Tetragonopterus chalceus was described by Johann Baptist von Spix and Louis Agassiz in 1829, in their foundational work on Brazilian fishes. The type locality is given broadly as 'Brasiliae aequinoctialis fluviis' — the equinoctial rivers of Brazil — placing the origin squarely in the Amazon basin. Eschmeyer's Catalog of Fishes records the valid name as Tetragonopterus chalceus Spix & Agassiz, 1829; the authority is given in this parenthetical form because of subsequent nomenclatural history within the genus.

The genus Tetragonopterus is placed within the family Characidae, the large and taxonomically complex family that encompasses the great majority of South American tetras. The genus name translates roughly from Greek as 'four-cornered fin' or 'square-winged,' a reference to the body shape or fin proportions of the type species. The specific epithet chalceus derives from the Greek chalkos, meaning copper or brass, describing the coppery-gold body lustre that characterises live specimens. Specimens recorded in taxonomic literature range from 1.5 in to 4.5 in standard length, reflecting a broad natural size range across populations.

Morphology

Tetragonopterus chalceus is a moderately deep-bodied, laterally compressed characin, a body form typical of open-water schooling tetras.
