-cornered fin', a reference to the angular shape of the dorsal fin. The specific epithet franciscoensis signals the species' primary basin of occurrence: the Rio São Francisco, one of the great rivers of Brazil and a major centre of characin endemism.

The 2016 revision placed T. franciscoensis within a cluster of Tetragonopterus species distinguished from one another by olfactory-lamellae counts (11–17 lamellae in this species), the number of maxillary teeth (1–4), and colour-pattern details including the number and placement of humeral pigment marks. Molecular and morphological data together support its recognition as a species distinct from the geographically overlapping T. argenteus.

Morphology

Tetragonopterus franciscoensis is a moderately deep-bodied, laterally compressed characin with the broadly oval body outline typical of the genus. FishBase records a maximum standard length of 4.5 in SL, making it one of the larger members of a genus whose species span a range of sizes; the holotype itself measured 3 in SL, indicating that the holotype represents a sub-adult.

The diagnostic characters separating T. franciscoensis from its congeners centre on the olfactory organ and dentition: the species carries 11–17 olfactory lamellae and 1–4 maxillary teeth — both characters that overlap relatively little with those of closely related species when taken in combination. Coloration follows the general Tetragonopterus plan of a silvery body with darker markings: two distinct humeral blotches are present (a character shared with some but not all congeners) together with a dark mark on the caudal peduncle at the base of the tail. As with many characins, preserved and live colouration differ, and the precise expression of markings varies with specimen condition and collection.

Habitat

The primary range of Tetragonopterus franciscoensis spans the Rio São Francisco basin, with records also from the Rio Paraguaçu and Rio Itapicuru drainages in the states of Minas Gerais, Bahia, and Sergipe. The type locality at Três Marias in Minas Gerais sits within the middle São Francisco, a large, historically clear-water to slightly turbid tropical river on the Brazilian plateau.

The Rio São Francisco basin is noted for its high rate of fish endemism — more than 113 of its roughly 200+ native species are endemic to the basin — and Tetragonopterus species in the region are generally associated with flowing river sections with structural cover such as submerged debris, flooded margins, and macrophyte beds. Water conditions in the São Francisco mainstream are typically neutral to slightly alkaline and moderately warm, consistent with a tropical dryland-to-cerrado catchment. The range extension into the Paraguaçu and Itapicuru basins of coastal Bahia suggests the species tolerates a range of river types within the broader Atlantic slope of eastern Brazil.

Feeding

Detailed dietary data for Tetragonopterus franciscoensis are not available in the literature reviewed, but the feeding ecology of the genus provides a reliable baseline. Tetragonopterus are generalist carnivore-omnivores that take invertebrates, small fishes, plant material, and detritus in roughly the proportions available in their environment, making them flexible opportunists in the mid-water and near-bottom zones of their river habitats.

In the aquarium, congeneric species accept a broad range of standard foods — quality flake and small pellets, frozen bloodworm, brine shrimp, Daphnia, and occasional live foods — without difficulty. Provided protein-rich foods make up a reasonable component of the diet, colour and condition are well maintained. The relatively large adult size of T. franciscoensis (approaching 4.5 in SL) means that food particle size appropriate for adult fish will be larger than for the smaller tetras more commonly kept.

Mating

No published observations of mating behaviour specific to Tetragonopterus franciscoensis exist in the accessible literature. By analogy with other members of the genus and with Characidae more broadly, the species is expected to be an egg-scattering open-water or plant-spawner, with sexual display involving male pursuit of females and courtship movement among fine-leaved vegetation or over substratum.

Sexual dimorphism, if present, likely follows the pattern common in medium-sized characins: females fuller-bodied when gravid and possibly slightly smaller, males with minor fin development differences, but without dramatic colour dichromatism. Spawning seasonality in the Rio São Francisco region may be tied to the austral-summer wet season when flow and temperature rise and invertebrate prey peaks, as is typical for neotropical river fish.

Breeding

Tetragonopterus franciscoensis has not been documented in captive breeding in the hobby literature reviewed. Like the great majority of medium-sized Characidae, it would be expected to spawn as an egg-scatterer, depositing small, non-adhesive to weakly adhesive eggs among fine-leaved plants or over gravel, with no parental care; adults would likely consume eggs if not separated after spawning.

For aquarists wishing to attempt breeding, the general approach for Tetragonopterus — conditioning adults on varied live and frozen foods, providing fine-leaved plants or synthetic spawning mops, and separating eggs or adults promptly after spawning — represents the reasonable starting protocol. Water parameters matching the species' São Francisco origin (neutral to slightly alkaline, warm, moderate hardness) are a sensible baseline. Given that the species has not been established in the hobby, captive-bred stock is not known to be available.

In the aquarium

Tetragonopterus franciscoensis is not an established aquarium fish, and no dedicated husbandry literature exists for it. Its modest maximum size of about 4.5 in SL places it in the medium-sized characin bracket — larger than the familiar neon or cardinal tetras but well within the range manageable in a standard home aquarium of 59 in or more for a small group.

Based on genus-level expectations, the species would likely do well in groups of five or more in a spacious, well-filtered tank with open swimming space and some planted cover. Water chemistry in the neutral-to-mildly-alkaline range, temperatures of approximately 75–82 °F, and high water quality would suit its origins in the São Francisco system. Tankmates of similar size and peaceful disposition would be appropriate. The species' absence from the hobby means that acquisition would require specialist importation of wild-caught stock, which is not routinely undertaken for this species.

Conservation

Tetragonopterus franciscoensis was assessed as Least Concern (LC) by the IUCN Red List in October 2020 (assessment ID 134690502). The assessment reflects its reported abundance and relatively wide distribution across multiple Brazilian river basins — the São Francisco, Paraguaçu, and Itapicuru — rather than restriction to a single, vulnerable water body.

Despite the LC designation, the Rio São Francisco itself faces ongoing pressure from water extraction for irrigation and human consumption, flow regulation by large dams (including Três Marias, precisely the type locality of this species), and agricultural run-off. The São Francisco's high endemism means that species confined to it have no alternative refuges if basin-wide conditions deteriorate. Monitoring of population trends for T. franciscoensis is sparse, but its current wide distribution and reported abundance are reasons for cautious optimism under present conditions.
