Taxonomy & naming
Tetragonopterus argenteus was described by the French zoologist Georges Cuvier in 1816, making it one of the earliest formally described South American characids. Eschmeyer's Catalog of Fishes — the governing authority for valid names — lists the valid combination as Tetragonopterus argenteus Cuvier, 1816. Because Cuvier described it directly in Tetragonopterus, the authority is cited without parentheses.
The genus Tetragonopterus is placed within the family Characidae. Historically the name 'Tetragonopterus' was applied loosely to a large, heterogeneous assemblage of South American tetras, but modern revisions have substantially narrowed the genus to a smaller, morphologically coherent group. T. argenteus itself has been reported from a wide range of South American lowland drainages, and its synonymy and exact type locality have been subjects of ongoing ichthyological attention; researchers working in the Amazon basin continue to refine the species boundaries within this group.
Morphology
The species is a moderately small characid, reaching a reported maximum standard length of approximately 2–2.5 in, though most specimens in trade and in the wild are smaller. The body is strongly compressed laterally and nearly rhomboidal in outline when viewed from the side — a form reflected in the genus name. The dorsal profile is strongly arched; the ventral keel is also prominent, giving the fish its characteristic deep-bodied appearance.
The flanks are covered in large, reflective scales that give the fish its common name: in good light, the entire side of the body flashes bright silver, often with a faint bluish or greenish iridescence along the upper flank. A faint or indistinct dark caudal spot or stripe may be present near the tail root, but the predominant impression is of clean, unmarked silver. The fins are generally hyaline to pale. Sexual differences are subtle; ripe females become noticeably deeper-bodied and more rotund in the ventral region than males.
Habitat
Tetragonopterus argenteus is distributed across the lowland river basins of South America, with records from the Amazon basin and the Orinoco drainage. It inhabits tropical freshwaters across a broad geographical range, occupying the slow-moving to moderately flowing reaches of rivers, flooded margins, and associated lakes and lagoons within those systems.
Reported temperature tolerances cover the tropical range of approximately 72–82 °F. Like many schooling characids of the lowland Amazon and Orinoco, the species is associated with soft, warm, often tea-coloured (blackwater or whitewater) environments, though it appears tolerant of a range of water conditions. It schools in open water and among flooded vegetation and woody debris, where the reflective silver flanks may serve a disruptive or social function within the school.
Feeding
T. argenteus is an opportunistic omnivore in the wild, feeding on small invertebrates, insect larvae, and organic material available in the water column and at the surface. Like most characids of its size, it is a generalised midwater feeder that takes whatever small, edible items come within reach of its school.
In the aquarium it accepts a wide range of prepared and live foods without difficulty. Good-quality flake and small granular foods form a practical staple; these should be supplemented with occasional offerings of frozen or live Daphnia, brine shrimp, bloodworm, or similar small invertebrates to maintain good condition and encourage natural foraging behaviour. It is an active, competitive feeder at the surface and mid-water, and does best when food is offered in amounts the group consumes within a minute or two, twice daily.
Mating
Tetragonopterus argenteus is a broadcast egg-scatterer, following the typical reproductive strategy of the majority of small South American characids. Males display no elaborate courtship structures, and the species does not form pair bonds. Breeding activity is stimulated by rising water temperatures and, in captivity, by gradual conditioning with live and frozen foods.
Males will chase ripe females actively through the water column, nudging the female's flank and driving her toward areas of fine-leaved vegetation or substrate cover where spawning occurs. The pair — or a single male and female breaking briefly from the school — release eggs and milt simultaneously in a brief burst of activity. No courtship territory is established or defended, and multiple males may attempt to spawn with a single receptive female.
Breeding
Spawning produces small, semi-adhesive to non-adhesive eggs that sink to the substrate or catch briefly on fine-leaved plants before settling among debris. The eggs hatch within approximately 24 to 48 hours at tropical temperatures, depending on water temperature, and the free-swimming fry become active a day or two after hatching.
Adults show no parental care and will readily consume their own eggs and fry, so breeders typically transfer conditioned adults to a separate, dimly lit spawning tank with a layer of marbles or a fine-mesh grid to protect the eggs, then return the adults to the main tank after spawning is observed. First foods for the fry are infusoria or very fine commercial fry preparations, transitioning to newly hatched brine shrimp as the fry grow. Growth is steady at typical aquarium temperatures.
In the aquarium
T. argenteus is an adaptable, undemanding schooling fish well suited to a community aquarium with similarly sized, peaceful tankmates. A group of at least six is recommended to produce natural shoaling behaviour; larger numbers produce a more cohesive school and reduce the low-level chasing that can occur in smaller groups. It is an active midwater swimmer and benefits from a tank with a reasonable swimming length — 31.5 in or more for a small group.
Water conditions should be warm (72–82 °F) and may lean slightly soft and acidic to neutral, reflecting the Amazonian and Orinoco origins of the species, though it tolerates a reasonable range of tap-water conditions. Subdued lighting, a dark substrate, and background planting will show the species at its most reflective. It is compatible with most peaceful community fish of comparable or larger size, including other tetras, rasboras, corydoras, and dwarf cichlids. Its small mouth limits any predatory threat to fish of very similar or smaller body size.
Conservation
Tetragonopterus argenteus has not been formally assessed by the IUCN Red List; it is currently listed as Not Evaluated (NE). The species' wide distribution across the Amazon and Orinoco basins — two of the most extensive river systems on Earth — and its status as a common trade species suggest that it is not presently at risk, but in the absence of a formal assessment, its population trends and any localised threats remain undocumented.
Deforestation, siltation, and the general degradation of Amazonian and Orinoco lowland habitats are ongoing concerns for the broad community of characid fishes that share this species' range. Most T. argenteus in the ornamental trade is wild-caught, as is typical for inexpensive small tetras from South America. Sourcing from responsible suppliers who operate under sustainable collection frameworks remains the best practice for aquarists.
